A graduate of Lawrence University, Alex joins OMD with over a decade of experience in educational + workforce leadership and innovative programming, working across K-12 school districts, postsecondary institutions, and education technology companies. He has designed products and programs that not only enhance student outcomes but also provide practical solutions to organizational and systemic challenges within the education sector. His commitment to serving under-resourced communities reflects a passion for promoting equitable access to quality education and creating sustainable career pathways.

Prior to this role, Alvin worked as OMD's Human Resources and Operations Intern and Front Desk Associate at Wilbur Wright College. Also an OMD Alum, Alvin graduated with his associate degree from Wilbur Wright College and is on his way to completing his bachelor's degree in Human Resources Development from Northeastern Illinois this December. As an avid Chicago sports fan, Alvin looks to cheer on his home teams and is looking forward to supporting the OMD community.

Andrea leads One Million Degrees' fundraising initiatives and internal and external communications, working with funding partners and various stakeholders to support the organization's expanding reach and impact. Andrea joined OMD in 2015 as Development Manager and has taken on increasing levels of responsibility driving grant writing and reporting, event management, portfolio management, and communications oversight. Prior to joining OMD, Andrea served as marketing communications manager and Education Pioneers Fellow for Chicago Lawndale AMACHI Mentoring Program and previously held roles in B2B marketing, digital consulting, and client support. Andrea holds a bachelor's degree in marketing from Hampton University and a master's degree in integrated marketing communications from Northwestern University.

Andrew Beideman

Andy joined the Foundation as a Program Officer in 2018, and led design and launch of the Chicago Prize, a $45 million commitment to support impactful community-led development activities on the city's south and west sides. Aneesh is the child of immigrants and was compelled to begin his career in education because of the meaningful role access to educational opportunity played in his family's life. He started as a high school English teacher. It was his experience working with his students that brought to life for Aneesh the limitless potential of students and the need to ensure all students had access to opportunities to meet their potential. Since leaving the classroom, Aneesh worked in the public and non-profit sector supporting education reform efforts at a city and state level. This includes his time at the Tennessee Department of Education where he played a major role in the design and implementation of the state's transformative teacher evaluation system and at TNTP (formerly The New Teacher Project), where he supported human capital and academic reform efforts in Camden, NJ and Boston, MA. Most recently, Aneesh served as the Executive Director for Teach For America in Greater Chicago and Northwest Indiana for nearly six years. Aneesh was previously named to Forbes 30 under 30 for education, is a 2019 Leadership Greater Chicago Fellow, a member of The Economic Club of Chicago, and serves on the board of Teach For India - U.S.

Ashley Barksdale

Before joining OMD, Ashley served in various roles, including the Supportive Housing Intern at Family Rescue, the Learning and Innovation Intern at New Moms, the Teen Parenting Service Network (TPSN) Intake Specialist at UCAN, the Teen Parent Educator at Communities In Schools of Central Texas and an Admission Counselor at Huston-Tillotson University. Her passion for serving the community extends beyond her professional life, as she actively volunteered and initiated meaningful projects like the Teen Pregnancy Ministry at Greater Mt. Zion Baptist Church, being the Client Advocate at the Heart of Texas Pregnancy Resource Center, and co-founding the Spelman Association for Maternal Support, a student organization that supports student-mothers. Breanna Harrell

Breanna Harrell serves as a Program Coordinator at Malcolm X College. She graduated from the College of Wooster in 2021. Breanna received a Bachelor of Arts in Communication, Sciences, and Disorders with a minor in Education. During her time in college, she was a President of Women of Images, an organization for women of color, which aimed to create a safe space for women of color on campus to have a voice and build relationships through their experience. She also became a Co-Founder for the Black Student Equity Fund (BSEF) at her alma mater, which is a fund geared towards providing students with opportunities and support both in and out of the classroom with financial necessities. After College, Breanna went on to complete a trade school for Digital Media Production at Illinois Media School to explore other passions. Breanna aims to make a difference in scholars' education by providing them the resources necessary to help them navigate through their journey. She has also spent 5 years working closely with pre-k through third grade students at 2 different elementary schools and 4 years educating students with exceptionalities in clinical practices at the Freelander Speech and Hearing Clinic in Ohio. Breanna is excited to work in her hometown, Chicago, to serve college scholars by building relationships, providing resources, strategizing and creating ideas that best support them in order to benefit their achievements throughout their college journey. A fun fact about Breanna is that she played eight years of rugby (4years in high school + 4 years in college) winning three Noble Network championships, and two state championships (Illinois and Ohio).

