ST JOHN'S RC PRIMARY SCHOOL

Our day started with gathering together for mass with Father Michael for All Souls' Day. After Mass, we began our Day of the Dead (Dia De Los Muertos) celebrations. Dia De Los Muertos is a two day celebration that reunites the living and the dead. Within the celebration, families create ofrendas (offerings) to honor their departed family members that have passed. These altars are decorated with bright yellow marigold flowers, photos of the departed, and the favourite foods and drinks of the one being honored. As part of us learning about and celebrating the Day of the Dead, each class created a shrine to remember someone that has died. At the end of school day, we all gathered together to share and talk about our shrines and place them on the school's ofrenda. As a school, we took the time to remember many people which included Nelson Mandela, Florence Nightingale, Saint Teresa and many of the animals which are currently being affected by deforestation.
