Adilene Nuñez Huang

Adilene Nuñez Huang joined Tahirih in 2018. Adilene most recently served as the Managing Attorney for the Greater DC office. In her current role as the Co-Director of Client Advocacy, Legal Services, Adilene ensures that interdisciplinary client services teams have the infrastructure in place and necessary tools to deliver smooth, efficient, high-quality, client-centered, and trauma-informed services to immigrant survivors of gender-based violence. Adilene is an active member of the AILA DC chapter, has written on bond issues, cancellation of removal for non-lawful permanent residents, has spoken at the national AILA conference and local chapter conference, and she regularly hosts trainings for the Tahirih Pro Bono network to help pro bono attorneys develop practical, trauma-informed, and client-centered best practices for working with immigrant survivors of violence. Prior to joining Tahirih, Adilene advocated for immigrants at a boutique immigration law firm in Washington, DC. "I am inspired by Tahirih's holistic approach to client services. Tahirih not only provides women and girls with immigration and family law assistance and connects clients to social services, but Tahirih also works to advocate for policy changes so that women and girls can live in safety and with dignity. Adriana López

Adriana López joined Tahirih in 2017. Previously the Social Services Program Manager at Tahirih's Greater DC office, Adriana brings nine years of experience advancing immigrants and gender-justice causes through advocacy, training and capacity-building, program development, and direct service work. As Co-Director of Client Advocacy, Adriana strengthens Tahirih's interdisciplinary model of service, where legal and social services staff comprise one interdisciplinary team to holistically address clients' needs and increase their access to safety and justice. Prior to joining Tahirih, Adriana worked at the New York City Alliance Against Sexual Assault, Kids In Need of Defense (KIND), and the Equal Rights Center. She has lived abroad in Latin America, the Caribbean and Europe.

Aicha Abdoulaye

Aicha Abdoulaye is a survivor, an entrepreneur, a public speaker, and an advocate for survivors of human trafficking and forced marriages. She has been working with the Tahirih Justice Center since 2007. She was honored with the Courageous Voices Award in 2018, and has been a Client Ambassador since 2019, giving speeches, telling her story, and advocating for other survivors. She has recently completed her Google IT Support Professional Certificate and is in the process of setting up an online business selling African jewelry and accessories. As a former Tahirih client Aicha continues to be an asset through her firsthand experience with the organization and navigating the legal and justice systems in the U.S.

Alex Goyette

Alex joined Tahirih in 2017 as a Policy Associate. He supports the policy team's advocacy initiatives to pass legislation, develop regulations, transform policies, and set legislative precedents. Prior to joining Tahirih, Alex worked as an interpreter and administrative assistant at Bayside Pediatrics in Annapolis, and interned with the International Rescue Committee in Baltimore. Alexandra "Sasha" Bershad

After engagement with Tahirih as a legal intern and volunteer attorney in 2014, Sasha rejoined Tahirih in 2017. As an Immigration and Family Law Senior Supervising Attorney, Sasha represents and advocates alongside immigrant survivors of gender-based violence on their journeys to safety and justice. Sasha provides advice, counseling, and direct legal representation to survivors in affirmative and defensive asylum, VAWA, T visa and U visa cases, and in domestic relations matters such as divorce, custody, support, protective orders, and Special Immigrant Juvenile Status. Prior to Tahirih, Sasha worked as Senior Direct Representation Attorney for Kids In Need of Defense (KIND), where she represented unaccompanied immigration children in removal proceedings. Sasha was the recipient of the Virginia State Bar Young Lawyers Conference Significant Service Award for the 2015-2017 bar years for her contributions as a Program Chair for the Immigrant Outreach Committee. While in law school, Sasha represented her first client in an affirmative asylum matter as a student attorney in the Refugee and Human Rights Clinic. Sasha was born in Moldova and has spent time abroad in the UK, Europe, Central and South America, and Asia.

Alexis Fekete-Shukla

As Grant Writer, Alexis is responsible for writing grant proposals and reports for funders who support Tahirih's five local offices, informing current and potential foundation funders about Tahirih's important work and our progress against proposed goals. Alexis joined Tahirih in 2022. Prior to joining Tahirih, Alexis was the Director of Advancement and Planning at the Spencer Museum of Art at the University of Kansas, where she led grant writing and all other fundraising activities and chaired the Museum's diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility steering committee-Museums Empowered. She has also worked as a grant writer at the Lied Center of Kansas performing arts center, interned at the Robert J. Dole Archive and Special Collections, and served as Children's Liaison for two years at the Milton Public Library.

