Ai production(indigo production) had been common around Shiso city and Banshu area since early era. Lord Hachisuka who governed Awa Tokushima area in Shikoku encouraged the production of Ai in Edo period. "Awa Ai" had thrived and become very famous. On the other hand, in Banshu area Ai production had been declining, leaveing in each town few factories called Koya (indigo factories) which had remained till the beginning of 1930's.
