Christine Badger

Christine Badger is part of the original merger of the Badger & Sumrall firms. In her position as Accountant she works primarily with small businesses & not-for-profit organizations, focusing on internal accounting system set-up, local and state compliance reporting and payroll processing. She has more than 25 years of experience and takes a hands-on approach to accounting and client interaction. Her specialties in addition to general accounting and tax preparation include QuickBooks training and monitoring client on-site systems through remote access.

Kevin Underwood

Kevin specializes in individual and business taxation as well as Fortune 500 consulting engagements. He is a graduate of James Madison University earning Bachelor's degree in Accounting and Computer Information Systems. He has been automating the accounting and financial functions of Fortune 500 companies since 1998 and became a licensed CPA in 2001. Kevin has a passion for helping individuals and business entities make smart financial decisions. In his spare time, he enjoys outdoor water sports and giving back to the community through various charities.

Linda Sumrall

Linda Sumrall was born in eastern Pennsylvania and attended schools there until college in Greenville, South Carolina. Here she obtained a bachelors degree in elementary education. In 1991 she married Shawn and they started their life together in Fairfax Virginia. Linda worked at a temp agency in the summers while teaching 6th grade at Fairfax Baptist Temple. She was a receptionist at Sun Micro Systems in Tysons Corner before moving to Gainesville to start a family. After moving to Fauquier county, she taught fourth and second grades at Fresta Valley Christian School. She and Shawn have three grown boys and one grandson, born September 2020. She is happy to be in an administrative role at Badger Sumrall starting this year.

PATTI HEMPEL

Patti Hempel joined Badger, Sumrall & Co. in 2010 following more than 25 years in the hospitality and customer service industry. In her position as office administrator and a tax services specialist, she excels at helping clients navigate the entire tax-filing process from beginning to end, with a specialty in cloud-based systems that help clients move to paperless. She also excels at keeping day-to-day operations running smoothly. A collector of cat figurines, avid noodler and dream-catcher maker, Patti attended the University of Maryland, College Park.

Samuel Potter

Sam Potter is tax manager for individual and estate taxation at Badger Sumrall, managing our firm's return preparation process and performing technical review for individual and estate income tax returns. He also has extensive experience with not-for-profit and exempt organization information returns. In addition to general tax compliance, Sam is heavily involved in income tax planning and strategy and oversees Badger Sumrall's trust and estate accounting services. Sam became licensed as a CPA in 2016 and received his Master's in Business Administration from Thomas Edison State University in 2017. Samuel Potter is a staff accountant with Badger Sumrall & Co. Sam has primary responsibility for individual tax return reviews, and business and non-profit return preparation. He also has extensive experience in accounting and auditing for non-profits. Sam received his CPA license in 2016 and completed his MBA in 2017.

SHAWN SUMRALL - Founder

Shawn, a co-founder of Badger, Sumrall & Co., joined the firm 2004 when combining his independent practice with current partner Richard Badger. Shawn's career began as a staff accountant for a local church and he has carried his passion for non-profit accounting and ministry to his own practice. He currently works with small businesses, non-profit associations and individuals to plan, strategize and execute various financial and management decisions. Previously Shawn worked for small, independent firms in the Northern Virginia region. Shawn is a licensed CPA in Virginia and a member of both the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the Virginia Society of Certified Public Accountants. Shawn is a graduate of Bob Jones University in Greenville, South Carolina, earning a Bachelor's degree in Accounting in 1990. His interests include sports with his three boys and teaching English as a second language in Slovakia.

Vanessa Beale

Vanessa graduated with a bachelor's degree in Accounting from James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Virginia, just prior to starting with Badger, Sumrall & Company in 2015 and became a licensed CPA a few years later. She is the business taxation, bookkeeping and payroll manager and is involved with personal taxation preparation and planning. She also has experience with assurance engagements, specifically for small businesses and non-profit organizations. Vanessa Beale is a staff accountant at Badger, Sumrall & Co. She is responsible for bookkeeping, and both individual and business tax return preparation. She also prepares quarterly payroll tax returns and has had auditing experience as well…

Wesley Pitcher

Wesley Pitcher joined Badger, Sumrall & Co. in November 2021. He graduated from Pensacola Christian College in 2018 with Bachelor's degrees in Accounting and Finance, and received his CPA license in 2020. His responsibilities include tax return preparation, bookkeeping, and payroll services.

Zoe Freeman

Zoe joined our team four years ago after graduating with a degree in accounting from Liberty University. Upon graduating she passed the CPA exam and is currently a licensed CPA. Since joining our team, we have failed to add poor Zoe to the Team page on our website. While she maintains she is not bitter about being ignored, we know better. And now, Zoe will be leaving our firm in February of 2023. Zoe, we love you and you will be missed.
