Dr. Maria Montessori was the first woman physician in Italy. Her interest as a physician was to care for mentally challenged children. Basing her work on the principles evolved by two french doctors, Dr. Montessori was successful in increasing the level of development of these children to the extent where they could enter a mainstream school.

Shirani Dhawan founded CLC in 1979 to promote early childhood education in the Conejo Valley. Mrs. Dhawan was introduced and trained in Montessori techniques by Mario Montessori, Dr. Maria Montessori's son. She graduated from the AMI Centre in London in 1968 and has been teaching internationally since then. She has taught and help start many Montessori schools in the greater Los Angeles area. Mrs. Dhawan has also trained teachers in Montessori techniques. In addition to her Montessori credentials, she also holds a degree in child psychology and is active in child development issues. CLC is a privately owned school and has complete freedom to implement its own curriculum which is designed by Mrs. Dhawan.
