DR BLACK'S EYE ASSOCIATES - Key Persons


Ada Sanchez

Dr. Sanchez graduated from the University of Louisville with a Bachelor's of Science in Biology and earned her Doctorate in Optometry from the Indiana University School of Optometry. She then went on to complete a residency in Low Vision Rehabilitation and Ocular Disease at the Lexington Veterans Affairs Medical Center. Dr. Sanchez practices full scope optometry, ranging from comprehensive exams and contact lens fitting to diagnosis and management of ocular diseases. She is a member of the American Optometric Associated and the Kentucky Optometric Association and is also fluent in Spanish. When she's not in the office, Dr. Sanchez enjoys spending time with her husband and their dog, Oliver.

Chris Stroud

Dr. Stroud graduated with a double major in Chemistry and Biology from Indiana University Southeast in the spring of 2000. After graduation, Dr. Stroud earned his Doctor of Optometry degree from Indiana University School of Optometry in Bloomington, IN, in the Fall of 2004. He has been practicing in the Louisville area since that time. Dr. Stroud was born in New Albany, IN and lived in Georgetown, IN until going to Bloomington for school. He is delighted to be back in the Louisville area because of strong local roots with friends and family. His hobbies include golf, traveling, and playing with his kids.

Dr. Carolyn Hall

Dr. Carolyn Hall received her undergraduate degree from Bellarmine College before graduating from Southern College of Optometry. She was named to the Dean's list for academic achievement for four years and received the Outstanding Clinician Award three times. Dr. Hall is a member of the American Academy of Optometry. She joined Dr. Black's practice in 1993.

Dr. Curtis Jordan

Dr. Curtis Jordan received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Indiana University and his medical degree from Indiana University School of Medicine. After completing an internship at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis, he also completed a residency in Family Practice and was Chief Resident. Dr. Jordan completed residency training in Ophthalmology at Kresge Eye Institute in Detroit, MI, before joining Dr. Black's Eye Associates in 1995. Dr. Jordan says he values his time as a family doctor, but being able to practice ophthalmology at Eye Associates for the last twenty years has truly been a gift. His daughter is completing her undergraduate degree at Asbury University and plays on the soccer team. They sneak away for "Father-Daughter" vacations on a regular basis. Dr. Jordan also loves "all things IU" and enjoys heading up to Bloomington whenever he can. He took up guitar as an undergrad at IU and has played around at that ever since.

Dr. Dana Conway

Dr. Dana Conway received a B.S. in Chemistry from Indiana State University before graduating from Indiana University School of Optometry in Bloomington, Indiana. Dr. Conway joined the Eye Associates team in 2014 and loves to practice primary care optometry. This includes prescribing glasses and contacts, treating ocular disease, and managing cataract patients before and after surgery. Dr. Conway also helps patients decide if they are a candidate for refractive surgery such as LASIK. Dr. Conway is a member of the Indiana optometric Association and the American optometric Association. When she is not seeing patients, she is busy spending time with her husband and four children.

Dr. Jennifer Kellems

Dr. Jennifer Kellems received her Bachelor's in Biophysics from the University of Southern Indiana. Soon after, she graduated with her doctorate from Indiana University School of Optometry and has been practicing in Corydon since 2005 and in Tell City since 2012. In 2010, she received the Wal-Mart Doctor of the Year award for her region. Dr. Kellems has been married to her husband Tom for thirteen years, and together they have two children, Hunter and Hope. When not caring for patients, she loves to spend her time with her family and friends. As a fan of the outdoors, Dr. Kellems is involved with the National Wild Turkey Federation and Ducks Unlimited. She is also a member of the Leopold Memorial Park Association and taught religion education for two consecutive years. What the staff wants you to know about Dr. Jennifer Kellems: Tracy says "Dr. Kellems and I have worked together for several years. I love that she is a very caring a compassionate doctor and puts her patient at ease. She spends her time with her patients and is not a rush in rush out kind of doctor. Patients love that they get the attention. She is silly and professional all at the same time. What else can I say she is Awesome!"

Dr. Jessica Pugh

As an undergraduate at Butler University, Dr. Jessica Pugh majored in Chemistry and Spanish. She then graduated from Indiana University of Optometry in Bloomington, where she received the Dr. Henry W. Hofstetter Award for outstanding achievement, leadership to her class, and service to her patients. Dr. Pugh was also honored with the prestigious Bennett Humanitarian Award for distinguished contributions in service to humanity. She is a member of the American Optometric Association. What the staff wants you to know about Dr. Pugh: "Dr. Jessica is our most peppy doctor. We don't even know how that is possible with four small children at home! She comes in to the office with pep in her step, excited and ready to go. She wants patients to tell her everything about their vision, the good and the bad. Her goal is to make every patient 100% happy with their surgery, and if a patient tells her that their vision is okay, she digs in, because she wants their vision to be amazing! D. Dr. Maleah Stroud

Dr. Maleah Stroud received her Optometry degree from the University of Indiana in Bloomington in 2005. She completed her undergraduate degree at Cornell College in Iowa, majoring in Biology. Dr. Stroud is originally from Colorado, but has lived in the Southern Indiana area since 2005. She is actively involved with her two daughters as a Girl Scout troop leader. She is an avid reader and enjoys cooking & baking.

