Abiel Gebrehiwot

Abiel Gebrehiwot (Ah-Bell Geb-Ri-Hi-Wet) is a manager on the Drug User Health Team who is currently focusing on Strengthening the Capacity of SSPs to Respond to COVID-19. This program aims to strengthen the capacity of SSPs to serve as critically essential access points for COVID-19 services. Prior to Working at NASTAD, Abiel managed a syringe exchange in south Minneapolis called the Indigenous Peoples Task Force which aimed to strengthen the health and wellness of indigenous populations of Minnesota. Abiel also has experience as an advocate and served on planning committee's with and for tribal health services.

Alicyn Heinrich

Alicyn Heinrich, she/her/hers, is a manager on the Health Systems Integration (HSI) team. In her role, she coordinates efforts around technical assistance (TA) for the Systems Coordination Provider (SCP) project. She catalogs identified TA needs, shares best practices and peer-to-peer information with jurisdictions, and works across NASTAD programs and external stakeholders. Additionally, she leads projects and supports senior managers under the SCP project. Prior to joining NASTAD, Alicyn worked at Community-Based Organizations in Orlando, FL, providing prevention and case management services. She holds a B.S. in Public Health from the University of South Florida. She works remotely from Baltimore, MD.

Alison Gaye

Alison (al-ih-SIN) Gaye is a senior manager on the Drug User Health Team who is currently focusing on Strengthening the Capacity of SSPs to Respond to COVID-19. Prior to NASTAD, Alison worked for the Louisiana Department of Health as the first statewide syringe service program coordinator. In addition to governmental public health work, Alison has managed the largest SSP in the state of Louisiana and assisted in the development of the first Gender Affirming Care clinic in Louisiana.

Angela Johnson

Angela Johnson (AN - juhl - uh JAHN - suhn) is the Director, Development and Strategic Partnerships. She is responsible for identifying, developing, and securing funding to support NASTAD's mission and its program, policy, and overall operations. Prior to this role, Angela served as the Director, Prevention, leading NASTAD's CDC-funded technical assistance portfolio, and has worked in domestic and global HIV prevention for over 15 years. Angela received her M.P.H. in Behavioral Science and Health Education from Emory University, and a B.A. in African/African-American Studies and English Language/Literature from the University of Virginia.

Assiatu Bantama

Assiatu Bantama (Auh-see-auh-two Ban-tam-ah) is an Associate, Human Resources on the Administration Team. Beatriz Acevedo (be-a-trizis A-ce-ve-do), she/her/hers, is a senior director on the Health Equity team. Beatriz is a public health leader and educator. She has gained extensive firsthand experience in various roles such as program developer, facilitator, educator, and organizational leader. Her personal and professional life has been dedicated to promoting antiracism work and bringing marginalized communities to the forefront. Beatriz has played a pivotal role in leading organizations to develop the necessary culture, structures, and strategies to address racism and its impact on their work. She joins us from the Department of Public Health in Massachusetts, where she has been instrumental in leading racial and health equity initiatives. Her years of dedication to this work has equipped her with the expertise to lead and advance health equity while centering marginalized communities. Beatriz approaches her work with a combination of intellect, empathy, and practicality, ensuring that she is a responsive and adaptable leader.

Billy Golden

Billy provides technical assistance for various health department and community harm reduction programs in order to prioritize the health and well-being of people who use drugs. Dr. Rita Isabel Lechuga

Dr. Rita Isabel Lechuga (Isabel) is an associate director on the Hepatitis team. As the Associate Director, her scope of work includes expanded oversight of team work plans, implementation of relevant strategic plan objectives, and fiscal management and oversight. Previously, she was part of NASTAD's Global team, overseeing HIV case-based surveillance system strengthening interventions in five countries in Central America. Before NASTAD, Isabel worked as a consultant for the regional office of the World Health Organization, PAHO, leading research studies on HIV, viral hepatitis and child health and as a physician with the Mexican Secretariat of Health. Isabel holds a Doctor of Medicine (MD) from the National Autonomous University of Mexico and a Master of Public Health (MPH) from George Washington University.

