All to often, as a company makes the leap from a small company to a mid-sized company, it finds the technology that was the company's lifeline has somehow become restrictive and brittle. The company becomes unable to win the competitive advantage as it becomes apparent that it has become mired in proprietary technology that was designed to lock the company into the vendors business model.
