Jean (she/her/hers) joined CAPS in December of 2023, after working for nearly 25 years in a variety of mental health and human services settings, including a hospital outpatient mental health clinic, community mental health, addictions treatment, and private practice. She has lived in Bloomington since 1992, and earned her Master in Social Work degree from IUPUI in 2000. Jean is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, as well as a Certified Brain Injury Specialist. Her practice specialties include working with the LGBTQ+ community and people who have experienced a brain injury or concussion. In her work with clients, she uses a strengths-based, person-centered, and motivational interviewing approach and draws heavily from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Existential Psychotherapy. Whatever the techniques employed, Jean believes that the main factor for creating change and helping clients achieve their goals lies in developing a solid collaborative relationship between therapist and client grounded in respect.
Jean's practice extends beyond the psychotherapy office, as she believes that we cannot just work with our individual clients without also working to create a world grounded in social justice, safety, and inclusivity of all people in their diversity of identities and socioeconomic status. She has done this through several advocacy groups, running for Bloomington City Council, volunteering in political campaigns, and serving on several boards and commissions including her current service on the board of directors for a local non-profit serving people experiencing homelessness and extreme poverty.
In her free time, Jean loves to spend time with her partner, play with her granddaughter, hike, camp, birdwatch, kayak, read, and take care of their four cats who rule the household.
