Carl T. Hartman

Carl Hartman, M.D., F.A.C.S. (known as "Dr. Carl") joined his father, Dr. Ronald Hartman, and Dr. Larry Pasquali in practice in 1990. Over the past 30 years he has established himself as one of California's leading authorities on refractive and cataract surgery and has continued to build SoCal Eye into one of the most respected Ophthalmology practices in the United States. His staunch commitment to delivering the highest level of patient care is central to the practice's success and he believes that there is no better compliment than a referral from a former patient. Dr. Carl grew up locally and is a graduate of Lakewood High School. He attended the University of Southern California and received his Doctor of Medicine from Chicago Medical School. Dr Hartman completed his internship and residency in Ophthalmology at the University of California, Irvine. He later joined the University's clinical staff and also became a clinical professor of Ophthalmology teaching ophthalmologic surgery and neuro-ophthalmology to other physicians, and actively proctors newly trained surgeons. This is a role that he maintains today and is a source of great pride in supporting a new generation of Ophthalmologists. Dr. Carl Hartman is board certified as a Diplomate of the American Board of Ophthalmology, a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (F.A.C.S), a Fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology with specialization in refractive and cataract surgery. Dr Carl has performed LASIK, PRK and Cataract surgeries on many thousands of patients, including many fellow physicians, surgeons, community leaders, and family members (including his wife and brother). He is certified in laser vision correction technology that includes LASIK, PRK, PRKa, PTK, RK, AK, clear corneal sutureless lensectomy, and corneal transplantation, as well as the latest accommodating, multifocal and toric intraocular lenses. He is also certified in the newest WaveFront and Femtosecond laser vision correction procedures. Dr. Hartman has been named a "Physician of Excellence" by the Orange County Medical Association for many consecutive years, "Best Ophthalmologist" by the Long Beach Press Telegraph Reader's Choice Survey, Teacher of the Year at UC Irvine, a "Top Physician" by US News and World Report , and one of "Southern California's Best Physicians" by peers. Dr John Ling

John Ling, M.D. is a board-certified fellowship-trained glaucoma specialist and comprehensive ophthalmologist. Dr. Ling earned his Bachelors of Engineering in Biomedical Engineering at the prestigious Vanderbilt University in Nashville, TN before going on to earn a masters from Boston University. After obtaining his medical degree from Indiana University, Dr. Ling went on to do his internship in internal medicine at UC Irvine and then his comprehensive ophthalmology training at the University of Texas Medical Branch. During residency Dr.Ling trained at the world renowned Houston Methodist Hospital and M.D. Anderson Cancer Center focusing on neuro-ophthalmology and ocular oncology. After residency Dr. Ling returned to UC Irvine to complete his glaucoma fellowship at the highly regarded Gavin Herbert Eye Institute under the mentorship of Drs. Sameh Mosaed M.D. , Anand Bhatt M.D., and Ken Lin M.D.. At SoCal eye Dr. Ling performs cataract surgery and a wide range of minimally invasive glaucoma procedures (MIGS) including Xen Gel Stent, iStent, Kahook Dual Blade, Trabectome, and iTrack as well as trabeculectomy and glaucoma drainage devices. Dr. Ling has been active in medical research since his undergraduate years at Vanderbilt where he helped publish multiple manuscripts in cardiology, since that time he has continued to have been published in many well esteemed ophthalmology journals and presented his work at numerous national meetings. Dr. Ted A. Pasquali

Since Joining SoCal Eye in 2013, Dr. Ted A. Pasquali is devoted to providing excellent and personalized patient care in all areas of ophthalmology. After receiving his undergraduate degree from Princeton University and his medical degree at UCLA's David Geffen School of Medicine, Dr. Theodore Pasquali completed his internship in medicine at Banner Good Samaritan Hospital in Phoenix, Arizona, his residency in ophthalmology at Cole Eye Institute at the Cleveland Clinic, and a fellowship in refractive surgery at Durrie Vision in Overland Park, Kansas. He is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO), the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, and the International Society of Refractive Surgery. Dr. Theodore Pasquali enjoys participating in research and has published papers in the Journal of Refractive Surgery and the Journal of Cataract and Refractive Surgery.