Andrew Connor is the Chief Operating Officer of Japan Society, the premier organization connecting Japanese arts, culture, business, and society with audiences in New York and around the world. As a member of the leadership team, he is also involved in key external strategic initiatives and management of the Office of the President. Andrew previously served as CHRO for Eurasia Group and its subsidiary GZERO Media. As a member of Eurasia Group's leadership team and head of HR and Administration, Andrew held global responsibility for an employee population in 8 offices spanning 5 countries. Andrew's prior experience includes work as vice president of an Asia-focused executive search and HR consulting firm, where he managed full-cycle recruiting projects for major multinational corporations doing business throughout the Asia-Pacific region. He began his career as Office Manager of Tahirih Justice Center nearly 20 years ago. Andrew, who graduated summa cum laude from Hamilton College with a bachelor's degree in Chinese language and Russian studies, speaks Mandarin Chinese and has spent time studying and working in Russia, China, Bangladesh, and the UK. He has also completed courses of study at SOAS University of London and the Capital University of Economics and Business in Beijing. A linguist at heart and an avid reader and traveler, Andrew has visited more than 45 countries, including overland travel from Hanoi to London. Andrew, his wife and two children spend their time in central New Jersey by necessity and the Champlain Islands of Vermont by choice.

Andy Grammer

Andy Grammer is a Platinum-selling singer-songwriter with a long-standing commitment to the mission of Tahirih Justice Center. With his 2011 self-titled debut album, Andy became the first male pop star in a decade, since John Mayer in 2002, to reach the Top 10 at Adult Pop Radio on his first two singles, "Keep Your Head Up" and "Fine By Me." The songs sold more than 1.5 million downloads combined. In just a few short years, Andy has gone on to sell over 100,000 albums, play sold out venues nationwide, perform onstage with Taylor Swift, Train, and Colbie Caillat, appear on an array of national TV shows (including "Dancing with the Stars"), and receive two BMI Pop Music Awards, among many other accomplishments. In 2013, Andy launched the KathyGramm campaign with Tahirih Justice Center to raise thousands of dollars to protect immigrant women and girls fleeing violence. The campaign honored the memory of his late mother, who was dedicated to women's issues. Since then, Andy has continually tapped into his star power to help women and girls in danger, and he played a key role in Tahirih's 2015 Baltimore-Greater DC Bighearted Attorneys Campaign.

Anusce Sanai

Anusce Sanai (she/her/ella) joined the Tahirih Justice Center in 2012. Anusce is a dedicated and experienced attorney with 10 years of direct legal services and management work in the immigration nonprofit field. She continues to strive for the advancement of equal rights, social justice and race unity while working with survivors of gender-based violence. At the core of her career is a deep-rooted passion for the eradication of systemic racism and oppressive structures that marginalize vulnerable demographics. Since May 2021, Archi Pyati has served as Chief Executive Officer of the Tahirih Justice Center, taking on the task of leading Tahirih in its service to more than 30,000 women, girls, and other immigrant survivors seeking safety from gender-based violence. Archi was the Chief of Policy and Communications at Tahirih before assuming the role of CEO. As the Chief of Policy and Communications, Archi led the policy team in using survivor-centered policy advocacy to assist clients in securing the rights that they are entitled, to rebuild their lives. Archi is also a spokesperson for Tahirih, connecting with lawmakers, media, funders and on coalitions such as the National Task Force to End Sexual and Domestic Violence. Before joining Tahirih, Archi served as Deputy Director of the Immigration Intervention Project at Sanctuary for Families in New York, where she ran a pro bono asylum program and worked with survivors to end female genital mutilation/cutting (FGM/C) from occurring in the United States. Prior to joining Sanctuary for Families, Archi was a senior associate with the Human Rights Defenders Program of Human Rights First. She brings nearly twenty years of experience in immigration law, women's rights, and public policy advocacy to the CEO role. Archi is a graduate of Brown University and the University of Michigan Law School, where she was named Outstanding Woman Law Student of the Year by the Michigan Women Lawyers' Association.

Brigida Benitez

Brigida Benitez has been an attorney for almost 30 years, focusing on complex litigation, internal investigations, and global anti-corruption matters. Daniella Prieshoff

As a Senior Supervising Attorney, Daniella advocates alongside immigrant survivors of gender-based violence on their journeys to justice. She provides trauma-informed counsel and legal representation to survivors in defensive and affirmative asylum, VAWA petitions, T visa and U visa petitions, and Special Immigrant Juvenile Status before immigration courts, the Board of Immigration Appeals, and U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Daniella also advocates for survivors in their protective order, divorce, and child custody petitions before Maryland state courts.

Dr. Neha Batool

Dr. Neha Batool is a first-generation immigrant from Pakistan. She earned her doctoral degree in counseling psychology in 2021 at the University of North Dakota. She is a licensed psychologist at Compass Health Network in Columbia, Missouri and embodies a multicultural and integrative approach as a core value, reflecting on aspects of socio-cultural, developmental, and contextual framework. Her clinical work consists of provision of supervision, psychological assessments, and psychotherapy services, which primarily incorporate Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) and Internal Family Systems (IFS). Dr. Batool is a former Tahirih client. Her passion to support and empower women experiencing gender-based violence led to her dissertation research project entitled, Mental Health Impact of Forced Marriages. Through presentations and trainings grounded in her research, she hopes to continue to increase awareness and understanding of forced marriages within the field of mental health.

