I grew up in Ipswich and did my medical degree in Sheffield (MB ChB with Honours, 1990). My basic surgical training was in Nottingham and Derby, and I passed my FRCS exam in 1995. I spent 18 months in full time research at Nottingham University, looking at the long term effects of fractures of the tibia. Based on this research, I wrote a thesis that led to the award of a Doctorate of Medicine degree in 2002...
My specialist orthopaedic surgical training was on the mid-Trent orthopaedic training scheme in Nottingham, Derby and Mansfield, and I passed my FRCS (Tr & Orth) specialist exam in 2002. To broaden my experience and develop my special interest in foot & ankle surgery, I spent 2003 working as a senior orthopaedic fellow at Dunedin Public Hospital in New Zealand. I was appointed as a consultant trauma and orthopaedic surgeon at Derby Royal Infirmary in 2004.
