At the time of a birth, the umbilical cord and the blood within it has been identified as a useful source of two types of stem cells. The first type of stem cells are the haematopoietic stem cells (bone marrow stem cells) and they are the fundamental building blocks of our blood and immune systems. Throughout life, haematopoietic stem cells multiply and mature into red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets. The second type of stem cells are the mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) and are isolated from the umbilical cord tissue. These MSCs are the building blocks of the structural tissues (bone, cartilage, muscle, and fibrous tissues) of our body. Expectant parents have the option to either bank or donate these potentially life saving stem cells for future use.
