Andre Van Wyk

Dewald Joubert

Dewald Joubert has been a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Accountancy at the University of Johannesburg (UJ) since 2004. Dewald is the Subject Head in Managerial Accounting and Finance. He also lectures on the PGDAS and several other post graduate programs. He has been involved with the Gauteng Board Course since 2005 and has lectured on APT since 2012. Although Dewald is also an entrepreneur his real passion lies in education with a passion in developing critical thinking. Dewald is a CA (SA) and holds a Master's Degree in Financial Management.

Elmarie Goodchild

Elmarie Goodchild has been a Senior Lecturer at the University of the Free State since 2009 and is lecturing Auditing and Corporate Governance at PGDA level (CTA level). She commenced her studies at the Rand Afrikaans University (now University of Johannesburg) in 1998 by first completing her B Com Law degree. After that, she completed her B Com Accounting and B Com Hons (Accounting) degrees. She completed her articles at Deloitte and qualified as a Chartered Accountant in 2006. She obtained her Master's Degree in Auditing (Corporate governance) at the University of the Free State in 2016. After completing her Master's degree, she published several articles in accredited journals and presented at conferences on Corporate Governance and Accounting Education. Elmarie is actively involved at the South African Institute of Chartered Accountants (SAICA). She has set several ITC papers and has marked the ITC and APC for several years. She has also served as Umpire for the Initial Test of Competence (ITC) and the Assessment of Professional Competence (APC) examinations. She has participated in a number of Academic accreditation reviews on behalf of SAICA. Elmarie is passionate about audit quality and has served on the Independent Regulatory Board of Auditors' (IRBA) Inspections Committee (INSCOM) since 2017. Elmarie was appointed as the Chairperson of the INSCOM at the beginning of 2022.

Husain Coovadia

Husain is a Senior Lecturer in Accounting at UJ since 2015. He is Deputy Head of the Department of Commercial Accounting. He did his traineeship through PwC and completed his CA(SA) qualification in 2012. He has completed his MCom in Accounting in 2015 and is currently completing his PhD in Governance and Artificial Intelligence. He has also completed various courses at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), specifically on business strategy and AI and quantum computing. Husain was selected as one of SAICA's top 35 under 35 for the year 2017. He is also the winner of the Vice Chancellor award for best young lecturer at the University of Johannesburg for 2016. He was selected to presented at a number of conferences globally including at Wharton Business School and Massachusetts Institute of Technology(MIT). Husain has furthermore developed the e-NACT solution as well as an online marking application. Husain was also invited to provide insight into South Africa's 4IR presidential commission, instituted by president Cyril Ramaphosa. Pre-academia Husain had taken product onto shelf at one of South Africa's major retail outlets. Close

Jurie Wessels

Jurie Wessels is a passionate academic that has been lecturing at the University of Johannesburg since 2009. Jurie has a heart for students and is the program coordinator for the BCom Accounting qualification. He also serves on the management team of the department. Jurie completed his Master's Degree in Taxation in 2014 and has since been involved in the supervision of master's dissertations in the field of taxation. When Jurie is not lecturing, he is a keen entrepreneur involved in two businesses that he co-owns with a partner.

Karabo Sihiya Kekana

Karabo Sihiya Kekana is a senior lecturer at the University of Johannesburg and a qualified Chartered Accountant CA(SA). She obtained her B.Comm Accounting degree cum laude at the University of Johannesburg in 2009 and her B.Comm Accounting (Hons) degree in 2010. She joined the University of Johannesburg in 2014 and lectures advanced accounting to the post- graduate students (CTA). She has been involved with the Gauteng Board Course since 2018 and holds a Master's Degree in International Accounting. She serves on the management committee at the University of Johannesburg and is involved in the JSE proactive monitoring process. In 2019 Karabo was a finalist in the SAICA top 35 under 35. Karabo is co-author of Group Statements Volume 1 and Volume 2. She is also a practicing business coach having obtained her coaching certificate at GIBBS. Close

Mariska McKenzie

Mariska is an energetic person with a passion for accounting, education, auditing, and financial management. She is an experienced Chartered Accountant, registered auditor, and SAICA registered assessor, who has made it her goal to empower as many people as possible. She is currently employed as a senior lecturer at the University of Johannesburg (UJ), where she lectures Financial Management and provides research supervision for MCom (International Accountancy) students. In addition, she conducts pre-issuance reviews for the Auditor-General (AGSA) and SNG Grant Thornton. She also serves as a member of SAICA's National Public Sector Committee as well as the CA2025 working group for SAICA trainees. She is also a member of the audit and risk committee of the South African Institute for Drug-Free Sport. Mariska obtained her MCom (Finance) degree cum laude from the UJ and is currently working on her PhD to develop turnaround strategies for municipalities in financial distress. Close

