Alexander Berlage

Alexander Berlage is an award-winning director and lighting designer and the Co-Artistic Director of Redline Productions at the Old Fitz Theatre.

Alexander Idaszak

Alexander Idaszak joined the Australian Ballet School in Melbourne after graduating from The McDonald College. He completed a Diploma in Dance and a Vocational Graduate Certificate in Classical Ballet. Alexander joined Queensland Ballet as a Company Dancer in 2013. He then spent a year with the Royal New Zealand Ballet in 2014 before returning to Queensland Ballet, where he was promoted to Demi-Soloist in 2016, Soloist in 2017 and Senior Soloist in 2019. In 2016, Alexander was awarded the Queensland Ballet's Khitercs Hirai International Scholarship for professional development travel. During an overseas study tour, he took classes with companies such as The Royal Ballet, English National Ballet, Staatsoper Berlin, Birmingham Royal Ballet, Scottish Ballet and Dutch National Ballet. Alexander's repertoire highlights include the The Prince in The Nutcracker, Albrecht in Giselle, Oberon in A Midsummer Night's Dream, Prince Siegfried in Swan Lake, Solor in La Bayadère, The Prince in Cinderella, Romeo in Romeo and Juliet, Young/Old Count Dracula in Dracula and Prince Desire in Greg Horsman's The Sleeping Beauty

Amanda McGuigan

Amanda McGuigan studied classical ballet at The McDonald College and as a student was cast as an extra in The Australian Ballet's premiere of Graeme Murphy's Swan Lake. She was a junior associate of The Australian Ballet School. At the age of 15, she moved to London to study at The Royal Ballet School, graduating in two years. While at the School, she toured Dubai, Spain, Japan and New York and performed in productions with The Royal Ballet. After graduating, she joined Ballet du Rhin in France. Shortly thereafter, she moved to New York, where she joined American Ballet Theater (2007-10) followed by the Dutch National Ballet (2010-13). With these two companies, she toured extensively and danced in featured roles such as Lady Montague in Romeo and Juliet, a Lead Swan in Swan Lake and the Lilac Fairy in The Sleeping Beauty. ‘For me, the stage is a magical place,' Amanda has said. ‘You can hear every single thought in your mind. You can feel the vibrations of the other dancers, and foremost, the audience's energy resonates onto the stage, and as a dancer, that's my life force.' She joined The Australian Ballet in 2014 and was promoted to coryphée in 2015. She was also a nominee for the prestigious 2015 Telstra Ballet Dancer Award. In 2019, Amanda was part of the ensemble that performed for The Enchanted Lunch - a partnership between The Australian Ballet and the acclaimed restaurant Dinner By Heston Blumenthal.

Blake Bowden

Blake Bowden (2002 graduate) is a multifaceted performer of immense talent and charisma and stands as a beacon of artistic excellence in the realm of theatre and entertainment. Blake Bowden's journey into the world of performing arts began at a young age, right here at the College. From mesmerizing audiences as the enigmatic Raoul in "The Phantom of the Opera" to capturing hearts as the charming Guy in "Once," Blake's ability to inhabit diverse characters with depth and authenticity has earned him widespread acclaim. Currently, he is set to embark on an exhilarating new chapter as he takes on the iconic role of Frank N Furter in the electrifying production of "The Rocky Horror Show." Embracing the seductive and enigmatic allure of this beloved character, Blake's portrayal promises to be a tour de force, blending his unparalleled talent with a dash of theatrical daring. Callan Smith

Callan Smith studied acting and musical theatre at The McDonald College but was also a budding chef. He applied to Network Ten's MasterChef Australia while he was undertaking the HSC. While most of his school mates were preparing their university applications, Callan was preparing for his reality TV debut. The former school captain was one of the top-10 finalists of the 2017 season, wowing judges with his quirky and adventurous dishes. He was also one of the youngest contestants in the show's history. Although he didn't make it to the final, Callan grew an Australian-wide following from his experience on the show. He opened a candy-bar-themed pop-up store at Bondi Beach following the show.

