Mr Ashley Carr

Ashley Carr was born and educated in Melbourne, completing his medical degree at Monash University in 1997. He undertook orthopaedic specialty training in Victoria and obtained his fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons in 2007. Ashley then spent 12 months at the Orthopaedic and Arthritic Institute in Toronto, Canada, focusing on hip and knee surgery. In 2009 he undertook further training in shoulder surgery at the highly regarded Schulthess Clinic in Zurich, Switzerland. Later that year he was awarded the Orthopaedic and Trauma Care Foundation visiting fellowship in trauma surgery to Hong Kong. While overseas Ashley gained valuable experience in the management of hip and knee conditions, from sporting injuries to primary and revision joint replacement; and in all aspects of shoulder surgery including arthroscopic procedures. Ashley joined the Melbourne Orthopaedic Group in 2011. He has worked at the Alfred Hospital as an Orthopaedic Consultant Surgeon involved in the management of major trauma patients. He has also previously worked at Latrobe Regional Hospital and continues to have close links with Gippsland. Ashley has published journal articles in his subspecialty areas and maintains a keen interest in research and student teaching. He was previously an Assistant Editor of the Australian and New Zealand Journal of Surgery. He is currently the supervisor of registrar teaching at the Melbourne Orthopaedic Group and an honorary lecturer at Monash University.

Mr David Young

David was born and raised in Melbourne, completing his undergraduate medical training at Melbourne University in 1973. He completed his orthopaedic surgical training through the Melbourne Orthopaedic Training Programme in 1981. This was followed by 12 months of further surgical training at the Bristol Royal Infirmary, England and he spent 6 months as a travelling fellow in Europe and Sweden. David returned to Melbourne to join the Melbourne Orthopaedic Group in 1984 where he continues to practice Orthopaedic Surgery. He spent 10 years as a visiting orthopaedic surgeon at the Alfred Hospital and is now in full time private practice. David is a member of the Australian Arthroplasty Association and the Australian Knee Society. David's special interests are sports medicine and arthritis surgery. He is the orthopaedic surgeon to Western Bulldogs, Australian Rules Football team and is a consultant orthopaedic surgeon to the Australian and Victorian Institutes of Sports and Netball Australia. He continues to have active research interests in knee ligament injuries, patellar instability problems, the management of stress fractures in athletes. Hip preservation surgery is now a large component of his practice. He is committed to developing and teaching hip arthroscopic surgery techniques. David is married with four children and enjoys the sports of snow-skiing, wind-surfing and golf. His hobbies include woodcarving and antique furniture restoration.

Prof. Aaron Buckland

A/Prof. Aaron Buckland is a Spinal Surgeon with subspecialty expertise in adult and paediatric spinal deformity, complex revision surgery and minimally invasive spine surgery. A/Prof. Buckland completed his MBBS/BMedSci combined degree at University of Melbourne in 2005, and Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (Orthopaedics) in 2014. Subsequently A/Prof. Buckland completed spinal surgery fellowship at NYU Hospital for Joint Disease in 2015, and was employed as a full-time faculty member at NYU Langone Health in New York City from 2015-2020 where he was promoted to Associate Professor and Director of Spine Research. A/Prof. Buckland has a keen interest in academics in addition to his clinical workload, having more than 160 peer reviewed publications, given over 120 podium presentations at national and international academic meetings, and has won several awards at international specialty society meetings for his research, including the Spine Society of Australia, American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, Scoliosis Research Society, International Society for Advancement of Spine Surgery, and the esteemed ‘Otto Aufranc Award for Best Clinical Paper' by the Hip Society. A/Prof Buckland is a member of the internationally renowned Harms Study Group, AO Foundation Knowledge Forum and Paediatric Spine Study Group. A/Prof Buckland is the founder and chairman of Australian not-for-profit ‘Spine and Scoliosis Research Associates Australia' (SSRAA), dedicated to research and education in spinal and scoliosis surgery. As part of his role in SSRAA and Royal Children's Hospital, A/Prof Buckland has developed the Paediatric Spine Registry piloted at the Royal Children's Hospital in 2022. A/Prof Buckland currently works in the public health system at Royal Children's Hospital and in private practice at Melbourne Orthopaedic Group.
