Alan Brooks

Alan Brooks completed a 24-year career in the Royal Navy, 9 of which were spent flying in Anti-Submarine helicopters. Since moving to Bermuda 23 years ago, he has worked with a local bank, HWP and is currently Retail Manager with PW Marine. He also sits on the Marine Operations Board.

Alan Burland - Founder

Alan is a Co-Founder of the Bermuda Sloop Foundation serving as Chairman for the initial 17 years. With a civil engineering background and focus on value/quality engineering he oversaw the construction and commissioning of Spirit of Bermuda. Awarded MBE for service to the community in 2011. Advocate for experiential education and youth development. Keen sailor representing Bermuda at Olympics in 1984 along with numerous ocean passages since 2004. Retired civil engineer and commercial construction manager.

Jay Kempe - Founder

Jay is a Co-Founder of Bermuda Sloop Foundation, served as Deputy Chairman during its first 10 years and is again Deputy Chairman. As an attorney, he spearheaded the Foundation's legal requirements from start up to becoming fully operational. An experienced ocean racer, Jay participated in Spirit's sea trials, maiden voyage and subsequent races. Jay has represented Bermuda internationally in Athletics (800 metres) and Sailing at the 1992 Olympics (Tornado catamaran) and is a former executive member of Bermuda Olympic Association. Awarded Queen's Certificate and Badge of Honour in 2016 for services to the community and sport.

Kyle James

Kyle James is a business development professional who is a proud Bermudian ambassador. He enjoys travelling and immersing into new cultures and tasting new food. He is a passionate entrepreneur and enjoys mentoring students. He also sits on the Bermuda Economic Development Corporation Board.

Malcolm Kirkland - Founder

Malcolm is a Co-Founder of the Bermuda Sloop Foundation (1996), as start-up Product Developer (building, of course, on the legacy ‘Bermuda Sloop'), then as Executive Director & Director of Strategic Initiatives 2006-2012. Awarded Queen's Certificate and Badge of Honour in 2016 for services to the community. He remains passionate about Spirit of Bermuda as a world class and residential platform for teen development in Bermuda! Before this, co-founded the Bermuda Optimist Dinghy Association (our part of the global <16 sailing programme). Malcolm claims his early time aboard ocean racer ‘War Baby" was pivotal in understanding experiential learning.
