An allergy/immunology specialist is a physician trained to prevent, diagnosis, manage, and treat allergic and immunologic diseases. Completion of residency training in either pediatrics or internal medicine is required prior to beginning fellowship medical training in allergy. During training, physicians learn to treat both children and adults with a variety of medical problems. Also during training, expertise is developed in performing skin testing for allergies and designing recipes for "allergy shots." Allergy testing and even allergy shots are sometimes offered by non-allergy trained physicians. The American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology feels that allergy shots should be formulated and administered only by those physicians who have had specific medical training in this area...