Dr. Stephen Lee

Dr. Stephen Lee is the executive director of NASTAD. Stephen oversees all NASTAD programs - Health Care Access, Prevention, Hepatitis, Drug User Health, Health Equity, Policy & Legislative Affairs, and Health Systems Integration - as well as NASTAD's overall operations. Stephen has deep expertise in program and organizational management, and his experience as a physician brings a practical perspective with regard to policy and program implementation. Prior to joining NASTAD, Stephen was a global HIV expert for the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation, where for 13 years he managed the development and implementation of programs that provided prevention, care, and treatment services to individuals affected by HIV. He has a bachelor's degree in biology from Baylor University, a degree in medicine from Emory University School of Medicine, an MBA from Heriot Watt University, and a post graduate diploma in health systems management from the University of London, School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.

Edwin Corbin-Gutiérrez

Edwin Corbin-Gutierrez serves as Senior Program Advisor at NASTAD. In this role, he serves as a technical expert and works across programs to advance NASTAD's four strategic priority areas by maximizing opportunities for collaboration and innovation. Edwin joined NASTAD in 2014 and most recently served as the director of the Health Systems Integration team, leading NASTAD's efforts to bridge public health and health care systems and managing several HRSA- and CDC-funded cooperative agreements. Edwin brings expertise in forging partnerships between public health delivery systems and health care payment and delivery systems, particularly Medicaid programs. Other work areas include innovative financing mechanisms for HIV and hepatitis C, including 340B Drug Pricing Program revenue and health care coverage for preventive services.

Erin Bascom (AIR-rin BAS-com) is the associate director for the Capacity Building Assistance (CBA) program within NASTAD's Prevention team. She provides expertise across the Prevention team related to integrated HIV prevention and surveillance activities, including data-to-care and HIV cluster and outbreak response. Erin received her M.P.H. with a focus in Maternal and Child Health from George Washington University, and her B.A. in Art History and English and American Literature from New York University. Erin is based in Northern Virginia.

Gerald J. Campos

Gerald J. Campos is a manager for the Prevention Team. He oversees the CBO Hub and NASTAD's podcast, Southern Steep: Brewing Stronger Community. He also develops and implements TA activities for NASTAD's CBA program around Partner Services and other CBA-related topics. Before joining NASTAD, Gerald worked as an HIV Testing & Demo Project Coordinator at the Hawaii State Department of Health. Prior to that, he served as a Disease Intervention Specialist (DIS) Supervisor at the Florida Department of Health in Miami-Dade County. An avid traveler and learner, Gerald has attended universities both internationally and domestically. He most recently completed his MBA at the IESEG School of Management in Paris, France, and has two other master's degrees, one in Health Studies from the University of Alabama, and the other in Infectious Disease Control from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. Julio Contreras

Julio Contreras is a manager on the Policy & Legislative Affairs team. He supports the federal appropriations and policy advocacy work for the viral hepatitis and drug user health policy portfolios, including convening the Hepatitis Appropriations Partnership coalition. Julio joined NASTAD from Planned Parenthood Federation of America (PPFA), where he assisted the I Stand with Planned Parenthood campaign against the Title X "Gag Rule" and tracked federal regulations and rulemaking for the policy team. Before PPFA, Julio was an Equality Fellow at the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC), where he supported LGBTQ Latine/x coalition building and conference programming with LULAC members and partner organizations across the country. Julio graduated from Georgetown University in 2018 with a bachelor's degree in philosophy and minors in Russian language and cognitive science. Julio is based in Washington, DC.

Lillie Armstrong is a senior manager on the Drug User Health team. Lillie works across project areas to assist in the development of public health programs that represent and respond to the experiences and needs of people who use drugs. She provides technical assistance and programmatic support to state health departments, community-based organizations, and allied entities seeking to improve the quality of and access to care for people who use drugs. Lillie has worked in harm reduction for over a decade and most recently led the North Carolina Safer Syringe Initiative, implementing syringe access legislation statewide, at NC Division of Public Health. Lillie holds an M.P.H. in Health Behavior from the University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill, where she was a FLAS Fellow in Arabic and Middle Eastern Studies, and a B.A. in Sociology (Social Movements and Inequality) and Linguistics from the University of Pittsburgh.

