Abigail Kappelman

Abby is a graduate student at Michigan currently pursuing a PhD in epidemiology at the School of Public Health under Dr. Nancy Fleischer and the Health Equity, Law, and Policy in Epidemiologic Research (HELPER) team. Her dissertation work focuses on intergenerational risk factors and social mobility in health outcomes. On main campus, she is also a research fellow with the Center for Social Epidemiology and Public Health (CSEPH) and the Stone Center for Inequality Dynamics (CID). Abby plans to apply into general surgery after returning to medical school and pursue a research career investigating cycles of health inequality. Prior to medical school, she earned an MA in Economics at The University of Alabama. Since moving to Michigan, she has have walked over 50 dogs in Ann Arbor as a side job!

Alexandra Luby

Dr. Luby is a plastic surgery resident at the University of Michigan. Originally from Ohio, she earned a Bachelors in Chemical Engineering from University of Dayton in 2014. She then continued onto graduate school , where she performed translational science research focused on applications of nanomaterials for targeted cell delivery and earned a Masters in Bioengineering from University of Dayton in 2015. With the goal to care for patients as a physician, she continued onto medical school at the University of Toledo. During that time, she continued her pursuits in translational science research, and even spent a dedicated year as a research fellow working on applications of bone tissue engineering in the Craniofacial Research Laboratory at the University of Michigan. Since beginning her surgical training at Michigan, she has had greater exposure to health services research and has seen the immense impact it can have on formulating evidence-based practices to improve patient care and healthcare systems. Her current research interests include improving the cost of surgical care and optimizing healthcare delivery across large hospital systems with the advent of rapidly expanding healthcare systems nationwide. Dr. Luby is also enrolled in the "mini-MBA" Healthcare Administration Fellowship offered through a partnership between the University of Michigan Ross School of Business and the Department of Surgery. She sees immense value in increasing representation of surgeons in hospital leadership and through this unique programming, she aims to learn principles of business to prepare her for healthcare leadership roles in the future.

Andrew Ibrahim, MD, MSc is a faculty member in the Michigan Medicine Department of Surgery and the VA Ann Arbor Healthcare System. He also holds a secondary title as a faculty member at the Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning. Dr. Ibrahim received his medical doctor degree from Case Western Reserve University and the M.Sc. degree in health care research from the University of Michigan School of Graduate Studies. He has completed two fellowships in policy and outcomes research as the Doris Duke Fellow at Johns Hopkins Hospital and Robert Wood Johnson Clinical Scholar at the University of Michigan. He began the general surgery residency training program at University Hospitals of Cleveland. In 2017, he transferred to the Michigan Medicine general surgery residency training program, which he completed in June 2020. In September 2021, Dr. Ibrahim was appointed as the Co-Director of the Center for Healthcare Outcomes and Policy. Brandy Sinco

Biography Brandy holds a bachelors degree in engineering, and masters degrees in both mathematics and statistics. The American Public Health Association awarded Brandy a student research award for her statistics masters thesis on path analysis. She has also received "Advanced Analytics" and "Data for Good" awards from the Midwest SAS Users Group conference. She joined CHOP in September 2019, after working on central campus for over 20 years (Wolverine Tower, School of Public Health, School of Social Work). Brandy currently works with a team of oncology surgeons in Dr. Lesly Dossett's lab, trauma surgeons in Dr. John Scott's group, Dr. Sam Hendren's colo-rectal surgery group, assists the UM Surgery Culture crew with assessment, and presents at the various NCRC data analyst meetings. Prior to working at UM, Brandy worked at Irwin Magnetics, MedStat, and Ford. Outside of work, she enjoys playing the piano, composing music, singing in choir, yoga, tai chi, cardio karate, and making greeting cards.

