ACTION FOR CHILDREN - Key Persons


Alun Michael

Alun Michael is a passionate supporter of Action for Children's work to tackle child criminal exploitation. A Labour & Cooperative MP for 25 years, he resigned in 2012 to serve as Police & Crime Commissioner for South Wales and led the Labour Group of PCCs and Deputy Mayors until May 2024. Appointed Deputy Home Secretary in 1997, he introduced Community Safety Partnerships, Youth Offending Teams and the Youth Justice Board. After being Secretary of State for Wales, he became the first First Minister of Wales. After an early career as a newspaper reporter, Alun was a youth worker working with young offenders, chaired Cardiff Juvenile Magistrates and was a leading City Councillor.

Angela Rippon

Angela is a renowned Broadcaster, journalist, and TV presenter and has been an ambassador since 1989. Over the years, Angela has supported Action for Children in numerous ways, from hosting events, visiting our services, donating auction prizes, and shining a light on our campaigns in the media. Most recently, Angela was the host of our prestigious Stephenson Awards 2023.

Angharad Roberts

Angharad Roberts is a Creative Writing & Media student at Cardiff Metropolitan University and is from Anglesey, North Wales. Angharad was supported by Skills4Living and Llamau in North Wales who helped her with her independence, mental health, practical life skills as well as preparation for University life. She won a Stephenson Outstanding Young Achiever award in 2019 and was appointed to the Wales Committee in January the same year.

Anthea Turner

Anthea is a television presenter and author. She has supported Action for Children for many years by hosting a variety of events, fundraising throughout the year, and supporting our annual Secret Santa campaign. She has also supported many of our corporate partnerships to help raise awareness and funds for Action for Children.

Baroness Kathleen Richardson

The Reverend Kathleen Richardson was appointed to the House of Lords in 1998. Formerly a Methodist minister, she is particularly interested in church affairs and inter-faith relations. She was Chair of the London Ecumenical AIDS Trust and former Vice President of the Council for Christians and Jews.

Co-founder of SThree (a leading computer specialist staffing company), Bill has been a generous advocate and major supporter since 1998. He has given significant gifts to the organisation. Bill has been a loyal supporter of our biggest annual fundraiser, Byte Night, now Boycott Your Bed.

Brigitte Gater

Job Titles:
  • Interim Managing Director for Children 's Services
As the Interim Managing Director for Children's Services, Brigitte is responsible for all children's services. This includes SEND and residential care services, children's centres, nurseries, family support, fostering, adoption, and for the charity's growth strategy across the four nations. She is a strong supporter of the Green Agenda and Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) across the workplace. Previously, Brigitte was the National Director Wales (from 2017) and prior to that she was the Director-UK West (2014 - 2017). Both held responsibility for managing a wide range of children's services. Brigitte has worked in Children's Services since 1986, qualifying as a social worker in 1992. Her career at Action for Children started in 1987 as a sessional Play Worker/Play Leader and a Project Leader, at which point Brigitte left the organisation to take up the National Manager post with a specialist adoption charity. This was followed by a move to Barnardo's. Brigitte returned to Action for Children in 2003 as an Assistant Director, Group Manager, and Operational Director. Brigitte lives in Penarth - a seaside town outside of Cardiff - with her partner. Their children have now grown up; one lives in London and the other lives in Cardiff. Brigitte is Interim Managing Director of Children's Services.

Charles Geekie

Charles Geekie joined the Board of Trustees at Action for Children in April 2023. Charles is a practising barrister at 1GC Family Law. His work covers all areas of the law in relation to children. He acts for local authorities, parents, guardians and children providing direct instructions. In the private law field, he deals with cases with an international dimension, cases involving abduction and relocation. He conducts cases at all levels of court, including the Supreme Court. He has undertaken part-time judicial roles as a Recorder and Deputy High Court judge. He sits as an Arbitrator in children cases. For seven years he was a co-head of chambers at 1GC where he led a highly successful expansion of the chambers. Charles has a particular interest in services that support children and families. Court proceedings are very stressful for any family. Any support that helps a family to resolve difficulties without court proceedings is a success. After many years focused on court proceedings, Charles is interested in building successful support services.

Dame Mary

Dame Mary is an extremely generous philanthropist, actively supporting numerous charities and good causes. Her advocacy for children's healthcare and wellbeing is one of her main passions and we are extremely grateful for her long-term support of Action for Children. Mary is a TV news journalist, broadcaster, and presenter. She has anchored ITN's Evening News since 2001 and is a vocal ambassador for our work. Since becoming an ambassador in 2002, Mary has hosted numerous events, awards ceremonies, and generously donated auction prizes to support our fundraising efforts.