Dr. Mindy Gunn

Dr. Mindy Gunn is a Washington County native and remains active there. She graduated from Indiana School of Optometry and is now a member of the American Optometric Association, Indiana Optometric Association, Washington County Chamber of Commerce, and Rotary Club of Salem. Dr. Gunn is a two-time Paul Harris Fellow with Rotary International. She enjoys playing tennis and is an avid sports fan and craft beer enthusiast. Awards: Best Optometrist in Washington County 2012 Emerging Philanthropist of the Year Award Best Optometrist in Washington County 2014 What the staff wants you to know about Dr. Gunn: S.S., Retinal Specialist, says: "We think you can understand Dr. Gunn best by knowing this one fact-she had to work less at the Humane Society because she kept adopting all the dogs. She cares so much for others it exudes from her. Her compassion is endless. She never has a negative thing to say about anyone or anything. If you know Dr. Gunn, you love her! Dr. Gunn's interests include tennis, IU basketball, gardening, upcycling, nutrition, and local agriculture. She is a great clinician-very detail oriented." Dr. Natalie Katt

Originally from Salem, Indiana, Dr. Natalie Katt received her undergraduate degree in Biology from the University of Kentucky in Lexington, Kentucky, and her Doctor of Optometry Degree from Indiana University School of Optometry in Bloomington, Indiana. While in Optometry School, Dr. Katt was an active volunteer, donating her time to Special Olympics of Indiana, school screenings, and Volunteer Optometric Services to Humanity (VOSH) service projects where she was given the opportunity to go on an optometric service trip to Jamaica. During Optometry School breaks, Dr. Katt worked as an optometric technician and scribe at many of our locations and knew from early on that she wanted to be a part of the Dr. Black's Eye Associates Family. Dr. Katt is a member of the American Optometric Association and the Indiana Optometric Association. When not caring for her patients she enjoys spending time with her husband, Andrew, traveling, and running.

Dr. Rob Steller

Dr. Rob Steller double majored in Biology and Chemistry at Anderson University in Anderson, IN, before graduating from Indiana University School of Optometry in Bloomington, IN, where he was a member of Beta Sigma Kappa International Optometric Honor Society. He is a member of the American Optometric Association, the AOA's Cornea & Contact Lens and Sports Vision sections, and the Kentucky Optometric Association. Dr. Steller is proud to be a part of the Kentucky Vision Project. He enjoys playing golf, rooting on his favorite sports teams (Cubs and Hoosiers), spending time with his wife and son (Christi and Carter), and coaching his son's baseball team. What the staff wants you to know about Dr. Steller: "Dr. Steller jumps right in and helps patients out whenever he can. Everyone has enjoyed listening to his recaps of Chicago Cubs games-okay, that is not true. However, Dr. Steller is passionate about four things: his son, his wife, baseball, and his patients' vision.

Jacob Yunker

Dr. Yunker was born and raised in Maysville, KY. He received his undergraduate education at Transylvania University before graduating from the University of Louisville School of Medicine. Dr. Yunker completed residency training at Callahan Eye Foundation Hospital and fellowship training at Retina Consultants of Alabama, both at the University of Alabama in Birmingham. During his residency training, Dr. Yunker's passion for teaching earned him the Brass Apple teaching award. As an Assistant Professor of Vitreo-Retinal Surgery at the University of Kentucky Department of Ophthalmology, he was actively involved in teaching residents and training fellows in retinal surgery. Dr. Yunker has published papers on diabetic retinopathy and vitreo-retinal surgery and has also served as a co-instructor for courses on diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration, and vitreo-retinal surgical techniques at the annual meeting of the American Academy of Ophthalmology. Dr. Yunker is a college basketball fan who also likes to run, watch movies, and most of all spend time with his wife, their young daughter and son, and their dogs.

John Eagleson

Dr. Eagleson earned a B.S. in Optometry and was awarded a Doctor of Optometry degree from Indiana University. He served a Navy commission from 1974 to 1976 before becoming a Fellow of the American Academy of Optometry. Since, he has accumulated more than 40 years of experience in optometry. Since 1977, Dr. Eagleson has been a member of the Rotary Club, of which he was also a former president. He currently serves North United Methodist as church treasurer and enjoys spending time with his two daughters and three grandchildren.

