HLAAWI - Key Persons
Hello! I am a resident of Madison and the President of the HLAA Madison Chapter. I was born with a severe/profound hearing loss, raised in the oral tradition, have two cochlear implants, and identify functionally with Hard-of-Hearing individuals. I worked as a psychologist and retired about five years ago. My time is focused on my grandchildren, working to improve mental health services to both Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing people in Wisconsin, and access to services and life events. My primary hobby is woodworking and making furniture.
Following a successful career in private practice in Oshkosh Wisconsin, Dutch born audiologist Dr. Juliëtte Sterkens is currently on her encore career as the Hearing Loss Association of America's professional hearing loop advisor. In this capacity, she ardently advocates for inclusion of and properly programmed built-in telecoils in hearing aids and cochlear implants, the installation of hearing loop systems that meet IEC 60118-4, as well as other T-coil compatible assistive technology, to permit universal hearing access for consumers with hearing loss in Wisconsin, the United States and the world over.