Brian Fry

Dr. Fry is a general surgery resident at the University of Michigan. Originally from Colorado, he obtained a B.A. in economics from Bowdoin College in 2010. He then spent time as high school teacher and coach before completing a post-baccalaureate program at Boston University and eventually attending medical school here at the University of Michigan. During his time in medical school, he spent a year working here at CHOP as a medical student fellow while obtaining an M.S. in clinical research. Dr. Fry's research interests are in surgical quality improvement, specifically in leveraging evidence-based practices to improve the appropriateness of surgical care, as well as using implementation science to drive both policy and individual behavior change.

Catherine Jensen

Dr. Jensen is a general surgery resident from the University of Wisconsin and a National Clinical Scholar at the Institute for Healthcare Policy and Innovation. She grew up in central Wisconsin and graduated from Marquette University with a B.S. in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. She attended medical school at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health. During her time in medical school, she studied surgical overtreatment and barriers to guideline implementation in low-risk thyroid cancers. This experience fostered her interest in improving the experiences, quality of life, and outcomes of patients diagnosed with pre-malignant lesions and cancer. Her current research focuses on improving cancer care delivery, specifically surgical care, and patient-oriented clinical outcomes, including decision-making and identifying unmet psychosocial needs. Dominic Alessio-Bilowus

Dominic is a fourth-year medical student at Wayne State University in Detroit, MI and is currently spending a one-year dedicated research period with the section of plastic surgery at the University of Michigan. After completing his pathology training at Wayne State University in 2016, he spent four years in a hospital-based surgical pathology laboratory before enrolling in medical school. Since then, his interests have shifted to a more clinical focus, and he is now particularly invested in surgical outcomes and health systems research. Currently, his research work concentrates on optimizing presurgical testing as well as opioid prescribing patterns and screening tools in acute care. In any situation, Dominic loves exploring the intersection of science, clinical care and health system operations especially as they relate to surgical settings.

Edward C. Norton

Prof. Edward Norton is an economist and the UnitedHealthcare Professor of Health Care Management in the departments of Health Management & Policy and in Economics. Before coming to the U-M, Prof. Norton taught at UNC-Chapel Hill and at Harvard Medical School. He earned his PhD in economics from MIT in 1990. He serves as the Director of Quantitative Analytics at the Center for Healthcare Outcomes and Policy. In this role he leads our Center in the development of curricula and experiential learning in quantitative methods and novel analytic techniques. Prof. Norton's research interests span a wide range of topics in health economics and applied econometrics. He is known for his work on nursing home quality of care, pay-for-performance, and applied econometrics. Forrest Hosea

Forrest (they/them/their) is a qualitative research analyst at the Center for Healthcare Outcomes and Policy (CHOP) and Michigan Opioid Prescribing Engagement Network (OPEN). They earned their MPH at George Washington University in January 2022. Their early work was strongly influenced by community engaged research (CEnR) and community-based participatory research (CBPR) within the cancer realm. They worked primarily with and for LGBTQ+ and other underserved populations in "Cancer Action Councils (CACs)" - a group of local cancer survivors, caregivers, and advocates who are taught the basics of research to give them the tools to partner with researchers. With the LGBTQ CAC, Forrest worked to identify their cancer research priorities, ranked their top concerns, and collaborated with them on designing their own research study - tailoring a cancer caregiver support program to meet LGBTQ-specific needs. At Michigan Medicine, Forrest is looking forward to using and improving their skills in qualitative research methods, along with bringing the community's voice to the work they do.

