Dr. Abraham George - Founder

Job Titles:
  • Founder
  • Member of the Leadership Team
  • Principal
In 1995, I returned to India with the goal of reducing the injustices and inequalities I had observed during my military service in my youth. I started The George Foundation (TGF), a non-profit organization based in Bangalore, India, dedicated to the welfare of economically and socially disadvantaged people. In 1997, I established Shanti Bhavan as a reflection of my vision for alleviating poverty and bringing about social justice. In addition to Shanti Bhavan, The George Foundation supports several other initiatives dedicated to poverty alleviation, education, health, and empowerment of women, such as community development projects in housing, vocational training, and the provision of safe drinking water; social entrepreneurship programs employing poor women in farming projects; and the Baldev Medical & Community Center that serves 17 villages and over 16,000 people. My work in the field of environmental health led to the removal of lead from gasoline throughout India in April 2000 and the creation of the National Referral Centre for Lead Poisoning in India. My belief in promoting democratic institutions and values led to the establishment of the Indian Institute of Journalism & New Media, Bangalore, where I serve as president. My career spans the finance and entrepreneurial sectors with senior leadership positions at Chemical Bank and Credit Suisse First Boston. I also founded Multinational Computer Models, Inc. (MCM), which enabled large multinational corporations to better deal with their international financial risks through the use of computerized systems. I have served on the boards of Human Rights Watch, International Center for Journalists, and Vellore Christian Medical College, among others. I am the recipient of several awards, including Hind Ratna, presented by the former Prime Minister of India, I. K. Gujral. I attended New York University's Stern School of Business where I studied developmental economics and finance and received both my master's and doctoral degrees from the university.

Gabrielle Mahesh

Job Titles:
  • Associate
  • Member of the India Team
  • Vice Principal
I first became involved with Shanti Bhavan in the summer of 2019 as a volunteer teacher after hearing about the organization from my aunt. My time on campus was one of great joy and meaningful work. Upon returning home, I took on the role of Academic Administrator for the 2020-2021 school year, taking a leave of absence from my full-time job to do so. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, I was unable to return to campus; however, I continued my work with Shanti Bhavan from the United States. In 2022, I accepted a full-time position with Shanti Bhavan as its Associate Vice Principal.

Giulia Barresi

Job Titles:
  • UK Chapter Board Member
Italian born and bred, I am based in London, but half of my heart is in India. My background is in consumer insights and strategy, and I am part of the brand team at Virgin. I first heard of the amazing work of Shanti Bhavan watching the documentary Daughters of Destiny. Like many, I was immediately struck by the impact the school has on its students through its innovative teaching model and the values it instills in the kids. I've always had a passion for social impact and education, having previously done a lot of volunteering and mentoring work with students in Asia on international business and strategy. I am beyond excited to contribute to the UK Chapter's growth through outreach and donor engagement.

Gowri Manoharan - COO

Job Titles:
  • Chief Administrative Officer
  • Director of Operations
I came across the Daughters of Destiny documentary by chance on a rainy spring afternoon and was mesmerized by the story. I knew I wanted to work with this amazing organization right away. While I started my post-secondary journey studying Psychology, I had eventually pivoted to Information Technology which led me to a successful career with the Canadian Public Service. However, after learning about the wonderful work being done at Shanti Bhavan, I knew this was the place for me. Although I live in Canada at present, my journey started in Sri Lanka and wound its way through Nigeria before arriving here. I have two children - a son and a daughter - who both keep me on my toes. I enjoy hiking, reading, and snorkeling. Happiness and fulfillment to me are family and meaningful work; my role at Shanti Bhavan allows me both.

Jay Singadia

Job Titles:
  • UK Chapter Chair
My involvement with Shanti Bhavan started in 2018-2019 and I became a member of the board soon after. I possess 11 years of experience in investment banking gained working with Goldman Sachs across the globe, including London, Bangalore, and Warsaw. Raised in Milton Keynes, I enjoy staying active and playing sports such as Football, Cricket, and Golf. During my time as a volunteer at Shanti Bhavan, I built strong connections with the students and staff. I led multiple boys' leadership sessions to help provide guidance and advice. Most importantly, I was most known for my time spent on the football pitch with all the boys day in and day out. Following my time at Shanti Bhavan, I spent three years teaching English in Bangkok, and am now currently back in the UK. Over the last year, I have been spearheading the creation of the UK chapter and all of my hard work has finally come to fruition. I look forward to staying connected to Shanti Bhavan and giving back to the school through this chapter, as my time on campus was a pivotal moment in my career and life.