Dulce Jacobo

Dulce joined Tahirih in 2021. As the Senior Social Services Advocate in the Atlanta office, Dulce conducts biopsychosocial needs assessments for Tahirih clients. She collaborates with the legal and social service teams to provide trauma-informed and client-centered services. Dulce provides crisis intervention, safety planning and education on victim's rights to Tahirih clients. She collaborates with various community agents to connect service seekers to the necessary resources that can empower them and support them through their journey. Prior to joining Tahirih, Dulce worked as a Medical Social Worker in interdisciplinary medical teams at Mount Sinai Hospital in NYC and Children's Healthcare of Atlanta in Georgia. Throughout her work experience she conducted biopsychosocial assessments, crisis intervention and comprehensive care coordination services by advocating and connecting patients to various resources. Dulce was part of a study abroad summer program in Costa Rica during her undergraduate years at Georgia State University. She analyzed the difference in policies and implementation of social services between Costa Rica and the USA.

Eileen Espinal

Eileen joined the Tahirih Justice Center in 2018. As Senior Social Services Program Manager, Eileen provides holistic, culturally-competent, and trauma-informed services to immigrant survivors of gender-based violence. Our client-centered Social Services program connects our clients to appropriate and accessible resources to support their goals. Eileen engages in outreach and advocacy to spread awareness about the challenges facing survivors of gender-based violence in Georgia's immigrant community. Eileen also manages Tahirih Atlanta's Volunteer Program, connecting our supporters to our programs to empower the families that we serve. Prior to joining Tahirih, Eileen served as Community Youth Advocate with the Southern Poverty Law Center, where she conducted outreach and support to students, incarcerated persons, and immigrants across Florida. Prior to that, Eileen served with Camillus House, an organization assisting the poor and the homeless in the South Florida community. Eileen served as their Community Manager as well as a Case Manager for the women's employment and housing opportunity program. Layli Miller-Muro is the founder of the Tahirih Justice Center. She established Tahirih in 1997 following her involvement in a high-profile case that set national precedent and revolutionized asylum law in the United States. Fauziya Kassindja, a 17-year-old girl who had fled Togo in fear of a forced polygamous marriage and female genital mutilation/cutting (FGM/C), was granted asylum in 1996 by the U.S. Board of Immigration Appeals. This decision opened the door to gender-based persecution as grounds for asylum. Using her portion of the proceeds from the book Layli and Fauziya co-authored about the case, "Do They Hear You When You Cry?," Layli created the Tahirih Justice Center in 1997 to serve immigrant survivors of gender-based violence seeking safety and justice. Layli led Tahirih in its service to more than 31,000 women and children, growing the non-profit from a staff of six to over 100, and expanding its offices from Greater DC to Houston, Baltimore, Atlanta, and the San Francisco Bay Area. In recognition of its sound management and innovative programs, under Layli's leadership, Tahirih won the Washington Post Award for Management Excellence and gained recognition for its innovative use of pro bono services in the Stanford Social Innovation Review. Maricarmen Garza joined Tahirih in 2021 as the Chief of Programs. She previously held a 21-year tenure with Texas RioGrande Legal Aid (TRLA). As a TRLA attorney, Maricarmen focused her legal practice on assisting survivors of gender-based violence with complex family law and victim privacy matters. She initiated and managed one of TRLA's most successful, and longstanding projects of the organization, the Legal Alliance for Survivors of Abuse (LASA). LASA is a unique collaboration between TRLA and domestic violence shelters and rape crisis centers in the 68 Texas counties served by TRLA. Through the LASA Project partnership, Maricarmen ensured that victims received holistic, trauma-informed, and victim centered legal and social services critical to breaking the cycle of violence. In 2010 the LASA project received The Mary Byron Project's Celebrating Solutions Award for its innovative approach to breaking the generational cycle of intimate partner violence. Maricarmen also managed TRLA's Victim Rights Group which included the Legal Aid for Survivors of Sexual Assault team and the Survivor Centered Economic Advocacy team, providing direction, mentorship and supervision. Maricarmen currently serves on the ABA Commission on Domestic and Sexual Violence (ABA CDSV) and on the boards of the Texas statewide coalitions for domestic violence (TCFV) and for sexual assault (TAASA). In 2003, she joined Promise Place to expand domestic violence services in Fayette county to several new counties within the judicial circuit. With the opening of that area's first state certified domestic violence shelter in 2007, Vanessa took on the position of Shelter Director, assisting in developing the framework for services provided to clients. She then served as Executive Director for the next ten years. As Promise Place Executive Director, Vanessa developed numerous domestic violence initiatives for the community. One of these initiatives was featured in the 11th annual Georgia Domestic Violence Fatality Review report. In February 2015, Vanessa was appointed by Governor Nathan Deal to the Georgia Commission of Family Violence where she served for 3 years. She received a Pinnacle Leadership award in 2017 for outstanding community leadership and was recognized with a Phenomenal Woman award in 2021 for her 17 years of service to the community. Prior to joining Tahirih, Yanitza served as an Immigration Attorney for Catholic Charities of Baltimore, where she provided direct legal representation to individuals in removal proceedings, VAWA, U Visa and Adjustment of Status. She also assisted in mentoring Pro Bono Attorneys and conducted presentations on immigration benefits and relief.