Michelle van Heerden

Michelle van Heerden obtained her B. Com Accounting (cum laude) with the Rand Afrikaans University in 1992. In 1993 she obtained her B. Com Accounting (Honours) also with the Rand Afrikaans University. After completing her articles with PricewaterhouseCoopers, she qualified as a Chartered Accountant in 1996. During October 1996 Michelle started specialising in tax by joining PricewaterhouseCooper's international tax division. In 1998 she obtained her M. Com South African and International Taxation degree with the Rand Afrikaans University. During her six years in the international tax division she managed major international clients, providing tax opinions for them on South African and International tax implications as well as writing articles for technical magazines. During this period, Michelle also presented numerous seminars locally and overseas as well as lectured Taxation for Tukkies Honours and Masters' students as well as WITS Masters' students. PricewaterhouseCoopers also sent Michelle on a three-month secondment to Rotterdam, The Netherlands. In July 2002, Michelle joined the Rand Afrikaans University (now the University of Johannesburg) and have been lecturing Taxation for the CTA students since then. She has also been involved with the Gauteng Board Course since 2002 and presents the annual tax update on the APT since 2015. Michelle was involved in the development of the original Competency Framework for SAICA and is currently also involved in developing the CA2025 Competency Framework for SAICA.

Mthobisi Malinga

By training, Mthobisi is a Chartered Accountant (CA), and spent three years in external audit at Deloitte before being a Technical IFRS Manager in the audit division of the firm, he then moved on to be an Assistant Director at City of Johannesburg (COJ) in Group Governance where he was a shareholder representative for the COJ (Johannesburg Social Housing Company, City Power, Johannesburg Water and Pikitup).

Prof Ahmed Haji

Prof Ahmed Haji has 17 years of post-article experience in financial reporting (IFRS and similar) and presenting financial reporting to the profession. Ahmed is Subject Head of Accounting and Deputy Head of the Department of Accountancy at the University of Johannesburg. He heads up a team of professional staff and presents Advanced Financial Accounting (IFRS) to the PGDA/Honours students at the University of Johannesburg. He also presents on the Gauteng Board Course and the APT APC course. He is an author of several publications, research papers and books, and makes regular presentations (professional, thought leadership and technical). He has participated in several academic accreditation reviews and international reciprocity reviews and evaluations. He is a CA(SA), having obtained his BCOM Accounting degree cum laude, his BCOM Accounting (Honours) degree cum laude, a Top 10 position in the SAICA qualifying exam and his MCom International Accounting degree cum laude. He was a member of the Council of UJ and currently a Senate member. He has held directorships and audit committee positions of listed companies and currently holds directorships in various education companies. He is the Chair of the Accounting Practices Committee of SAICA and has extensive financial reporting practical experience through various financial reporting review activities. He serves on various committees and sub-committees in SAICA.

Prof Alex van der Watt

Prof Alex van der Watt is a Professor of Practice at the University of Johannesburg (UJ) and an independent consultant to the South African Institute of Chartered Accountants (SAICA). He previously worked at UJ as an associate professor and Head of the Department of Accountancy. He is a Chartered Accountant and holds a Masters degree in Financial Management. He previously served as a member of the Main Board of the South African Institute of Chartered Accountants (SAICA) and also as a ministerial appointee to the Board of the Independent Regulatory Board for Auditors (IRBA). He also served on the Initial Professional Development Committee of SAICA and the Educational Committee of IRBA. Alex is deeply involved in the CA qualification process as Chair of the committee responsible for the SAICA Competency Framework. He is also responsible for the accreditation and monitoring of academic programmes and regularly presents at meetings of professional bodies in Africa. He has published several textbooks and peer-reviewed articles in academic journals. He is also a member of the Governing Board of the South African Journal of Accounting Research (SAJAR).

Prof Michael Wormald

Prof Michael Wormald is a Chartered Accountant who taught Management Accounting and Financial Management on the accredited Professional Accounting Programmes at the University of Cape Town for 38 years. During this period, he was appointed as the Head of the Department of Accounting for ten years and the Deputy Dean of Commerce (Operations) for eight years. He has also served as the Interim Dean of Commerce for extended periods. He has served on a number of SAICA committees both at a National and Regional level. In addition, he was elected to serve two terms as a member of the Main Board of the South African Institute of Chartered Accountants (SAICA). He is also a past Director of the Thuthuka Upliftment Fund. Michael has co-published a number of papers in academic journals and has twice been awarded the Standard Bank Prize for papers published in the South African Journal of Accounting Research. He has also presented papers at a number of local and overseas academic conferences. He was a founding member of the Cape Town Board Course and is a founding co-author of the textbook "Financial Management" which is widely used by both accounting and business finance academics in South Africa and Australia.

