Here comes the basic advantage with digital signals. Since we are dealing with some numbers (samples) which represent our audio signal and not with some voltage which can have almost any value, we can transfer these samples without any degradation or change. This is like copying numbers from one sheet to another. We can be 100% sure we have an identical copy, the same numbers on both sheets. This is the fundamental advantage of digital signals. With these samples (numbers that represent our audio signal) we can do every possible filtering, effect or processing as with analog audio signal. This is the job of audio software. It takes digital audio as a sequence of samples (numbers), processes them and finally outputs them to a file or some device... This is the basic principle of any digital audio processing or software.
