Bert Johnson (B.A. Carleton College, 1994; Ph.D. Harvard University, 2003) has taught American politics at Middlebury since 2004. His research and teaching interests include campaign finance, federalism, and state and local politics. Johnson is author of Political Giving: Making Sense of Individual Campaign Contributions (Boulder: FirstForum Press, 2013), and coauthor (with Morris Fiorina, Paul E. Peterson, and William Mayer) of The New American Democracy (Longman, 2011). His articles have appeared in Social Science History, Urban Affairs Review, and American Politics Research. Dan joined the Middlebury Advancement team in July of 2022. As Vice President for Advancement, he is responsible for managing and motivating the team that oversees all aspects of Middlebury's external relations, fundraising and campaign-related outreach work to alumni, parents, and friends of the College.
From 2004 to 2022, he served as Chief Development Officer at Choate Rosemary Hall in Wallingford, Connecticut. Prior to this, he was Associate Director of Development at St. Paul's School in Concord, New Hampshire and Director of Major Gifts and Planned Giving at The Hotchkiss School in Lakeville, Connecticut. Dan is no stranger to Vermont; he began his career in advancement at the University of Vermont as a major gifts officer and development liaison to student life and university athletics. He spent his first years after college with Teach for America and worked for Securities Industry Daily in New York before moving into educational advancement.
A proud Choate-Bowdoin-Wesleyan alum, he lives in Barnard, Vermont, with his spouse and high-school-aged son. Dan and his wife are also parents of two recent college graduates: one from UVM and the other from College of the Holy Cross.

Jason Lamb, Coordinator of the Bread Loaf Writers' Conferences, taught middle school English for several years, before recruiting emerging and established writers for the MFA in Writing program at Vermont College of Fine Arts. He writes short fiction, and spends any free time he has hiking in the mountains. Jason recently summited all forty-eight mountains over four thousand feet in New Hampshire and is currently working on finishing the remaining New England mountains, with occasional trips to the Cascade Range in Washington state.

Jennifer Grotz, Director of the Bread Loaf Writers' Conferences, is the author of three books of poetry: Cusp, The Needle, and most recently, Window Left Open. Also a translator, her Psalms of All My Days, translations from the French poet Patrice de La Tour du Pin, appeared in 2014. Rochester Knockings, by the Tunisian novelist Hubert Haddad, appeared in 2015. With the poet and translator Piotr Sommer, she has recently co-translated from the Polish Everything I Don't Know, the selected poems of Jerzy Ficowski, forthcoming from World Poetry Books. A recipient of fellowships from the National Endowment of the Arts, the Guggenheim Foundation, the Camargo Foundation, and the Rona Jaffe Foundation, she teaches poetry and translation at the University of Rochester.

Lauren Francis-Sharma, Assistant Director of the Bread Loaf Writers' Conference, is the author of Book of the Little Axe and ‘Til the Well Runs Dry, awarded the Honor Fiction Prize by the Black Caucus of the American Library Association. Lauren is a contributor to Marita Golden's anthology, Us Against Alzheimer's, and her more recent work can be found at ElectricLit.com, Barrelhouse.com and The Lily. She holds a bachelor's degree in English Literature from the University of Pennsylvania and a J.D. from the University of Michigan Law School. A former corporate lawyer, Lauren is a MacDowell Fellow, the former owner of D.C. Writers Room, and is currently working on her third novel to be published by Grove/Atlantic.

Megan Mayhew Bergman, Director of the Bread Loaf Environmental Writers' Conference, currently teaches undergraduates at Middlebury College. She's also an environmental columnist for The Guardian, the author of two books, and a Senior Fellow at the Conservation Law Foundation in Boston. Previously, she served as the Associate Director of Bennington's MFA Program and completed a fellowship at the American Library in Paris. Her work has been featured in the New Yorker, New York Times, Paris Review, NPR's Selected Shorts, McSweeney's, Ploughshares, Oxford American, and Best American Short Stories in 2011 and 2015.
