Carl Matthes

Mr. Matthes is an exponent of the music of J.S. Bach and contemporary music by American composers. He gave the London debut of the "Passacaglia" by Walter Piston, the American debut of the "Piano Concerto" by Joseph Wagner, and the West Coast premiere of the "New Pictures at an Exhibition" by Seymour Bernstein. He was a candidate for a Rockefeller Foundation grant to record the piano music of Aaron Copland and has appeared on four occasions at the MTAC State Convention as performer/lecturer on the Music of J.S. Bach and contemporary American music. Mr. Matthes served as Executive Director of SYMF for 29 years and is most proud of instituting SYMF's American Music categories (1981), the Chopin categories (1983), the formation of SYMF's Festival Orchestra (1987), and in 2000, the Benefit Recital in Zipper Hall at The Colburn School in honor of Aaron Copland's 100th birthday.