Dame Mary Perkins DBE

Dame Mary Perkins DBE is co-founder of Specsavers, an international optical and audiology healthcare business extending from the UK and Europe to Australia, New Zealand, Canada and the US. The family-owned business, which operates with a locally owned and run joint venture partnership model, was founded more than 40 years ago.

Dawn Warwick

Dawn Warwick joined the Board of Trustees at Action for Children in January 2020 and is our Vice Chair. She is a social care specialist, with 17 years' director-level experience of leading services for adults and children, with a focus on improvement programmes and service transformation. She started her career as a Research Assistant with the World Health Organisation, and subsequently qualified as a Social Worker in 1983. Dawn is passionate about achieving the best possible outcomes for service users within increasingly challenging financial circumstances. Her strengths include the delivery of sizeable efficiencies and improved outcomes through commissioning and service review. Her focus on practice standards and the planning and delivery of culture change supports new and innovative ways of working. Dawn opted to take early retirement in September 2018 to work more flexibly and independently, and to train at Henley Business School as an Executive Coach. She is currently coaching both public and private sector aspirant senior managers. She is a member of the advisory board of GRIT, a charity that works with vulnerable young people. Dawn Warwick is a social care specialist with 17 years of director-level experience

Dermot Murnaghan

Dermot is a News Broadcaster and presenter, and currently anchors SKY News. Dermot has been an ambassador since 2002 and is a passionate supporter of our work. He regularly hosts events, awards ceremonies, and has campaigned to raise awareness of our services and appeals.

She is an ardent supporter of our work and since becoming an ambassador in 2010, Emily has hosted numerous events, visited services, and regularly participates in interviews to highlight the important work we do to support vulnerable families.

Enda Johnson

Enda Johnson joined the Board of Trustees at Action for Children in July 2020. He is a senior business leader with over 20 years of public company and government experience. He holds degrees in Engineering and Economics from Brown University. His experience includes corporate strategy, mergers and acquisitions and finance. His particular skills include business transformation, strategy delivery and investor engagement. Enda is currently a Strategic Advisor at Bank of Ireland. He is also a Non-Executive Director at Bank of Ireland UK Plc. His previous executive roles where at Bank of Ireland and Interim CFO at Virgin Money, where he was also Corporate Development Director for 6 years. Prior to joining Virgin Money / CYBG Enda held senior roles at Allied Irish Banks, the Irish National Treasury Management Agency and Merrill Lynch. Enda Johnson's has a background in financial services, including corporate affairs and finance and strategy

Fatima Whitbread

Fatima is a former Olympian and javelin world record holder who spent the first few years of her life in children's care homes. Fatima has supported Action for Children since 2022 and became an official ambassador in 2023 for her dedication to fundraising, visiting services, and advocating our work in the media. Fiona Adams - CFO

Job Titles:

Fiona joined Action for Children in September 2022 as Director of Finance. Prior to this, she worked as Director of Worldwide Finance for a private equity owned American company. She has worked in finance since qualifying in 1994. Fiona joined the Executive Leadership Team in May 2023 as an extension to her original role. She's married to Sean with two grown up sons, Liam and Harry, and Cilla the Sproodle puppy. In her spare time Fiona enjoys open water swimming and beach cleaning. Fiona is the Director of Finance at Action for Children.

Flora Martin

Flora Martin MBE has supported Action for Children for over 20 years. She has been very actively involved in fundraising, most notably as a founding member of the Woman of Influence committee on which she served for ten years followed by nine years as a co-opted member of the Scotland Committee. She continues to support the charity by attending events, encouraging her network to support and engage with Action for Children and sharing her expertise and knowledge when required.

Gordon Bullock

Gordon's involvement with us started when he was Chief Operating Officer for TK Maxx, who also supported our Employability Scheme. Gordon is an experienced international retailer, having held the role of Managing Director of LC Waikiki, Turkey's largest fashion retailer.

Hilary Armstrong

Jenny Agutter

Jenny is an award-winning actor and has been an ambassador since 2008. She has offered immeasurable support over the years, from hosting events, offering auction prizes, and championing our campaigns in countless radio, press, and broadcast interviews. Perhaps most notably, Jenny has slept out at almost every Byte Night event (now Boycott Your Bed) since it launched in 1998.

Jessica Hynes

Jessica is an award-winning actor, writer, and director. She has been an Action for Children ambassador since 2009. Jessica supports our work by hosting events, participating in interviews, and appearing on numerous TV shows to discuss our campaigns and events. Jessica has also abseiled, completed a skydive, and slept out at our Boycott Your Bed event several times to raise awareness and funds for Action for Children.