Jessica Kulakowski

Job Titles:
  • Director
  • Member of the Australia Team
After watching the Netflix documentary Daughters of Destiny, I was overwhelmingly inspired and started learning more about how I could help Shanti Bhavan Children's Project continue the incredible work they do for disadvantaged children in India. With previous career experience in sales, marketing and social work (quite the combo), I felt like I needed-and could do more-to help. While on maternity leave, I founded Rugs For Good, a social enterprise that raises money to donate to Shanti Bhavan. That started in 2019 and is still going strong, and I cannot wait to expand on my efforts to support Shanti Bhavan within the Australian chapter.

Jessica Ruiz

Job Titles:
  • Administrative Associate
  • Member of the US Team
In the summer of 2022, I began an incredible journey with Shanti Bhavan by stepping into the role of On-Site Administrator for the upcoming academic year. This opportunity allowed me to spend moments of joy and learning with the children, staff, and volunteers. I embraced the privilege of working together to achieve our shared dreams and goals.

Joseph Jeyanth

Job Titles:
  • Member of the India Team
  • Senior Manager of Corporate Partnerships
I started with Shanti Bhavan in 2015 as a Community Relations Manager. After a brief sabbatical, I returned in 2019 as the Senior Manager of Corporate Partnerships. I primarily work on the development, management, and delivery of Shanti Bhavan's corporate fundraising program. I hold 15 years of relevant experience in corporate, educational, and nonprofit environments. My expertise is in implementing programs to improve organization operations. I hold a Bachelor in Engineering, an MBA, and a second Master's degree specializing in Human Services. Outside of my work for Shanti Bhavan, I love to travel, work on green home renovations, and volunteer at local animal shelters.

Kate London

Job Titles:
  • Administrative Manager
  • Member of the US Team
I spent the early years of my career honing my organizational and critical thinking skills as an executive administrator in fields ranging from civil service to legal offices. I began my career in Canada, where I was raised, and have since become a US citizen. Early in 2011, during my transition to living in the United States, I met Ajit George, who told me all about his touching work with Shanti Bhavan. He explained how the financial downturn had affected their funding and how much he wished he could hire an administrator to assist in his work. Because the school's mission touched my heart, I was happy to offer my administrative talents as a volunteer. Throughout the years, I assisted with website management, events, administration, newsletters, finances, and much more. As the school's supporter base grew, I was eventually brought on as a full-time staff member. Now I am happy to focus my attention on sponsorships, administration, and communications.

Kavita Jacobs

Job Titles:
  • UK Chapter Board Member
From North America to Europe to Asia, I have worked for countless companies in the finance industry, most recently working for Natixis and now with Investec. My work especially focuses on social impact in both ED Tech and Sports ED Tech. After many global work experiences, I decided to put it all on hold and immersed myself in teaching economics at Shanti Bhavan in the summer of 2019. It was during my time there at the school that I absolutely fell in love with the students and everything the school stands for.

Kristina Johnson

Job Titles:
  • Member of the US Team
  • Manager of Alumni Relations
I started working for Shani Bhavan in 2019 after volunteering as a teacher on campus for two months. Once I left campus at the end of my teaching tenure, I knew my life would never be the same. When I was approached to interview for this role, I took a leap of faith and went for it. And boy, I'm glad I did! I work with Shanti Bhavan graduates that are now in college or are working professionals. I secure, plan, and oversee workshops and programs to develop our alumni. I provide career and higher studies support for our graduates. I help our US-based college students with anything they might need, such as moving into dorms, finding medical and dental care, and understanding work restrictions around their visas. I measure success by the relationships I am able to build with young people and the meaningful growth I am able to help them achieve. If I can make just one child's day better-whether helping them feel capable when balancing an equation or ensuring they feel cared for even when they've made a mistake-then my day has had purpose. It's all about impact. One of my favorite memories from Shanti Bhavan was teaching the simple melody "Heart and Soul" to one of my 5th-grade students. At the time, he was a novice pianist and had never played a duet. He practiced his part of the song for a week. The night before I left campus, he was ready to play the song with me, and we did! When I returned to campus three years later, I was floored by his musical ability. He's currently one of the school's best piano players and plays the school song during Saturday assembly. Originally from Louisiana, this "ragin' Cajun" now resides in Virginia! I live near the beach with my wonderful husband and our two pets, Bodhi and Utah (Point Break … if you know, you know). I'm a former math teacher. I hold a Master of Education degree and taught mathematics to grades 6 through 8 for a decade before coming to Shanti Bhavan in 2019.

Nicola Rivis

Job Titles:
  • UK Chapter Board Member
I volunteered at Shanti Bhavan in 2018 and 2020 and it changed my life. The whole ethos of Shanti Bhavan captured my heart when I first watched The Daughters of Destiny in 2017, and I literally submitted my application to be a volunteer the following day. I am beyond proud and excited to be involved in the UK Chapter and loving the fact I am still able to contribute to Shanti Bhavan from afar.

