While doing research on the history of this location, we discovered not only the story of Elana Gallegos and her connection to this property, we also came across images of her signature and brand from the Spanish Archives of New Mexico. In a letter dated Sept. 23,1712, Elana petitioned the govenor to request a cattle brand for her cows and horses. She was the first female rancher to be granted that privilage. We had already chosen the name La Hacienda de la Luna, in english: Ranch house of the Moon, for the name of our facility. Seeing the image of the moon in the cattle brand Elana had used inspired us to incorporate her design into our logo.