Chris Egan

In the ever-evolving landscape of Hollywood, success stories often emerge from unexpected places. One such narrative is that of Chris Egan, an alumnus of The McDonald College, whose journey from our halls to the global stage is worth exploring. Chris Egan's roots in the performing arts took hold during his formative years at The McDonald College. Engaging in school productions, Egan's commitment to acting began to shape, laying the groundwork for what would become a notable career. Post-graduation, Egan ventured into the Australian television scene with a significant role in "Home and Away." This marked the beginning of his foray into Hollywood, as he seamlessly made the transition to larger projects on an international scale. From his early roles to more significant projects like "Kings," Egan's journey in Hollywood reflected a gradual climb up the industry ladder. His versatility and on-screen presence began to capture the attention of audiences and industry insiders alike. While Egan's Hollywood career is notable, his involvement in philanthropy also deserves recognition. Daniel Raso

Daniel Raso is an Australian-based actor, singer and dancer known for his roles across TV, musical theatre, and film. Following his time at The McDonald College, he trained at the Australian International Conservatorium of Music, Urban Dance Centre, and Cool Kidz Song & Dance Co. Most recently, Daniel received rave reviews for his portrayal of Simeon in the Australian tour of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. "Daniel Raso's rendition of Those Canaan Days is career-defining, with the audience applause, whoops and hollers literally stopping the show. And the wow factor of Raso's sustained notes? Bravo, sir!" He has held numerous roles in theatrical productions, including David Van in American Psycho (Hayes Theatre), Frankie Valli in Jersey Boys (New Theatricals), Michael Wormwood in Matilda The Musical (Australian tour), Sonny & Ensemble in Grease (Australasian tour), Paul in Kiss Me Kate (Chinese tour) and Cash in The Tap Pack (Civic Theatre). He was also an assistant choreographer in Doctor Zhivago (World Premiere), High School Musical (Capitol Theatre), Thomas and the Hidden Treasure (Asian tour), The Little Big Club (Asian/Middle East tour) and Beaudy (Parade Theatre). Daniel has appeared in television roles, including Puberty Blues (Network 10) and A Place to Call Home (Channel 7) and was a top-24 finalist in the 2009 season of Australian Idol (Network 10). His film credits include two Bollywood feature films, Orange (2010) and Mr Perfect (2011).

Dr. Katherine Bolton

Dr. Katherine Bolton, a multifaceted professional with a diverse background in science, education, and medical genetics. Katherine's journey began at The McDonald College, where she immersed herself in the Classical Ballet stream from 1985 to 1990, ultimately graduating as Dux. Since 2017, Katherine has served as a Research Governance Officer for the Central Coast Local Health District, progressing to the role of Research Manager in 2020. Her office is based at the Central Coast Research Institute on the Gosford Hospital campus.

Elizabeth Cooper

Elizabeth Cooper is an accomplished performer and teacher with an established teaching studio in Sydney. She is currently a private voice teacher for The McDonald College and St. Leo's Catholic College, and she is also the Choral Director of Hornsby Girls High School Junior Choir. Elizabeth has a Bachelor of Music Performance from the Sydney Conservatorium of Music and has toured internationally with Gondwana Voices, Sydney Children's Choir, in addition to performing in operas, musicals and recitals across New South Wales. As a teacher she aims to foster a strong passion for singing in all students whilst developing a healthy vocal technique that will allow each singer to experience longevity and versatility in their singing pursuits. She is experienced with vocalists of all ages including taking students through HSC Music and preparing them for auditions for postgraduate Music and Music Theatre degrees at various institutions across Australia.