Logan Benton

Logan Benton (LOH-guhn Ben-tuhn), she/they, is a senior manager on the Drug User Health team. She supports the team by leading the Strengthening Syringe Service Programs project, providing low-threshold direct funding and enhanced capacity building to SSPs across the country while centering the Disability Justice framework of "nothing about us without us." Prior to NASTAD, Logan implemented low-barrier, participatory, and trust-based harm reduction grantmaking initiatives across the state of California and Greater Appalachia, facilitated Ryan White Part B funding for the state of Alabama and worked in direct service at an HIV clinic/ASO. They have implemented harm reduction personally for fifteen years and professionally for approximately the last decade, continuing to provide community care through a local mutual aid harm reduction program. They hold a Bachelor of Social Work with a minor in English from Jacksonville State University. Logan works remotely from a small town in central Alabama.

Maeve Lynch (MEY​-V LihNCH) is an associate on the Communications team at NASTAD. Mark Freeman

Mark Freeman, he/him/his, is a senior manager on the Meetings & Travel team. Before joining NASTAD, Mark spent over 15 years planning and executing meetings, conferences, and training programs for in-person, virtual, and hybrid events. Over the years, he has leveraged strong relationships with the Convention and Visitors Bureaus nationwide, creating memorable programs that make lasting impressions on attendees. In addition, Mark has worked with public health officials and entities like NIH, CDC, and AHRQ, as well as with domestic and international venues and destinations, coordinating and managing executive retreats and incentive programs in North America, Canada, Mexico, Europe, and Asia. Mark studied Business/Corporate Communications at Howard University, has received training in Unconscious Bias, and is passionate about diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI).

Matty Helton

Matty Helton, they/them, is a senior associate on the Prevention team. They support the implementation of community engagement technical assistance (TA) related to Ending the HIV Epidemic (EHE) plans within the Capacity Building Assistance Program (CBA), specifically contributing to virtual engagement efforts between the CDC and Phase 1 jurisdictions. Their portfolio also supports EHE programming, administering the CBA Tracking System (CTS), and developing resources at the intersection of HIV and aging. Prior to joining NASTAD, Matty worked as an independent research contractor with Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS, coordinating a national research study compiling an oral history of Long Term Survivors (LTS) of HIV/AIDS. Matty also previously worked at the U.S. Department of State in the Office of the U.S. Global AIDS Coordinator & U.S. Special Representative for Global Health Diplomacy, where they supported the implementation of the President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR). They hold a Bachelor of Interdisciplinary Studies in Global Public Health Advocacy from Virginia Commonwealth University.

Natalie Cramer is the deputy executive director of Programs at NASTAD. Natalie oversees NASTAD's programmatic and policy teams. In the Deputy ED role, she plays a central role in the strategic direction and management of the organization. She has over 25 years of experience working in public health at the state and national levels with a focus on HIV prevention and drug user health, including more than 11 years working for the Massachusetts Department of Public Health. Natalie received her M.S. in Social Work from the University of Texas at Austin with a specialization in Community, Administration, and Leadership and B.A. in Art History from Bates College.

Nicole Elinoff

Prior to joining NASTAD, Rey served as the Manager of Technical Assistance at Howard Brown Health, where he managed a team that partnered with the Chicago Department of Public Health to support the COVID-19 response across 28 hospitals and federally qualified health centers (FQHCs) in Chicago. He has previously done significant work in the areas of HIV engagement and retention in care, education, and advocacy. Rey received his M.S.W. with a specialization in Children and Families from the University of Illinois Chicago. Rey is based in Chicago.

Shanice Bailey (shuh-NEESE bay-LEE) is a senior associate on the Communications and Health Equity teams. She provides communications support for health equity initiatives and other projects across NASTAD and supports DEI efforts through her work on the Minority Leadership Program, Anti-racism Work Group, and THRASH (Trans Harm Reduction and Sexual Health), an internal working group dedicated to trans activism and liberation. She also co-hosts the Southern Steep podcast for NASTAD's CBO Hub. Prior to joining NASTAD, Shanice worked as a curator and researcher with a focus on contemporary art, queer history, and the intersections of art and activism. She received her B.A. in American Studies from Smith College, where she studied the visual culture of the AIDS crisis as a Mellon-Mays Undergraduate Fellow.

