Nick Anderson

Job Titles:
  • Co - Founder of Counterpoint
Nick Anderson is an independent-minded liberal who covers politics and contemporary cultural issues in a way that connects with readers. His loose, idiosyncratic style carries with it an unconventional message with appeal. In 2005, Anderson was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Editorial Cartooning. The judges complimented his "unusual graphic style that produced extraordinarily thoughtful and powerful messages." Anderson takes great care and effort with those messages. Anderson is co-founder of Counterpoint, which is a groundbreaking new approach to the distribution of editorial cartoons. Counterpoint was created in early 2019 as an answer to the trend of newspapers eliminating staff editorial cartoonists. If this great American art form is to continue, other venues must be imagined for the distribution of political cartoons. Syndication is not enough, as it doesn't pay cartoonists enough to live on. Counterpoint pays cartoonists for their original work. It's an email newsletter published twice per week, with the original work of six editorial cartoonists in each issue. Three cartoons are from cartoonists who lean left, and three from cartoonists who lean right. In addition to the Pulitzer, Anderson earned the Society of Professional Journalists' Sigma Delta Chi Award, a two-time winner of Columbia College's Fischetti Award, and the National Press Foundation's Clifford K. & James T. Berryman Award. Anderson's cartoons have been published in Newsweek, The New York Times, The Washington Post, USA Today, the Chicago Tribune and other papers. Anderson grew up in Toledo, Ohio, in a family that encouraged independent thinking in politics. His father, a scientist, didn't like the mathematical odds of his son becoming a cartoonist, but at age 15 Anderson started drawing cartoons for his high school newspaper and immediately knew his calling. "I figured the chances of being an editorial cartoonist were pretty slim, but I didn't want to go to my deathbed without trying."