Jimmy Akingbola

Jimmy is a British actor, best known for his roles in The Tower and Bel-Air. He also hosts ITV's long-running panel show charting black history, Sorry I Didn't Know, and co-founded TriForce Productions which helps to provide opportunities to discover diverse talent including actors, writers, directors and producers. Alongside his beloved acting roles, Jimmy also released his own, deeply personal documentary Handle With Care which traced his own journey of growing up in the care system. Jimmy became an Action for Children Celebrity Ambassador in 2025 after supporting for two years; most recently, the i-Appeal, John Lewis Partnerships Gazette, and Action for Children's Foster care Campaign.

Jo French - COO

Job Titles:

Jo is the Chief Operating Officer and Interim Executive Leadership Team member for IT & Property. Initially working in the food industry, Jo moved to children's services in 2003 to run a public health project across the NHS, Local Authority, and the Surestart initiative.  In 2007, she moved to the children's charity, 4Children, where she worked as the National Development Manager. Her role focused on quality and policy across their children's services for children aged 0 to 19. She also held a number of leadership roles in this position. In 2016, Jo joined Action for Children and has since run a large award-winning childcare group attached to Action for Children. She was also the lead on Airplay Youth Services. Jo is married to Richard and lives in Yorkshire with her family. In her spare time, Jo is a keen Formula 1 enthusiast and enjoys gardening. Jo is the Chief Operating Officer at Action for Children.

Ken Deeks

Ken is a former journalist and PR consultant. He now runs The Amber Group, a training company specialising in communications coaching, including media training, presentation coaching, bid support and storytelling. Ken is the Founder and co-chair of Byte Night, our largest annual fundraising event, which we've now developed into Boycott Your Bed. He has helped raise over £14 million to support our work. Ken has previously been an Ambassador for Action for Children and has been awarded an MBE for his services to young people through his support of Action for Children.

Lady Henrietta St. George

Lady Henrietta is the Honourable Chair and a founding member of the Action for Children London Appeal Group. She is a major donor, having made personal donations to support our services.

Larry Lamb

Larry is an actor and radio presenter and has been an ambassador since 2017. He has been a hugely active supporter, from appearing on TV shows to discuss various campaigns and appeals to supporting corporate pitches. Examples of Larry's support include Secret Santa campaigns, participating in Byte Night/Boycott Your Bed, and taking part in press and broadcast interviews. Lavinia Carey

As Director General of the British Video Association (BVA), Lavinia has been invaluable in fostering a partnership between us and the video industry. Led by the BVA, the industry has raised over £3 million for Action for Children.

Leslie Evans

Leslie Evans joined Action for Children's Board of Trustees in August 2022. Working in local government for 20 years developing, managing and delivering services to the public in both England and Scotland, Leslie joined the UK civil service in 2000. In 2015 she became the first woman to be appointed Permanent Secretary to the Scottish Government, Scotland's most senior civil servant and principal policy adviser to the First Minister and her Cabinet, representing Scotland and Scotland's interests at the highest level in UK and internationally. Leslie Evans has 20 years experience in local government, in both England and Scotland, before she joined the UK civil service in 2000

Locks Farmer

Locks started her career in the charity sector in 2005 at Cancer Research. During Locks' 12 years at Cancer Research UK, across various leadership roles, she achieved a number of notable successes. She led the team which recruited one million women to take part in Race for Life (the UK's largest women-only fundraising event), set-up multi-million pound income streams across corporate partnerships and led the charity's celebrity foundation and high-value division. Locks joined Action for Children in 2017 and strives to transform the level of support and funding the charity receives and, in turn, make a sustainable difference to the lives of the most disadvantaged children in the UK. Locks is a busy mum, with two young children, and in her spare time enjoys running and open water swimming. Locks is Managing Director of Income and Engagement.

Louise Wade

Louise Wade is passionate about the mental health of children and young people.

Lynda Myles-Till

Lynda has been involved with Action for Children since 1988, after meeting Catherine, an eight-year-old left paralysed for life after suffering abuse. Lynda founded the first of the charity's appeal groups, bringing together influential people to raise vital funds for the charity's support services. She has helped unlock transformational gifts for Action for Children. She is Founder and Chair of our annual Spring Lunch, which raises over £100,000 each year. Lynda has previously been an Ambassador for Action for Children and has been awarded an MBE for her services to young people through her support of Action for Children.

