King received his Bachelor of Science in Electronics Engineering Technology from Oregon Institute of Technology. He holds a patent entitled 'Toll Free Account Recharge System and Method' which details a technique for mobile devices to recharge minutes by tying the mobile device owner's credit card information to their device: it is mostly used on prepaid phones. Prior to developing industrial controls systems, King co-founded a mobile software development company called Atom Technology. This venture-funded company developed compiler/linker software to permit large applications to run on small mobile devices. It was similar in functionality to Docker: see www.docker.com. Atom Technology was sold to Vesta Inc.
