Dr. Charles A. Fowler, the 23rd president of Carson-Newman University, was elected unanimously on June 7, 2019. The Corinth, Miss.-native is a graduate of Union University, New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary and Mississippi State University.
Prior to beginning his service at Carson-Newman, he served as Senior Pastor of Germantown Baptist Church in Germantown, TN. Prior to that, he served in various senior administrative roles at Union University in Jackson, TN.
Dr. Fowler has served on the Board of Trustees for several organizations, including Baptist Memorial Healthcare System, Union University, Blue Mountain College, The John Dustin Buckman Charitable Trust and the International Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention.
He is also a published author. His most recent book chapter contribution was R. G. Lee: Rhetorical Artistry in the Pulpit published in A Legacy of Preaching: Historical and Theological Introductions. Dr. Fowler has also edited two books - Reclaiming the Gospel at Home for Men and Reclaiming the Gospel at Home for Women.
Dr. Fowler has been married to his college sweetheart, Sandra, for 37 years. They have two daughters - Anna (Justin) who reside in Jefferson City, TN and Sarah (Bryan) who reside in Jonesboro, AR. Dr. Fowler and Sandra are blessed to enjoy three grandchildren - Charlie, Lucy and Fowler.

Since becoming President in the summer of 2019, the Carson-Newman family has been my home. We have spent 16 months developing a five-year strategic plan called Acorns to Oaks: Pursuing God's Preferred Future. It is a bold plan that adds several new academic programs, calls for new and renovated facilities, builds on great athletic tradition with new sports and expanded facilities, and it prioritizes people over projects by recommitting ourselves to serve our students with Christ-centered excellence while supporting our stellar teaching faculty and staff well.
God is at work at Carson-Newman. He is calling us into a future that will advance His Kingdom through equipping students to reach their highest potential and become educated citizens and worldwide servant leaders. The world has never needed Carson-Newman graduates more than now. Charles A. Fowler, Ph.D., was installed as president of Carson-Newman in 2019, following an intentional, prayer-guided search. He most recently served as senior pastor of Germantown Baptist Church (GBC) in West Tennessee, a congregation with a rich history of faithful gospel ministry and missional engagement.
Prior to pastoral ministry at GBC, Dr. Fowler held executive positions at Union University, including senior vice president of University Relations, vice president for Enrollment Management, vice president for Development, founding executive director of the Union University Foundation, and professor of Christian ministries and education. Dr. Fowler has also taught at Mississippi State University and The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary.
Dr. Fowler has served in leadership roles with the International Mission Board, Baptist Memorial Healthcare, Union University, Blue Mountain College and the Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission.
A native of Corinth, Mississippi, Dr. Fowler is a graduate of Union University, Mississippi State University and New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary. He and his wife, Sandra, have two adult daughters.

Dr. Jonathan Akin is the Vice President for Church Relations and Campus Ministries at Carson-Newman University. He also serves as the Director of a pastor training program for the North American Mission Board called "Leadership Institute" and as an adjunct Old Testament professor at the Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary. Dr. Akin is the author of books like Preaching Christ from Proverbs, Exalting Jesus in Proverbs, and Exalting Jesus in Ecclesiastes, as well as a contributor to Louie Giglio's The Jesus Bible and R. Albert Mohler's The Grace and Truth Study Bible. He has served as a pastor of churches in Kentucky, Tennessee and Florida. He and his wife Ashley have three children - Maddy, Emma Grace and Judson.