Lauren Szczygiel

Lauren is a Qualitative Analyst at the Center for Healthcare Outcomes and Policy (CHOP). Biography Dr. Thompson is an Assistant Professor in the Section of Health Services Research and Quality in the Department of Cardiac Surgery at the University of Michigan Medical School. He also serves as the Director of Analytic Strategy at the Center for Healthcare Outcomes and Policy. In this role he leads the Center in the acquisition and use of data sources and emerging methodologies. He received his PhD in Epidemiology from Michigan State University in 2015, and his MPH from the University of Michigan School of Public Health in 2011. His research utilizes quantitative methods to evaluate the intended and unintended effects of health policy, health system redesign, and changes in clinical practice in patients undergoing cardiac surgery. He is also interested in research related to quality measurement and performance profiling, the adoption of electronic health records, and health care disparities. Dr. Thompson publishes regularly in both clinical and health policy journals, such as Circulation: Cardiovascular Quality and Outcomes, Critical Care Medicine, the American Journal of Managed Care, Health Services Research, and Health Affairs. In 2014, he received a Young Investigator Research Grant from the American Heart Association, and in 2017 was awarded the AHRQ/HCUP Outstanding Article of the Year Award. He is currently an active member of the Institute for Healthcare Policy and Innovation at the University of Michigan, the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association Council on Quality of Care and Outcomes Research, AcademyHealth, and The Society of Thoracic Surgeons. Biography Natalie Guzman is an MD/PhD student at the University of Michigan Medical School. Natalie is from Cincinnati, Ohio, and graduated in 2020 with BA in Medicine, Health, and Society at Vanderbilt University. Her interests include women's health and barriers to breast cancer treatment. During her time in medical school, she served as co-director for the UM Asylum Collaborative which provides medical affidavits to asylum seekers. She was also on the board of Doctors for Tomorrow which is a mentorship partnership with high school students at Cass Tech in Detroit. Biography My name is Nick, my pronouns are he/him/his, and I am a statistician at CHOP. I have my BS in Life Science Informatics and my MS in Bioinformatics from here at UM. I have previously focused on cancer epigenomics data analysis, but I am now working with Medicare claims data and HCUP with Dr. Andrew Ibrahim. As a statistician, I want to use my expertise to make real change in policy and culture - particularly in the way we see the intersections of race, gender, and health.

Originally from New Jersey, he obtained a B.A. in biology and sports medicine from the University of Miami in 2011 and attended medical school at St. George's University in Grenada. He recently completed a Pediatric Surgical Critical Care Fellowship here at the University of Michigan/CS Mott Children's Hospital and is now a clinical research fellow within the Section of Pediatric Surgery. Noelle is deeply passionate about global health and health equity. Before medical school, she spent three years working in Washington, DC at the Obama Foundation (non-profit), Families USA (non-profit), and Booz Allen Hamilton (consulting firm). This enabled her to work across the public and private sector and gain exposure of the US health care system from diverse viewpoints to further advance metric development, dashboard development, payment and delivery reform, process improvement, and research quality. In the summer of 2022, Noelle spent 9 weeks working in Geneva, Switzerland as a Duke-Geneva fellow to co-lead a research project with team members in South Africa, Uganda, Geneva, and India that focused on how to increase diagnostic capacity in low- and middle-income countries. Noelle's current research focus is on how to improve equitable access to hand surgery. Outside of school, she enjoys hikes, pilates, cycling, running, journaling, reading, and event planning! Noelle aspires to be a plastic and reconstructive surgeon who continues to strengthen local and global equity.

Dr. Schaefer is a general surgery resident in the Department of Surgery at the University of Michigan. She grew up in Boise, Idaho, and graduated from Western Washington University with a B.S. in Biochemistry. She attended medical school at the University of Washington. During medical school, she spent six months at a critical access hospital in rural Idaho and became interested in geographic variation in access to surgical subspecialty care, such as complex cancer surgery and transplant surgery. Her research interests focus on utilizing health care networks to optimize the delivery of surgical subspecialty services across a broad geographic region. She hopes to return to Idaho with a leadership role in the health system to continue to expand access to surgical care in the Intermountain West Region. Sarah Bradley

Sarah is Qualitative Analyst at the Center for Healthcare Outcomes and Policy (CHOP). She has a PhD in Applied Medical Anthropology and an MPH in Global Health Practice from the University of South Florida. Her previous academic work focused primarily on food insecurity, food charity, and social determinants of health. Prior to joining CHOP, she worked for the Veterans Health Administration as a Qualitative Researcher and GIS Analyst on topics including patient safety, health care access, traumatic brain injury, and therapeutic horticulture. At CHOP, she primarily contributes to colorectal cancer and bariatric surgery research and values opportunities to use applied qualitative research to improve healthcare access and patient care.