Lynne Atkin

Lynne Atkin MBE joined the Board of Trustees at Action for Children in January 2022. Lynne has over 30 years experience within HR, and her last executive role was for Barclays where she was the HR Director for Barclays UK plc. Lynne worked in the energy industry for 11 years as HR Director for the energy supply business, supporting the business through privatisation. Lynne is passionate about diversity and inclusivity in Talent Management and Early Careers, becoming the driving force behind the Bank's Apprenticeship Programme, and culture and engagement in driving business performance. She was awarded an MBE for services to HR in Banking in 2017. She was also Vice Chair of the Women's Business Council, which is part of the initiatives led out of the Government Equalities Office. Lynne is now a Board Member for West Bromwich Building Society. Lynne holds qualifications in Business, Finance and HR strategy from Harvard, Stanford and Leeds Metropolitan University. Lynne Atkin has over 30 years experience within HR in the energy industry and financial services

Michael Buerk

Michael is a veteran broadcaster, journalist, and TV presenter, and has been an ambassador since 2008. In his time supporting Action for Children, Michael has supported the charity in so many ways by appearing on TV shows such as Celebrity Mastermind (which he won!), hosting events and awards ceremonies, supporting corporate partnerships, attending Parliamentary receptions, and visiting our services.

Michael Long

  • Reverend Dr Michael Long Joined the Board of Trustees at Action for Children in July 2020.
Mike is the Superintendent Minister of the Newham and Forest Circuits in East London. He has served in a variety of church appointments in London, Surrey and North Wales for 35 years. He is a member of the Methodist Church's Connexional Council (its trustee body) and also serves on the Methodist Church's Joint Advisory Committee on the Ethics of Investment.

Mike Knight - CHRO

Mike has been our Chief People Officer since 2018, responsible for the entire people function across Action for Children. Mike joined Action for Children in October 2015, as HR Director, responsible for the Business Partners, People Policies, Reward, Wellbeing and Payroll. In 2018, the People function was brought together, and Mike assumed additional responsibility for the recruitment, learning and organisational development parts of the people function. Mike has worked in human resources roles across the public sector over the past 25 years, in several London local authorities, including Camden Council when it was Council of the Year (2002), central government, a policing agency and the NHS. Mike is married to Jing and they have a young son, Sebastian. Mike is Chief People Officer at Action for Children.

Navin Kaul

Navin Kaul joined the Board of Trustees at Action for Children in February 2024. Navin is a qualified chartered accountant and a Partner at EY. He started his career in audit, moved in to Corporate Finance in 1995 and focussed on growing the Consulting business since 2020. Navin has extensive experience of advising corporates and private equity clients on acquisitions, disposals, IPOs and fund raisings. Navin is the Private Equity Leader for the EMEIA Consulting business of EY and is also the Acquisitions Leader for the Consulting practice and responsible for acquisitions made by the firm across EMEIA. He is former co-optee of AfC Audit & Risk Committee and joined AfCD BoD in May 2020. Navin is married and has two children, besides spending time with his family, his other interests include golf and photography. Navin Kaul is a qualified chartered accountant and Partner at EY

Necia Lewis

Necia oversees projects including women's refuges and independent domestic violence advisors.

Neville Shulman

Neville has been a passionate and committed supporter for more than 20 years. He has raised many hundreds of thousands of pounds for us during that time. He is an Honorary Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society, Fellow of the Explorers Club of New York, and Board Member of the Scientific Exploration Society. Neville is an explorer, mountaineer and writer and has written many books on his exploits with his latest book being a U.S. novel titled - 'You are what you are'. He works in film, theatre and the Arts.

Paul Bulpin

Paul has been involved in Rotary for over 20 years and managed project grants across South Wales on behalf of the Rotary Foundation

Paul Renney

As a consultant solicitor for Keystone Law, Paul supported us for a number of years. He served on the Board of Byte Night (now Boycott Your Bed), our largest fundraising event. His expertise has helped the event raise over £14 million.

Peter Curran - CFO

Peter Curran joined the Board of Trustees at Action for Children in February 2021. He hails from Cardiff and is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy (CIPFA), with an Economics degree from Aberystwyth University and an Honorary Fellow of The Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama. Peter started his career as a trainee accountant at Cardiff City Council. He has recently retired as the Chief Finance Officer for the South Wales Police & Crime Commissioner. Prior to this, he was Director of Finance & Corporate Services at Sport Wales. Previous roles have included Director of Finance at Aberystwyth University, Vice Principal (Resources) at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, and Assistant Director of Finance at Cardiff Metropolitan. Peter has held a number of non-executive positions and is currently a Trustee of National Youth Arts Wales Chairing its Finance Sub-Committee and a non-executive Director of Taff Housing Association Chairing its Audit & Risk Committee. He is also an independent member of the Audit & Risk Committee of Y Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol, which is the body responsible for promoting teaching and research in universities through the medium of Welsh. Peter Curran has recently retired as the Chief Finance Officer for the South Wales Police & Crime Commissioner

