After graduating from Harvard University with a degree in Art History, he started working at Christie's in 1983. He rose to become Director of European Furniture at Christie's USA, overseeing a team of 15 people and organizing up to 20 high-profile auctions a year... In late 1995, Christie's sent him to Paris to head the Furniture Department and to help direct the expansion of the French operations in advance of the opening up of the French market to foreign competitors.
