Heather M. Tamez, M.D. is a Retina Specialist & Vitreoretinal Surgeon at The Retina Care Center with offices in Maryland, Pennsylvania & Delaware. Dr. Tamez specializes in the medical and surgical management of vitreoretinal diseases including Diabetic Retinopathy, Macular Degeneration, Retinal Tears and Detachments, Macular holes and Puckers, and Retinal Vascular Disorders. She also has extensive experience managing ocular trauma and complications following cataract surgery, including placing intraocular lenses when this was not possible during the initial surgery. In addition to managing retinal diseases, Dr. Tamez also has an interest and experience treating uveitis, inflammation that can impact any part of the eye and often requires treatment with immunosuppressive medications. Regardless of the disease process, she strives to educate her patients about their eye disease and make treatment plans with them that will be both manageable and ensure the best long-term eye health and vision possible. Dr. Tamez is a Baltimore-native and graduate of the Friends School of Baltimore. Since completing her training away from home, she is excited to be caring for patients where she grew up and working hard to bring the best possible eye care to the region.

Matthew A. Speicher

Matthew A. Speicher, M.D. is a Retina Specialist & Vitreoretinal Surgeon at The Retina Care Center with offices in Maryland, Pennsylvania & Delaware. Dr. Speicher is an expert in the medical and surgical management of vitreoretinal diseases including Macular Degeneration, Diabetic Retinopathy, Retinal Vein Occlusion, Retinal Tears and Detachments, Macular Holes and Puckers, Ocular Trauma, and complications following Intraocular Surgery. During his vitreoretinal fellowship, he participated in research leading to effective management of previously untreatable conditions such as macular degeneration. Since joining the practice in 2003, he has continued his involvement in clinical trials searching for improved therapies for various common retinal disorders. Dr. Speicher employs the latest surgical techniques resulting in less invasive and more effective procedures. He enjoys sharing his expertise with residents-in-training who rotate through the office and with the larger community of eye care providers. Together with his partners, Dr. Speicher hosts regular educational lectures for referring doctors. The newest diagnostic and therapeutic techniques are shared in an open discussion, leading to an increased awareness of retinal diseases, earlier detection and referral, prompt treatment, and improved visual outcomes.

Newman J. Sund

Newman J. Sund, M.D., Ph.D. is a Retina Specialist & Vitreoretinal Surgeon at The Retina Care Center with offices in Maryland, Pennsylvania & Delaware. He is actively involved in clinical research including landmark studies for medications used in the treatment of wet and dry Age-Related Macular Degeneration, Diabetic Retinopathy, and Retinal Vein Occlusions. Dr. Sund has an interest in information technology and has used this knowledge to implement a fully integrated Electronic Health Record system at The Retina Care Center improving patient care and communication with patients and referral doctors alike. Dr. Sund also assists in federal regulatory compliance to ensure patients and their records are private and secure.

Timothy D. Polk

Timothy D. Polk, M.D. is a Retina Specialist & Vitreoretinal Surgeon at The Retina Care Center with offices in Maryland, Pennsylvania & Delaware. Dr. Polk has been in practice since 1997 and specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the retina and vitreous. He is an expert in the management of macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, retinal detachments, retinal vein occlusions, and macular holes and puckers. He has published numerous professional articles and book chapters and has been an investigator for almost twenty national, multi-center clinical trials. Dr. Polk received his retina fellowship training at two of the most prestigious institutions in the world. At the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, he worked with J. Donald M. Gass, M.D., considered by many to be the father of medical retina as a subspecialty. At the University of Iowa, he learned the latest techniques in complex vitreoretinal surgery and received extensive training in the diagnosis and treatment of hereditary retinal disease. Dr. Polk lives in Lutherville with his wife Ingrid. He enjoys tennis and golf, and plays the guitar and piano.