Karoline Munson

Dr. Munson earned both her Bachelor's of Science degree in 1998 and doctorate of Optometry degree in 2001 from Indiana University. She then joined the Frankfort Vision Center in Frankfort, Kentucky, where she became the sole owner 2 years later. Dr. Munson has enjoyed many years becoming part of the Frankfort community while serving her patient's visual and eye health needs. She has also been active in her profession, serving as the Kentucky Optometric Association President 2015-2016 and on several committees for the American Optometric Association. In 2018, Dr. Munson became a part of the Dr. Black's Eye Associates family as an optometrist in our Frankfort locations. When Dr. Munson isn't taking care of her patients she loves to spend time with her husband and two children, volunteering at Second Street School, serving her beloved profession and sewing.

Kelly Borgman

Dr. Borgman's extensive experience in her specialty of Pediatric and Adolescent optometry enables her to provide compassionate and knowledgeable care for all of her patients. A graduate of the New England College of Optometry in Boston, MA, Kelly Borgman, O.D. has worked her entire career specializing in Pediatric and Adolescent optometry. After relocating to the Louisville area in 2009 with her husband, Dr. Borgman continued to build upon her specialty at Eye Care For Kids and has extensive experience in diagnosing and treating pediatric patients with strabismus, amblyopia and ocular disease. Dr. Borgman also provides comprehensive eye exams for children of all ages, including kindergarten eye examinations. During her time away from the office Dr. Borgman enjoys spending time with her husband and children.

Kristopher Pugh

After receiving a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry from Butler University, Dr. Pugh earned his medical degree from Indiana University School of Medicine. He completed an internship at Clarian Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis, before receiving his residency training at the University of South Carolina, where he was elected Chief Resident. Dr. Pugh and his wife returned home to Indiana in 2007 to join Dr. Black's Eye Associates. He strives to tailor surgical outcomes to meet each patient's lifestyle needs. When Dr. Pugh isn't busy helping his patients see life clearly, he loves spending time with his wife and four children, traveling when ever possible and endlessly cheering on the Chicago Cubs. What the staff wants you to know about Dr. Kris Pugh: We were all excited when Dr. Pugh and his wife, Dr. Jessica Pugh, joined Dr. Black's Eye Associates. The practice added two amazing doctors who both care greatly about their patients. We have felt blessed to watch their family grow. When they joined the practice, the Drs. Pugh had two young daughters, and since then have added two sons. Everyone enjoys this dynamic family of six! W.B., Dr. Pugh's technician, says: "I am pretty sure that I knew the baby's name before he was born, because Dr. Pugh let it slip once. He says that he didn't! I will never forget how happy he was the day he found out he was having a boy. I am sure that three girls in the house were enough." J.M., technician trainer, says: "Dr. Pugh listens to intently that it's like he memorizes what his patients say. He can recall details about patients years after removing their cataracts. It's amazing, especially since he often cannot remember where he left his pen!" C.H., on-call nurse, says: "I love it when Dr. Pugh is on call. I cannot tell you how many times he has come in to the office to see patients that could have waited, just because he knew they were uneasy. He told me once that leaving a patient worried for a day or two seems like torture. He cares so much."

Steven Howell

Dr. Howell is from Bowling Green, KY, where he attended Bowling Green High School. He is a Magna Cum Laude and Phi Beta Kappa graduate of the University of the South in Sewanee, TN, where he majored in Biology. He graduated Summa Cum Laude from the University of Louisville School of Medicine before serving an internship at the university's hospital. Dr. Howell received his residency training at the Callahan Eye Foundation Hospital at the University of Alabama in Birmingham before going on to complete an additional year of fellowship training in pediatric ophthalmology and strabismus at Vanderbilt University in Nashville. He served as an Assistant Professor at the University of Kentucky Department of Ophthalmology, where he taught and supervised future ophthalmologists in the areas of pediatric ophthalmology and adult strabismus from 2007 to 2009. Dr Howell has also served on the Board of Trustees for Visually Impaired Preschool Services (VIPS) and the Kentucky Museum of Arts and Crafts (KMAC). What the staff wants you to know about Dr. Howell: Since joining Eye Associates in 2009, Dr. Howell's compassion has made him a staff favorite. Dr. Howell's patients usually come in two's-mom and child or dad and child. He cares not only for the child in his exam chair, but also for the family that is often worried about the child's vision. The possibility that the child may have a vision problem is scary, and Dr. Howell takes the time needed to help the parents. As a husband and as a father of two, he understands.

Tom Harper

Dr. Harper is a native Kentuckian. He practiced as a chemical engineer in the nuclear power industry prior to medical school. After his medical education at the University of Louisville School of Medicine in 2003, he finished his ophthalmology residency and retina fellowship at the world-famous Bascom Palmer Eye Institute in Miami, Florida. He was then selected by the faculty for a one-year appointment as Chief Resident following fellowship. When not seeing patients, Dr. Harper enjoys film, theater, martial arts and spending time with his family.