Prof Peter Bourne

Prof Peter Bourne completed his PGDA from UCT in 1974 as top of the Class with a Distinction in Financial Accounting. He did his articles with a KPMG predecessor firm and was admitted as a partner in 1977. He continued as a partner in KPMG until 1990 when he left the accounting profession to pursue an academic career at UCT. Whilst a partner in KPMG, he taught Auditing at the University of Port Elizabeth from 1986 to 1989 and joined UCT in 1990. He held the title of Head of the Auditing Section for most his time at UCT and retired as an Emeritus Associate Professor in 2013. He presented on the Cape Town Board Course from 1991 to 2013, has taught on APT since inception in 1999 and has thus been involved in teaching on accredited Professional Accounting Programmes for 33 years. Peter has extensive practical and commercial experience ranging from expert witness work to consulting on technical aspects and directly interacting with business and continues with this work concurrently with his active involvement in the APT Programme. Peter is also a co-author of "Dynamic Auditing".

Thabiso Madiba

Presenter - Public Sector Thabiso Madiba qualified as a Chartered Accountant in 2006 after completing his articles at Ernst & Young in the industrial products division. He was then seconded for 3 months in 2007 to Ernst & Young LLP in NYC where he was primarily focused on auditing hedge funds. In April 2007, moved to the University of Johannesburg where he lectures Finance 2 and Finance 3 to the Chartered Accounting stream undergraduate students. Thabiso also lectures the Thuthuka CA Board Course. In 2010, Thabiso graduated with an M.Com in International and South African Taxation from North West University. Thabiso has been involved in Public Sector Internal audit SLPs as well as presenting in public sector corporate governance SLPs. Thabiso is a registered Auditor and also a registered SAICA assessor. Thabiso was part of the CA2025 development committee. He was a marker for the ITC and the APC for a number of years. Thabiso is also on the boards of Sasol Khanyisa, Peermont Global East Free State, Nal'ibali and the Trevor Noah Foundation. He is the chairperson of the audit committee of Nal'ibali and is also on the audit committee of Sasol Khanyisa. Thabiso also consulted in VAT for ADCORP Group. Close

Vanessa van Dyk

Vanessa obtained her BRek in 2000 from the Stellenbosch University and her BCOm Hons and CTA in 2001 from Rand Afrikaans University (now the University of Johannesburg). She completed her articles in the Industrial and Automotive business unit at KPMG in 2004. She then served as an audit manager at the firm until she joined the University of Johannesburg as a senior lecturer in Auditing at the end of 2005. In 2007 she obtained her Master's in Computer Auditing (cum laude) from the University of Johannesburg. In 2012 she was appointed as the Deputy Head of the Accountancy Department at the University of Johannesburg, a position she still currently holds. Vanessa has been teaching Auditing on the Post Graduate Diploma in Accounting Sciences since 2006. Over her academic career she has regularly been involved in the marking and umpiring of the Initial Test of Competence and Assessment of Professional Competence assessments at SAICA. Close

Veryl Mulder

Veryl completed her articles at Deloitte and started her career as an audit manager in the manufacturing sector. She has 6+ years of banking experience. She joined Standard Bank as part of the Group IFRS technical team and moved to the Treasury and Capital Management team where she was responsible for managing capital, funding and liquidity requirements for Business and Commercial Clients. She is currently part of the Strategic Investments and Alliances team and is acting as a hands-on equity investor with a wide portfolio of investee firms. This involves assisting with the portfolio's day-to-day operations as well as participating on the boards. She enjoys getting involved in the financial reporting of the portfolio companies and measuring and monitoring the performance of the portfolio. Veryl completed her Bcom Accounting Honours at the University of Johannesburg and is a qualified CA(SA). She is also a CFA charter holder. Veryl is also actively involved in setting the ITC exam and is part of the financial reporting team. She is passionate about people and is currently working on a project with fellow CA(SA) members to assist candidates on their lifelong learning journey to becoming trailblazers and business leaders in this very exciting and every evolving profession. Yusuf Ebrahim

Yusuf Ebrahim is a Senior lecturer in the Department of Accountancy at the University of Johannesburg since 2017. He obtained his B Comm Acc degree at the University of Johannesburg in 2008, and his B Comm Acc Hons degree at the University of Johannesburg in 2009. He completed his traineeship through EY, gaining experience in Industrial Products and Telecommunications. He qualified as a Chartered Accountant CA(SA) in 2012 and remained in the managerial role thereafter. He was also involved in graduate activities at EY such as the modifying of and presenting in the Business Experience Programs held at EY. He then moved on to Multichoice Africa for 2 years, working as a Corporate Accountant, before taking up the Senior Lecturer role at the University of Johannesburg. He is currently completing his Master's Degree in Finance at the University of Johannesburg. Yusuf has years of experience in marking SAICA APC exams as well as assisting with the technical invigilation for the APC exams.
