SWAMP - Key Persons

Barton Miller, a UW-Madison computer sciences professor, serves as Chief Scientist of the Software Assurance Marketplace (SWAMP). He provides assessment tools, software packages, and research leadership to ensure the effectiveness of the continuous software assurance research and testing facility. Miller is also one of the founders of Fuzz random testing, a foundational technique in testing and security. He also leads one of the major binary machine code analysis and instrumentation projects worldwide which distributes the widely-used Dyninst toolkit. In addition, Miller co-developed the widely-used First Principles Vulnerability Assessment, a manual approach to software assessment which focuses on the vulnerabilities most likely to provide access to high-value assets.

Jim Basney, of the National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA) Cybersecurity Directorate at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, serves as the Identity Management Lead for the Software Assurance Marketplace (SWAMP). He provides identity and access management solutions for the SWAMP and facilitates external connections with remote computing facilities and collaborators. Basney has over 10 years of experience developing and supporting identity and access management solutions for TeraGrid. As an InCommon technical advisory committee member and a Principal Investigator of the National Science Foundation-funded CILogon project, Basney works to enable interoperable identity and access management solutions across national and international production cyber infrastructures.

Miron Livny, a professor of computer sciences at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Chief Technology Officer at the Morgridge Institute for Research, and Director of the Center for High Throughput Computing, is a Principal Investigator for the Software Assurance Marketplace (SWAMP) and serves as its Director and Chief Technology Officer. He is responsible for setting the technical direction for the project and for ensuring that the SWAMP continues to meet the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's technical requirements. Livny pioneered distributed high throughput computing with the HTCondor project. He also serves as a Technical Director for the Open Science Grid.

Von Welch is Director of Indiana University's Center for Applied Cybersecurity Research (CACR) and serves as the Chief Information Security Officer for the Software Assurance Marketplace (SWAMP). In this role, he leads the definition and implementation of the cybersecurity program to manage risks to the SWAMP and its user community. Welch has a 20-year history of applying research to enhance operational cybersecurity. His previous positions include managing cybersecurity operations, research and development at the National Center for Supercomputing Applications, and serving as the leader for networking, operations, and security of the TeraGrid Project.