Gemma Nha

Gemma Nha, an esteemed alumna of The McDonald College Performing Arts, is a Korean-Australian soprano whose journey in the world of classical music has garnered international acclaim. Graduating from the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna with a Bachelor of Arts Gesang (Honours) under the guidance of Peter Edelmann, Gemma has continued to shine in the realm of opera and vocal arts. In her expansive repertoire, Gemma has debuted in prominent roles, including Ruth Baldwin in John Musto and Mark Campbell's Later the Same Evening and Flerida in Cavalli's Erismena, both with Juilliard Opera. Her achievements include winning First Prize at the 18th Seoul International Music Competition, where judges praised her impeccable diction, vocal color, and interpretation. Gemma's operatic journey has seen her perform at distinguished venues such as the Volksoper Wien, Santa Fe Opera, and the Schlosstheater Schönbrunn, showcasing her versatility in roles like Barbarina in Le nozze di Figaro, Zerlina in Don Giovanni, and Gretel in Hänsel und Gretel. Beyond opera, Gemma has left an indelible mark in musical theatre, making her professional debut in The King and I Seefestspiele Mörbisch and performing in productions like The Drowsy Chaperone and 7 Little Australians Opera Carnivale. Her foray into the musical theatre scene also includes sharing the stage with Patti Lupone on her 2018 Don't Monkey with Broadway tour at the Sydney Opera House. Gemma's accolades include the Liederkranz Foundation Second Prize at the Gerda Lissner Foundation Lieder/Song Competition in 2023, an Encouragement Award at the Gerda Lissner Foundation International Vocal Competition, and the Margreta Elkins Encouragement Award at the Joan Sutherland & Richard Bonynge Foundation Bel Canto Award in 2022. She was also a finalist in the 2020 Lotte Lenya Competition and has achieved success at The Sydney Eisteddfod in various categories. Isabella Manfredi

Jane Beckett

Jane Beckett was born in London and began her dance training at the age of five. She was accepted into the Royal Ballet School at the age of eight. In 1964, her parents immigrated to Melbourne and Jane continued her balletic studies at the National Ballet School/Kathleen Gorham, followed by the Australian Ballet School. After completing the two year Diploma Course at the ABS she joined Ballet Victoria. Jane then went to Europe and was accepted into the Ulmer Theatre Ballet Company in West Germany dancing in a variety of roles from ballet to musical comedy. She returned back to Australia in 1978, and danced on many TV shows, commercials, club engagements and performed in the musicals The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas, Evita and West Side Story. Jane began teaching in 1980 and started choreographing in 1982. Her dance group State of the Art won the TV Show Star Search in 1986. She has choreographed for Barry Humphries, John Farnham and the Fabulous Singlettes. In 1995, Jane was asked by David Atkins to take on the position of Performing Arts Principal for Dynamite Dance Studios. When Brent Street Studios took over in 1997, they asked her to stay on as Principal. Jane was affiliated with Brent Street Studios until 2005 and is now Head of Dance at The McDonald College, Sydney. Over the years she has developed a unique choreographic style, mixing ballet/contemporary and jazz in an eclectic mix.

Laura Ariola

Laura Ariola (formerly Scuderi) began her classical ballet training with Donna Burland, and under her tuition completed her Australian Teachers of Dancing exams up to Advanced level. In 1995, she commenced her academic and after hours studies at The McDonald College under the guidance of Josephine Jason and Allan Cross. During this time Laura completed her RAD examinations to Intermediate level and was a member of the Premier State Ballet Youth Company, performing in Sydney and around NSW in many ballets including The Nutcracker, Don Quixote, Swan Lake, and Coppelia. She also danced the guest role of Coppelia with the Queensland Ballet in 1998. In 1999, Laura was accepted into the Australian Ballet School, where she gained the opportunity to perform with the Australian Ballet in their productions of Coppelia and Raymonda. Laura then went on to complete her certificate in Dance Teaching and Management with the Australian Teachers of Dancing gaining a Distinction. She has been teaching classical ballet in both the ATOD and RAD syllabi, Tap, and Jazz since 2001, and has choreographed many solos and group performances for her students, many of whom have been successful in competitions and scholarships throughout Australia. Many of Laura's past students have gone on to gain places in prestigious ballet schools both in Australia and internationally, as well as within the Australian Dance and TV industries.