Richard Bryars

Richard has spent most of his career leading strategy, planning, and new business development at some of the UK's largest mutuals, including the Co-operative Group and John Lewis Partnership. Richard is passionate about exploring how socially-focused organisations manage the tensions between profit and purpose. He has developed strategies to maximise the benefits of employee ownership at John Lewis and reinvented the role of the Co-op in the 21st century. Richard has also supported the development of new ventures, including the John Lewis Financial Services business and an online pharmacy for the Co-op. Having previously served as Chair of Trustees at the international development charity, Childreach, Richard joined Action for Children in 2022. He leads the strategy, impact, business planning, risk, and business improvement teams. Away from work, Richard is married with two boys and two cats - all of whom enjoy dropping into Teams calls to say hello! Richard also sits on the Board of Trustees of the New Economics Foundation.

Ronnie Archer-Morgan

Ronnie is an antiques expert and Antiques Roadshow presenter. He was in the care of Action for Children, previously known as National Children's Home, between 1950 and 1955. Rt Hon Lord Jack McConnell

Lord Jack McConnell was First Minister of Scotland from 2001-2007 and joined the UK House of Lords in 2010. He is Chair of the McConnell International Foundation and Chancellor of the University of Stirling. When he was Education Minister and First Minister, Jack supported many Action for Children campaigns and events including our annual event at the Edinburgh Festival. He is engaged in peacebuilding and educational development in several countries. He is a passionate campaigner against child abuse and neglect and support for vulnerable teenagers.

Sarika Patel

Job Titles:

Sarika Patel has been Chair of the Board of Trustees at Action for Children since 2019. She is a business leader with nearly 30 years of public, private organisational experience. She is a Chartered Accountant and a Chartered Marketer. She is also a graduate in law. Her experience includes leadership of multi-sited teams, corporate development, and finance. Her skills include acquiring, integrating and developing businesses, as well as company restructuring and turnaround. Sarika has a number of Non-Executive positions in her portfolio. She is currently Chairwoman of the Aberdeen Equity Investment Trust and the Board of the Office for Nuclear Regulation, where she also chairs the Audit, Risk, and Assurance committee. Sarika is a Non-Executive Director and chairs the Audit committee at SEEIT plc, and Foresight Sustainable Forestry Co plc. Her previous non-exec roles include Vice Chair of Centrepoint, Commissioner at the Gambling Commission, Imperial Healthcare Trust, and member of the Court, University of Greenwich. Sharon Horgan

Sharon is an actor, writer, director and producer. She consistently supports our integrated national campaigns and annual events such as Secret Santa and Boycott Your Bed. She has also supported many of our crisis appeals, including our Coronavirus appeal in 2020. Sharon regularly advocates our work by supporting our consumer PR activities. See more here.

Sian Lloyd

Sian is a TV weather presenter and has supported us since the early ‘90s. Over the years, Sian has done so much to support our work, by visiting many services, participating in our campaigns, and attending various events. Sir Iain Livingstone

Sir Iain Livingstone is a former Chief Constable of Police Scotland. He joined the Lothian and Borders Police as Constable in 1992 and led several major investigations and operations throughout his career. As Chief Constable, he led the national Service through the Covid pandemic, the COP26 Summit, and events following the death of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. In 2015, he was awarded the Queen's Police Medal and was knighted in June 2022 for his services to policing and the public. Sir Iain brings his expertise to support Action for Children's work with children who are protected or supported by the police, and those involved in the criminal justice system.

Sister Eluned Williams

Sister Eluned worked with us for 44 years, 25 of which she spent managing Ardwyn Children's Home in Dinas Powys. She received an MBE for services to children and young people. After her retirement, she continued as an Action for Children Ambassador. She is warmly remembered by all those whose lives she touched.

Steve Bell joined the Board of Trustees at Action for Children in November 2020. Steve Chairs our Audit & Risk Committee. Steve was the first of his extended family to attend university. He read law at Durham and qualified as a chartered accountant. He then spent 33 years with accounting firm EY in a variety of roles. He was a leader for the European Financial Services consulting business, and a Partner at EY from 1999 until 2020. Steve is an Independent Member of the Real Time Gross Settlement/CHAPS Board at the Bank of England. Steve is now using his experience to help charities working with young people in the UK. He is Chairman of the board of trustees for the Country Trust, a national educational charity. His personal fundraising includes hiking in the Sahara and running the London Marathon. His interests include golf, watching sport (particularly football and cricket) and hiking. Steve Bell was a Partner at EY from 1999 until retiring in 2020