Daniela Clark

Daniela serves as a Senior Data and Technology Specialist as part of the operations team. She works across OMD's teams to provide reports and data collection. Previously, she worked in the department of Social Work at Loyola University Chicago as a staff member by providing her knowledge for website maintenance and course platform support as well as Spanish translations, thus gaining experience in higher education. Daniela graduated from Berry College with a Bachelor's degree in Business Marketing and Management and she is expected to complete her Master of Science in Information Systems and Analytics in 2021.

DANIELLE MCCONNELL

Leading OMD's campus-based team, Danielle works to ensure the OMD Program is successfully executed and supported across OMD's 10 campus partner sites. Danielle joined One Million Degrees five years ago as a Program Coordinator, working directly with students at Harold Washington, Malcolm X, Daley and Truman College, prior to being promoted to Program Manager two years ago. In that role, she led a team of three campus Program Coordinators teams serving scholars across the Chicago region. Prior to One Million Degrees, Danielle worked with City Year Chicago, a nonprofit organization, supporting "freshmen on track" efforts and providing socio-emotional coaching for high school students in Chicago. She received a bachelor's degree in developmental psychology from the University of Michigan with a separate concentration in Gender & Health.

David Scherer - Chairman, Founder

David is principal of Origin, co-chairs the Investment Committee, and oversees investment analysis, acquisition and asset management. He has more than 20 years of experience in real estate investing, finance, and asset management and believes that real estate is the best asset class for long-term wealth protection and growth. As a child of two teachers, David witnessed the daily challenges facing middle-income families. David received 100% financial aid from Harvard and played on the Harvard varsity football team, where he learned the value of team building and goal setting. Upon graduation, David spent eight years at a privately financed hedge fund, where he opened and managed offices in New York and London and served as company president. His success in this role allowed him to focus on his passion: real estate. David earned his MBA from the University of Chicago to explore the intersection of real estate, financial modeling, and investment structures. David has dedicated much of his time towards giving back to others. In 2006, he co-founded One Million Degrees, which has raised $20 million to help low-income community college students graduate and successfully enter the workforce. He has served as the organization's Board Chair for the past 12 years, as the organization has grown from 30 to 1,000 students served per year. He also serves as the President of the Harvard Club of Chicago and is on the Advisory Board of Invest for Kids. David is married, has two children, and is a youth basketball coach. David is a passionate but below-average guitar player and is currently learning Spanish.

Dean Bailey

Dean has extensive civic sector experience, starting his career as a social services case worker and most recently as Furman University's Assistant Director of Bridges to a Brighter Future, a college access and success program, where he managed programming, grants, data, strategic planning, and volunteer and donor relations. Dr. Constance Mixon

Dr. Constance Mixon is a founding board member of One Million Degrees. At Elmhurst College, she is the Interim Vice President of Academic Affairs and Dean of the Faculty. She is also an Associate Professor of Political Science and Director of the Urban Studies Program. Prior to joining Elmhurst College in the spring of 2010, she taught Political and Social Sciences at the City Colleges of Chicago (CCC) for over eleven years. While at CCC, she served as Dean of Instruction in addition to various other administrative assignments. In 2001, Dr. Mixon was nominated by her students, and named the Illinois Professor of the Year by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. Dr. Mixon is the author of several journal articles, book chapters, and is the co-editor of Twenty-First Century Chicago, which investigates the social, economic, political, and governmental challenges facing Chicago. Dr. Mixon frequently provides political commentary and analysis for local, national, and international media outlets.

Elizabeth Nuttall

In September of 2022 Elizabeth (She/Her) transitioned from a temp role at OMD into a Development Specialist position where she assists in grant writing, salesforce management, donor cultivation, and event planning while serving as the liaison to the Associate Board. Her prior volunteer experience includes a vast array of grassroots fundraising, volunteer coordination, marketing, and direct service. Elizabeth is passionate about advancing organizational reciprocity, meaningful personal impact, and community development. Elizabeth holds a BA in Anthropology from the University of Texas at Austin and is currently working toward a MA in Nonprofit Management at Johns Hopkins University.

