The Internal Control Institute (ICI) is the first organization in the world to promote and develop the purpose of the internal control profession. The process of setting up the ICI began many years before the emergence of internal control violations at institutions such as Enron, WorldCom, and Global Crossing, which led to the removal of the Sarbanes-Oxley Act in the United States.
