EXETER BOOKBINDERS - Key Persons

Chaim Ebanks

Chaim Ebanks and Eric Gray have a combined experience of over 100 years between them. You can be confident your precious books will be in safe hands. Chaim says that "bookbinding gives us both pleasure and great satisfaction". That love and care translates into finished work that you will enjoy for many years. Chaim Ebanks fell in love with books as a very small child, reading two or three books every week. Inquisitive as to the structure of books, he had rudimentary training, which allowed him to bind his own small books. As an adult, and running his own IT business, he took 'day release' to expand his knowledge, with tuition from the internationally known Dutch bookbinder, George Janssen. After years of tuition, he proved to be an outstanding student, producing good quality work in both binding and 'finishing' of books (the application of gold lettering and design). Chaim specialises in the repair and rebinding of old volumes, though he will also accept modern commissions. Chaim has lectured at Exeter University on the subject "The History of the Codex System of Books and Early Writing Systems".