Sharday Lewis

Sharday Lewis (Shar-day Loo-is) is an associate director on the Drug User Health team. She leads the Strengthening the Capacity of SSPs to Respond to COVID-19 project which aims to strengthen the capacity of SSPs to serve as critically essential access points for COVID-19 vaccination services and broaden adult vaccination services for people who use drugs project. Prior to NASTAD, Sharday worked building out harm reduction infrastructure and capacity building strategies for the city of Washington, DC. With a background in trauma-informed approaches, change management, and HIV/AIDS and substance use prevention, Sharday is passionate about advancing systems change rooted in equity and justice. She holds a B.S in Allied Health Sciences from Howard University (Washington, DC) and an MPH in Management and Policy from SUNY Albany (Albany, NY).

Tim Horn

Tim Horn is a director on NASTAD's Public Health Systems team and is focused on advancing the organization's biomedical intervention access priorities. He supports training and technical assistance activities related to strengthening the capacity of AIDS Drug Assistance Programs (ADAP) for people living with HIV/AIDS, pre-exposure prophylaxis and post-exposure prophylaxis programs for people vulnerable to HIV infection, and viral hepatitis elimination strategies. Tim also works closely with NASTAD's Policy and Legislative Affairs team on national prescription drug pricing and financing priorities, including 340B Drug Pricing Program policy navigation and sustainability. He has been engaged in HIV treatment and prevention research education and advocacy for more than 30 years.

Van Wilson (væn ˈwɪlsən), he/him/his, is an associate director on the Health System Integration team. He works to strengthen the technical systems connecting myriad providers and payors involved in delivering care for people who live with HIV/AIDS and Hepatitis C. Prior to NASTAD, Van gained experience in a number of related fields: Medicaid programming and care coordination, substance use prevention, and older adult community support. Virginie Carey

Virginie Carey (she/her/hers) is the deputy executive director of Operations at NASTAD and as such, she oversees the finance and accounting, human resources, procurement, travel and meetings, and administration teams. She plays a key part in managing and advancing NASTAD by leveraging her expertise to grow NASTAD's vision, values, and mission strategically and sustainably. She has over 25 years of experience in the NGO and nonprofit sector. Prior to joining NASTAD, Virginie was Vice President, Finance and Operations for Washington Area Women's Foundation. Virginie also serves as treasurer of the board of Dumbarton Arts & Education, a DC area nonprofit aiming at building a community around music and enhancing the quality of education in DC's most economically disadvantaged communities using the transformative power of the arts. Virginie holds an MBA from the George Washington University.

Welcome new staff member, Yamil Cruz! Yamil joins NASTAD as a manager on the Health System Integration team. Yamil Cruz, he/him/his, is a senior manager on the Health Systems Integration team at NASTAD. As a senior manager, Yamil plays a crucial role in ensuring the success of our technical assistance team by driving the provision of technical assistance to the 47 EHE jurisdictions. Additionally, he leads efforts to coordinate EHE programming across various EHE funding sources. Yamil brings a wealth of public health knowledge and expertise to his role at NASTAD. Prior to NASTAD, Yamil had 12-plus years of experience optimizing strategies to improve health outcomes in the community and creating strong relationships with community health partners, and most recently served as a program manager at Midway Specialty Care Center, where he oversaw linkage to care and prevention programs. Yamil is based in Florida.

Zakiya Grubbs

Zakiya Grubbs is a Manager on the Hepatitis team. She primarily supports prevention and surveillance capacity building through NASTAD's online technical assistance center for hepatitis. Prior to NASTAD, Zakiya was the Viral Hepatitis Program Coordinator at the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control, where she worked with community partners on HCV testing and referral and developed a comprehensive statewide VH strategic plan. She received her MPH in Global Health from George Washington University and a B.S. in Health Education from Howard University. She works remotely from Columbia, SC.
