Dr. Ali Abdullah Al Shamlan

Dr. Ali Abdullah Al Shamlan is the former Minister of Higher Education in Kuwait. At Kuwait University, he has held the positions of Professor, Chairman of the Department of Geology, Assistant Dean and Dean of the Faculty of Science. He is a member of the board of various institutions including Arabian Gulf University, Bahrain; Gulf University for Science and Technology, Kuwait; Oxford Center for Islamic Studies, Oxford University, United Kingdom; and the Prince Charles School of Traditional Arts; Kuwait University. Dr. Choon Fong Shih is University Professor at the National University of Singapore (NUS) and holds advisory roles with Peking University, University of Chinese Academy of Sciences, CAS Holdings, Southern University of Science and Technology, and Universiti Teknologi Petronas, among others. He was President of NUS (2000-2008) and subsequently Founding President of King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST), a graduate research university in Saudi Arabia, until 2013. Professor Shih is a foreign member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and US National Academy of Engineering. He received the French decoration Chevalier in the Order of the Legion d'Honneur in 2005 and the inaugural Chief Executive Leadership Award for Asia Pacific from the Council for Advancement and Support for Education in 2007. Drawing from experiences at leading US universities, Professor Shih was instrumental in remaking NUS as a research-intensive university with an entrepreneurial dimension. As NUS President, he led the modernization of the undergraduate curriculum, implemented a modular course system, expanded overseas student exchange programs, and strengthened academic partnerships with the world's leading universities. He was chairman of the Association of Pacific Rim Universities from 2002 to 2006 and was a key driver for the founding of the International Alliance of Research Universities in 2005. Leading KAUST in its formative years, Professor Shih promoted the university as a destination of choice for graduate education and cutting-edge research, where the synergy between education and research catalyzes ideas and innovations to address global challenges and improve lives. Planned from its inception with world-class research facilities and a Research Park and Innovation Cluster, KAUST is today a thriving work-play-live community of several thousand faculty, students, staff and families from more than 100 countries. Professor Shih received his MS and PhD from Harvard University. He divides his time between China, Singapore and US, where he is a Distinguished Visiting Professor at the University of California, Santa Barbara.

Dr. Cornelius M. Kerwin

Dr. Cornelius M. Kerwin became American University's 14th president in September 2007. He led an institution of about 13,000 students from 144 countries, 1,500 teaching and administrative faculty, and 1,800 staff in the nation's capital; oversaw a $700 million operating budget and $600 million endowment. Dr. Kerwin joined AU in 1975 and holds a faculty appointment in the School of Public Affairs, Department of Public Administration. He was Dean of the School of Public Affairs from 1988 to 1997; Provost from 1997 to 2005; and acting-then interim-President of American University from 2005 to 2017. Dr. Kerwin stepped down as President of American University on May 31, 2017 and returned to the faculty. A nationally recognized specialist in public policy and the regulatory process, Dr. Kerwin is actively engaged in research and periodically teaches courses in administrative process, policy implementation and American government. He founded AU's Center for the Study of Rulemaking and is the author of Rulemaking: How Government Agencies Write Law and Make Policy. The fifth edition of Rulemaking is currently under revision. He is also the author of numerous scholarly articles and professional publications. Dr. Kerwin is a fellow of the National Academy of Public Administration; a former president of the National Association of Schools of Public Affairs and Administration; and founding chair of the Section on Public Law and Administration of the American Society for Public Administration. He received degrees from American University (BA), the University of Rhode Island (MA, political science), and Johns Hopkins University (PhD, political science). Dr. Kerwin served as a member of the board of directors of the American Council on Education (ACE) (2012-15) and on the board of the National Association of Independent Colleges and Universities (NAICU) from February 2012 to February 2014. He is a member of the Executive Committee of the Greater Washington Board of Trade, the DC Chamber of Commerce, and the DC Government's Economic Strategy Advisory Committee. Dr. Kerwin chaired the Consortium of Universities of the Washington Metropolitan Area Board of Trustees (2013-15) and the Patriot League Council of Presidents (academic years 2013-14 and 2014-15). He is currently a Senior Fellow with the Institutional Resources Program of the Association of Governing Boards.