Biography Scott Regenbogen, MD, MPH is a Professor of Surgery and Division Chief of Colorectal Surgery. He also serves as Director of the Healthcare Administration Fellowship at the Center for Healthcare Outcomes and Policy. In this role he leads a 2 year fellowship focused on providing didactic and experiential learning in healthcare delivery. He graduated from Princeton University with an A.B. in psychology, and received his M.D. degree from the University of California, San Francisco. He completed General Surgery residency at the Massachusetts General Hospital, including three years as a Postdoctoral Fellow in Health Services Research, and was awarded a Master's in Public Health from the Harvard School of Public Health. He then completed fellowship training in Colon and Rectal Surgery at the Lahey Clinic, and joined the faculty of the University of Michigan in 2011. Dr. Regenbogen is also a health services researcher, with a focus on performance evaluation, and surgical safety and quality improvement.

Vanessa Niba

Dr. Niba is a general surgery resident at the University of Michigan, as well as a National Clinical Scholars Program fellow at the Institute of Healthcare Policy and Innovation. Originally from Yaounde, Cameroon, Dr. Niba grew up in Prince George's County, Maryland where she obtained a B.S. in Biochemistry at the University of Maryland and M.D. at George Washington University. During her time in medical school, she served as a community organizer working to expand access to care to the uninsured and underinsured populations of DC and Prince George's County. This experience fostered an interest in health care delivery and access to specialized surgical care. Her research interests currently focus on investigating how factors of social vulnerability influence disparities in the treatment of time-sensitive surgical conditions, specifically regarding complex cancer care and vascular disease. Dr. Niba is currently working towards a Master's in Healthcare Research through the Rackman Graduate School.

Whitney Fu

Dr. Fu is a general surgery resident at the University of Michigan. She is interested in pursuing pediatric or cardiothoracic surgery. She grew up in San Diego, CA, then attended Dartmouth College where she studied biology and anthropology and Yale School of Medicine for medical school. She served with AmeriCorps in New York City between college and medical school, and worked in the Community Services Administration of the City of New Haven during medical school. These experiences fueled her interested in public policy, health disparities, and healthcare delivery in resource-limited settings. Her research interests include disparities in the treatment of surgical disease, their outcomes, and burden of care on caregivers and families. She is also interested in the evaluation of post-operative quality of life and other patient-centered outcomes, and the effects of targeting modifiable risk factors on post-operative complication rates. Dr. Fu is working towards a Master's in Health and Healthcare Research through Rackham Graduate School and the Institute for Healthcare Policy and Innovation.

Zhaohui Fan

Biography Zhaohui received his MD degree from Xi'an Medical University in China followed by his MPH degree in biostatistics from the School of Public Health at the University of South Florida. Since August 2018, I joined CHOP as a statistician expert. My current major role as a statistician in CHOP is to support all kinds of data management and analytic needs for the faculties and research fellows in their clinical research activities. Zhaohui has been working on clinical registry survey design, data collection, database management, and statistical analysis since 2001, including several Michigan CQI programs such as: MBSC, MSQC, MUSIC, MVC, MTQIP, MiBOQI, etc. Zhaohui used to work for the Florida Department of Health as an epidemiologist, and worked on multiple population survey data and cancer registry data. After that, Zhaohui served as a statistician in a group called, Michigan Surgical Collaborative for Outcomes Research and Evaluation (M-SCORE) in the Department of Surgery at the University of Michigan Health System for five years. During that time, he worked extensively with health care administrative data such as Medicare/Medicaid and other clinical registry data and CQI programs, to evaluate the surgical care performance. He has worked closely with physicians on various research projects and participated in the funding application process. I moved on to ArborMetrix, a healthcare IT company in 2011, and worked there for seven years. I had been working on all sorts of clinical registry and CQI database, Medicare, BCBSM claim data etc. I had done a lot of standardization of the database and our analytic process with the team. In addition to technical skills and health care data knowledge enrichment, I had the opportunity to develop my leadership skills as a manager for the analytic system for a few years.