Emma L. Clay

Emma Clay, M.D. F.A.C.S. joined SoCal Eye in 2006. She brings strong and broad Ophthalmology expertise, a passion for perfection and unparalleled dedication to the delivery of the highest level of patient care. She joined the practice from the prestigious Jules Stein Eye Institute at UCLA where she completed her Ophthalmology Residency. Dr. Clay is a graduate of Occidental College and Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania where she was inducted into the distinguished medical honor society Alpha Omega Alpha. Since joining SoCal Eye, she has been appointed a fellow in the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the American College of Surgeons, and a diplomate of the American Board of Ophthalmology. For the last 15 years, Dr. Emma Clay has been actively involved in providing broad general ophthalmology care and performing a full spectrum of cataract and refractive surgery. Her expertise in cutting edge cataract surgery, and implantation of monofocal, toric, accommodating, and multifocal intraocular lens implants provides our patients with many vision-correcting options. For patients interested in laser vision correction, Dr. Emma Clay is certified in numerous refractive procedures, including LASIK, PRK, PTK, and clear corneal lens exchange. Dr. Clay also has a special interest in facial rejuvenation, and performs upper and lower lid blepharoplasties, in addition to antiaging treatments include Botox, Dysport, and Restylane injections. Dr. Emma Clay believes in being an active member of her community and lectures to numerous local and retirement groups. In her spare time she is an active Mom to an energetic family and in between is an avid runner and cyclist.

Kate Xie

Kate Xie, M.D., joined SoCal Eye in 2022. Dr. Xie grew up in Orange County, where she graduated as valedictorian from Troy High School in Fullerton. She then graduated cum laude from Harvard University with a degree in Neurobiology and Mind, Brain, and Behavior. She earned her medical degree and completed her Ophthalmology residency at University of California, Irvine, where she served as Chief Resident in her final year. She then completed a rigorous fellowship in cornea, refractive and anterior segment surgery at Baylor College of Medicine. Dr. Xie is passionate about achieving great outcomes in cataract and corneal surgery and staying at the forefront of technology. Dr. Xie is trained in refractive cataract surgery, complex cataract surgery, intraocular lens exchange, secondary intraocular lens implantation, LASIK, PRK, and corneal transplantation (DMEK, DSEK, and PKP). She additionally specializes in the medical management of ocular surface and corneal disease. She is highly invested in providing her patients with the best vision they can achieve. Dr. Xie feels so privileged to return to Southern California to serve the community she grew up in. She is married to a pediatrician and spends her free time chasing after their toddler son. Her hobbies include DIY household projects, trying new foods, and photography.

Larry A. Pasquali

Dr. Larry Pasquali joined Dr. Ronald Hartman in practice in 1978 and has dedicated over 40 years of practice to the Lakewood/Long Beach area. As a graduate of M.I.T and U.C.L.A. School of Medicine, Dr. Pasquali is a board-certified ophthalmologist and a Fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the American College of Surgeons who specializes in anterior segment and small incision surgery. Dr. Pasquali was one of the early adopters of phacoemulsification for cataract surgery and helped bring this modern technology to the Lakewood area. Outside of SoCal Eye, Dr. Pasquali is an accomplished professor, who has served as a clinical and surgical instructor for the University of California, Irvine Ophthalmology residents at the Long Beach VA Hospital. Dr Pasquali has also served as an expert in ophthalmology for a number of legal proceedings. He has provided 40 years of eye care services to our nation's veteran's, receiving an Award of Recognition from the Long Beach Veteran's Hospital for his years of service."

Ronald H. Hartman

Dr. Ronald Hartman founded Southern California Eye Physicians & Associates in 1964, known at that time as Lakewood Eye Physicians and Surgeons. Ronald Hartman, M.D. is a full clinical professor at University of California, Irvine and considered one of the most experienced ophthalmologists practicing in the United States.

Trinh Nhu, M.D., F.A.C.S, joined SoCal Eye in 1997, with the opening of their second office in Los Alamitos. Dr. Nhu is a Diplomate of the American Board of Ophthalmology, a Fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, a fellow of the American College of Surgeons, and a member of Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society. Dr. Trinh Nhu is also a professor of ophthalmology at the University of California Irvine, School of Medicine. As a board-certified ophthalmologist for over seventeen years, Dr. Trinh Nhu has extensive experience treating all eye diseases. In addition to performing cataract surgery with the latest accommodating, multifocal, and toric intraocular lenses, she also performs clear lensectomy, glaucoma, pterygium, eyelid cancer removal and reconstruction, as well as blepharoplasty. Most important of all, Dr. Trinh Nhu is committed to providing her patients with exceptional eye care.
