Dr. Phillip Levin first became interested in the venous side of the circulation during his military service at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington D.C. where he and his colleagues showed that simultaneous repair of injured veins (when possible) along with arteries enhanced limb salvage in injured military personnel during the Vietnam conflict. After completing his military service in 1971, Dr. Levin joined Vascular Surgery Associates in Los Angeles which was and still is the premier vascular surgery group in the Southern California area. During the next 35 years Dr. Levin and his partners in VSA performed thousands of limb salvage and life saving operations primarily on the arterial side of the circulation. With the advent of catheter-based vascular procedures the treatment of vein disorders changed dramatically and Dr. Levin's interest in vein surgery was rekindled.
