It was extremely interesting and enlightening to hear Perino speak about politics. Although she has a clear right wing stance on television, she is by no means a conservative with only one narrow way of seeing the world. The current political climate makes it easy to feel like this nation is divided along strict ideological lines with no room for gray areas or mutual understanding and respect, but Perino provided a refreshing counter to that feeling. When she discussed the current election with us, she was very familiar with details and subtleties on both sides of the political spectrum, and openly said that she understands the reasons people support different candidates. This Perino is a very different one than the one appearing on the news, which just illustrates the existence of "mediated reality" that we have been learning about as political communication tool this whole semester.