Li Cunxin AO

Craig Cathcart began ballet training at the age of five. From 1990 - 95, he attended the College to further develop his classical skills. In 1996 he was invited to study at The Australian Ballet School before dancing with the Australian Ballet. Afterwards, Craig joined the Norwegian National Ballet. He has danced the Prince in The Nutcracker, the Bluebird in Sleeping Beauty, the pas de trois in Swan Lake, Carlotta Grisi in Pas de Quatre and the Hilarion / Peasant pas de deux in Giselle. He has also danced in works such as Balanchine's Symphony in Three Movements, Forsythe's The Second Detail and Limb's Theorem, Tetley's The Rite of Spring, Wheeldon's The Christening Suite and Kylián's Symphony of Psalms and 27'52". In addition, he has had roles created specifically for him by the choreographers Boyadjiev and Øyen. In the last three years of his dancing career, Craig attained his Graduate Certificate of Arts and Entertainment Management through Deakin University in Melbourne. Craig accepted an invitation to apply for the role of Company Manager by Artistic Director, Li Cunxin AO at Queensland Ballet, who put him forward for the role at the Brisbane-based ballet company. He's been there for 7 years now and currently working with Li as Head of Artistic Operations overseeing the strategic planning of the company's world-class productions and the Artistic administration of his team. Speaking to the Australian Institute of Business, Craig said, "I never really sought out a career in arts management. Honestly, I just fell into it. It feels so familiar somehow being around the art form I'm so passionate about. I love it! … One of the key motivators for Craig to undertake his MBA is that he wanted to "learn more about key areas of the business like governance, finance, marketing, and HR, to have a more well-rounded view with some sort of credibility."

Natalie Christodoulides

Natalie Christodoulides began her dance training at Dorothy Cowie School of Dance before being accepted in to The McDonald Performing Arts College in 2001 where she studied Classical Ballet, Jazz and Tap. In her time as a dancer, Natalie completed her Australasian Dance Association (ADA) examinations to a high level and also completed her Royal Academy of Dance (RAD) examinations in both Grade 8 and Advanced Foundation Classical Ballet. Natalie is also involved in the Australian Cheerleading Federation (AASCF), winning back-to-back State and National titles in Cheer, Contemporary Dance and Pom competitions and Eisteddfods. Natalie has been assistant teaching at The McDonald College After Hours Program since 2013 specialising in RAD Preliminary, Pre Primary, Primary and Grade 1 Classical Ballet classes. Natalie has also taught up to our RAD Advanced 1 level classes. In 2016, Natalie was offered to begin teaching her own Preschool Ballet classes at The McDonald College and has proven to be a great asset to our teaching faculty. This same year she graduated from the Australian Catholic University with a Bachelor of Primary Education. She enjoys being able to combine the two great loves in her life: dancing and teaching.

Sydney Dance

  • Company Resident Dancer Dimitri Kleioris
Dimitri Kleioris, started his dance education at The McDonald College, beginning as a jazz and tap student and eventually specialising in classical ballet. He told Dance Australia, "In the middle of Year 10 the Head of Ballet said to me, ‘I want you to join Premier State Ballet and take on the role of Albrecht in Giselle'. I'd only been doing ballet for two years and didn't know what that meant." His teacher suggested focusing on ballet for the year and advised that when he returned to other styles of dance he would be exponentially better. As his love for ballet blossomed, he recognised his genuine desire to pursue it as a career. After graduating from the College, he accompanied a friend who was auditioning for The Australian Ballet School and decided to audition too - thinking it would be a good experience. He was accepted, and at the age of 17, moved to Melbourne." Three years later, he auditioned for the Royal New Zealand Ballet and was hired on the spot. He toured the country as a principal and ensemble member.

Trudy Kearns

Trudy Kearns is a Sydney-based dance teacher, choreographer and dancer with over 20 years teaching experience working with children and adults. Trudy has completed her extensive training with the RAD ballet Syllabus completing up to Advanced 1. Her training and experience include Contemporary Dance, Lyrical and Modern Expressive and Jazz Dance Technique. She undertook full-time training with with Hilary Kaplan and achieved RAD CBTS RTS 2001, and is an RAD CBTS Mentor. Trudy has also trained under Patricia Stevens, Sarah Minol, Cameron Mitchell, Mat Lee, Jeff McCormack and Marie Walton-Mahon, becoming registered in the Progressing Ballet Technique Program 2017. Trudy teaches RAD from Grade 1 through to Advanced 2, achieving an excellent standard and results. Trudy has choreographed dances that were entered into eisteddfods all over Sydney including the Sydney Eisteddfod, achieving excellent results. She also co-choreographed and co-produced productions performed at Disney Land California. Student's taught by Trudy have been accepted in to full-time courses in Queensland, Brent Street and The McDonald College, in addition to dancing with New Zealand and the English National Ballet.