Elvert Howard

Elvert plays a critical intermediary role between college, employer, and student, and provide direct coaching and support to multiple cohorts of students who are also fulltime employees. Prior to OMD, Elvert worked as an instructor at Harold Washington and Olive Harvey Colleges in the business departments. Before that, he worked in advertising at numerous agencies in Chicago and St. Louis. Elvert is well versed in the AON apprenticeship program as he has taught various cohorts while at City Colleges of Chicago over the years. Originally from St. Louis, Elvert received his bachelor's and master's degrees from UC Berkeley and UC Irvine respectively. When time permits, Elvert enjoys fishing, traveling, live theatre, dining out and perfecting my culinary skills.

Emely Hernandez

As a first-generation scholar, Emely moved to Chicago from Southern California to complete her undergraduate degree at Dominican University with a bachelor's degree in Sociology and a minor in Latin American studies. Her work background with many nonprofits, and her professional journey continue to bring her passion for community service to life. In her previous roles as a volunteer coordinator, Emely took the lead in recruiting, hiring, and onboarding new volunteers and interns. Additionally, her work focused on operational and volunteer management which involved overseeing the construction of schools and homes in Tijuana, Mexico, a hands-on experience that fueled her commitment to making a positive impact in communities. Emely is excited to bring her previous experiences working in volunteer engagement and support the mission of OMD.

Erika Ehmann

Erika's background is in social work and has worked in private practice, medical, and school social work settings. She earned her bachelor's degree in political science and urban Studies from Elmhurst College and went onto earn her master's degree in social work from Florida Gulf Coast University. Outside of work, Erika enjoys traveling, hanging out with family and friends, and attending comedy shows. Erika serves as the Manager of Workforce and Corporate Partnerships. Previous to this role, she worked with participants in an earn and learn program, as well as connect our signature scholars and alumni with job and internship opportunities. Erika's background is in social work and has worked in school and medical social work and in private practice. She earned her bachelor's degree in Political Science and Urban Studies with a minor in Criminal Justice from Elmhurst College and went on to graduate with her master's degree in Social Work from Florida Gulf Coast University.

Esmeralda Rodriguez

Esmeralda serves as the Director of the Young Women of Color Program. In partnership with JPMorgan Chase and The Fellowship Initiative, this program supports self-identified women of color attending Chicago community colleges by providing programming that addresses the realities that women of color encounter when navigating school, work, and life. Esmeralda joined OMD with a decade-long experience as a teacher and education researcher. Her work has primarily focused on curriculum design, anti-racist education, supporting racially and linguistically diverse students, and Chicana feminist pedagogies. She previously served as OMD's Manager of Curriculum and Training. She has a bachelor's degree in Mexican American Studies from the University of Texas at Austin, master's degree in Culture, Curriculum, and Change and a PhD in Cultural Studies and Literacies from the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill.

Evette Simon-Williams

Francesca Walker

Before joining One Million Degrees, Grace served as the Manager of Strategic Alignment for Global Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion at McDonald's Corporation. Further enriching her background, she held roles at the University of Pittsburgh, Homewood Children's Village, and the University of Malaysia Perlis. Grace holds a Bachelor's degree in Urban Policy with a focus on education and community development from the College of William & Mary, and a Master's degree in Public Policy from the Harris School at the University of Chicago, where she was an Obama Foundation Scholar. Harold Daniels III serves as a Program Coordinator at Olive-Harvey College. Born and raised in Jersey City, NJ, he graduated from New Jersey City University in 2019; receiving a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Political Science with a minor in African/African-American Studies. While in undergrad, Harold presided over many organizations including the Black Freedom Society, which discussed current events surrounding people of color in the world and on campus; as well as being a support system for its members. Jesenia serves as the Program Coordinator for Richard J. Daley College. Jesenia was born and raised on the south side of Chicago and graduated from the University of Illinois at Chicago with a Bachelors in Sociology. She is an alumni of Chicago Public Schools, and a first generation high school and college graduate. Prior to OMD, Jesenia worked at Dr. Pedro Albizu Campos High School as a Mentor, where she spent time building relationships with students and supporting them through their journey of setting and accomplishing personal and academic goals. In addition to her work in education, she has helped raise funds for supportive services around domestic violence as a council member for Mujeres Latinas en Acción. Beginning in 2020, she has been able to educate students and her surrounding communities about resources available to undocumented persons and families as a community navigator for Northern Illinois Justice for Our Neighbors. This past summer she joined the Young Women's Giving Council as a participant in the grant making process for recipients whose work revolves around advocacy and social change in Chicago. Her passion in life is to work alongside and support communities as they take action in working towards their success. She is happy to continue that work with scholars at One Million Degrees.
