Our projects encompass finding solutions to real-world environmental problems using a fundamental, mechanistic physicochemical approach. We focus on analytical methods development (e.g., LC/MS/MS), chemical reaction kinetics, byproduct identification and characterization, and process and computational modeling (e.g., oxidation kinetics, hydrolysis, equilibrium, and sorption reactions). A key approach in our work is to develop new and innovative analytical methods using state-of-art instrumentation, and then to apply these methods to better understand relevant issues related to emerging contaminants and develop solutions often related to water treatment. We work closely with water utilities and industry to facilitate development of effective experimental designs, field testing, and rapid technology transfer to full-scale treatment.
