After earning a journalism degree and working in government communications, I decided to become a psychotherapist. I moved from Ontario to Nova Scotia where I earned my Master's of Arts in Educational Psychology from Dalhousie University (1995), with a focus on family dynamics, trauma, and effecting social change through therapeutic work. I was studying at Harvard University in their doctorate of Education program, and then decided to return to Canada to set up a private practice and to move into community-based therapy settings and work with people instead of reading and writing about them.
