NBI commenced fractionation operations in the late 1960's as part of the local blood transfusion service, the then Natal Blood Transfusion Service (NBTS), which was located in Prince Street, Durban. The fractionation operations expanded through the years as component therapy advanced. In March 1994, NBI was incorporated as an independent, non-profit company under the name Natal Bioproducts Institute, with a staff complement of 62 employees.
