BASIRHAT COLLEGE

Basirhat College, by the side of the murmuring Ichhamati, the first fruit of independence for Basirhat, came into being on November 16, 1947. Since then it has been an active gateway of higher education for pupils coming across a vast area expanding from the wet land of Sundarbans in the north to Baduria in the south and Ghojadanga in the east to Haroa in the west. Such a long-cherished dream could not have taken practical shape without an extremely generous and visionary patronage of a noble soul, Khan Bahadur A.F.M. Abdur Rahaman. Mr. Rahaman, besides extending substantive financial support, made his dwelling place a seat for imparting knowledge to people sunk in the darkness of ignorance during the rule of the British. Initially it was an institution for students of intermediate course, i.e., for students pursuing I.A. degree.Gradually it became a degree level college offering courses for Pass Graduation in humanities and commerce.