Nikki Dhillon

Job Titles:
  • Member of the Canada Team
  • Co - Director, Canada Chapter
As co-director of Shanti Bhavan Canada, I work with volunteers and chairpersons to ensure that Shanti Bhavan establishes a presence in Canada. I also assist alumni and graduates in exploring opportunities to study in Canada. I also work to ensure that the Chapter is aligned with Shanti Bhavan in its values and objectives. I am a teacher in the Peel District School Board, where I teach sciences, yoga, and leadership skills to the students.

Preema Patel

Job Titles:
  • UK Chapter Board Member
  • UK Chapter Vice Chair
I am an in-house employment lawyer based in London. When I am not working, I enjoy spending time with family and friends, cooking, travelling, yoga and following motorsports. I first learnt about Shanti Bhavan through the Netflix documentary Daughters of Destiny. After seeing the inspiring children at Shanti Bhavan and the work of the school, I became a volunteer in April 2018, and again visited the campus for graduation in June 2018. Since spending time on campus, I have remained connected to Shanti Bhavan in various ways over the last few years. I am delighted to be able to join the UK Chapter to make a bigger impact and introduce Shanti Bhavan to a broader audience in the UK.

Renee Knipe

Job Titles:
  • Member of the US Team
  • Digital Manager
My day typically begins and ends in front of my computer. I'm responsible for nearly all of our digital content, from overseeing the website and maintaining our email accounts to editing, proofreading, and sometimes writing social media posts, newsletters, and more. I'm involved in all of our advertising and marketing, and if it's a piece of software that we use, it likely has my fingerprints on it. I also manage Human Resources for the US team. I grew up, studied, and spent most of my life in Michigan. My first big aspiration was to be a novelist, and then later a filmmaker; to those ends, I earned a Bachelor of Arts in Creative Writing and 90% of an associate's degree in Video Production. However, what I actually did to pay the bills was loss prevention and shrink analysis for a big box retailer. I began my career with Shanti Bhavan in 2015, doing part-time administrative work. In 2017, I accepted an offer to grow my role with the organization, which led me to Seattle and my current position. Since my work mainly involves the digital side of Shanti Bhavan, I have yet to visit the campus in India. However, since Seattle functions as our de facto North American headquarters, every so often, some of the students visiting or going to school in the US show up here, and when they do, I'm always there to help out. Whether it's recording video of Amrutha as she gives a speech or helping Vyshali and Thulasi set up their cell phone plans before venturing off to college, meeting the kids we help is always a powerful reminder of why we do what we do. Those moments aren't just my favorite work experiences - they're some of my favorite memories, period.

Shanti Jayanthasri

Job Titles:
  • Member of the India Team
  • Director of Development and Public Relations
I joined Shanti Bhavan in 2000 as Manager of Facilities and Administration. Prior to joining Shanti Bhavan, I did social work, counseling street children and helping poor patients who needed medical intervention. In my current role as the Director of Development and Public Relations, I serve as the guardian for the students through college and as they begin their careers. I have completed a Bachelors in English and hold diplomas in Child Guidance and Counseling and Women's Empowerment. I have two children and four grandchildren.

Sophy James

Job Titles:
  • Member of the US Team
  • Volunteer Services Associate
As the Volunteer Services Associate, I complete the first round of interviews with all volunteer applicants and also play a role in the final volunteer selection process. I love this role, as I get to share what I love about Shanti Bhavan with so many people who are also interested in the Shanti Bhavan mission! I first volunteered for Shanti Bhavan in 2014, and it quickly became my favorite place in the world. Since then, I have been back a multitude of times and encourage all applicants to consider becoming multiple-time volunteers, as repeated exposure to campus really helps to form meaningful connections with the students, teachers, and volunteers. Originally a teacher, I received my BS in Elementary Education from Florida State University and my MPhil in Education from the University of Cambridge. Given my background, I am a huge advocate of using education as a tool for poverty alleviation. I grew up in a military family, so I am kind of "from all over the place," but I currently live in Austin, Texas, and work as a Program Manager for a technology company. I enjoy all of the outdoor activities that Austin has to offer with my dog, Tally.

I am a liaison librarian at Seneca College. I first learned about Shanti Bhavan through the Netflix documentary Daughters of Destiny. In my current position, I directly work with Shanti Bhavan alumni who are interested in pursuing post-secondary education in Canada. What I find the most rewarding is providing guidance and support to Shanti Bhavan alumni in their educational and professional endeavours.
