Cary Hodges

Job Titles:

  • Volunteer Assistant Coach
Cary Hodges returned to the Roadrunners' coaching staff in 2018 and is set to begin his third season of his second stay with the Metropolitan State University of Denver tennis program. He helped the Roadrunners' women's team to fifth place and the men to seventh at the Pacific West Conference Tournament in MSU Denver's first season in the league as an affiliate member. Hodges helped MSU Denver compile dual records of 6-4 for the women and 3-4 for the men before the 2019-20 season was cut short due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Three Roadrunners men were ranked in the final regional poll (Daniel Llorente, No. 9; Mateo Besada, No. 13; Alejandro Martinez-Morilla, No. 15), while two MSU Denver women were also regionally ranked (Brooklyn Ross, No. 6; Tabitha Porter, No. 9). The women received votes in the final NCAA Division II poll, while Ross earned regional women's rookie of the year and Besada was named regional men's most improved senior player. In his first season on the staff of Josh Graetz, Hodges helped the MSU Denver women to a third straight Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference regular-season title and a 13-10 overall record, while the Roadrunners' men compiled a 9-8 record. Both teams narrowly missed qualifying for the NCAA Tournament. Hodges was previously on the Roadrunners' staff as an assistant coach for four years, through the 2015-16 season. He is currently the Director of Racquet Sports at Arapahoe Tennis Club and has held that position since 2005. In 2014-15, he helped the Roadrunners men reach the RMAC championship match and post a 14-10 record. The women's team finished third in the RMAC. The men's team was ranked as high as 46th in NCAA Division II and Graetz, then a sophomore, finished the year ranked No. 44 in singles after going 21-7 as the No. 1 player and earning All-RMAC first team. The men's squad earned wins over two nationally-ranked teams during the season. Hodges also helped coach the men's and women's RMAC freshmen of the year in Calum Hayes and Courtney Wright. In 2013-14, Hodges helped guide the men's team to a 12-11 record, including 3-2 in the RMAC. The women's team, which featured five freshmen, had a 4-20 record, including 0-5 in the RMAC. Hodges helped coach the RMAC men's and women's freshmen of the year as Graetz took home the honors on the men's side and Wanda Holopainen did so for the women. Graetz finished the season ranked No. 49 in NCAA Division II and broke the school record for wins in a season and consecutive wins at No. 1 singles, going 24-7. Holopainen's sister Naomi, who missed most of the spring with an injury, won the Fall ITA South Central Region singles championship. In his first season, Hodges assisted Beck Meares in her final season as head coach in 2012-13. The women's team went 14-14 overall and 4-1 in the RMAC, narrowly missing the NCAA Tournament. The men's team went 12-16 overall and 2-3 in the RMAC. Prior to his time with Arapahoe Tennis Club, Hodges was a staff professional at Colorado Athletic Club Monaco for over five years after spending three years as a high school tennis coach. He coached D'Evelyn High School's boys' team in 1997 and the Pueblo Centennial boys and girls teams for two seasons, 1995 and 1996. Hodges earned his bachelor's degree from Colorado State University-Pueblo in sociology and political science, graduating cum laude. He was a three-time Colorado Athletic Conference singles and doubles champion and was a two-time academic all-conference honoree. A native of Pueblo, Colo., Hodges is a certified tennis professional from the United States Professional Tennis Association and serves as the Intermountain Division regional vice president. He and his wife Jamie have a son, Caleb.

The trend continued after the program became affiliate members of the Pacific West Conference, and Graetz took his teams to even greater heights in 2022-23. The Roadrunners' men reached a program-best No. 25 in the national rankings on March 22, and both teams were ranked No. 36 on March 8. That was the Roadrunners women's team's highest ranking since being No. 28 two years earlier. It is believed to be the first time that both programs have been in the national rankings at the same time since the final rankings of the 2001-02 season. The men finished 15-5 overall after dubiously receiving only the No. 6 seed to the PacWest Tournament, while the women finished 14-10 after receiving the No. 9 seed to the PacWest Tournament and winning its first-round matchup. The men were ranked No. 40 in the final poll of the season, with Jeanloup Auzias ranked No. 54 in singles. The women had the doubles team of Isabel Heras and Kinsey Fields finish No. 38 in the final rankings. Auzias was All-PacWest first team in singles, newcomer Juho Kantola was All-PacWest third team in singles and second team in doubles with partner David Kijak, and Carlos Pinedo was All-PacWest third team in singles. Both teams also earned the ITA West Region Community Service Award. In 2021-22, the Roadrunners' men's team was the top-ranked team that didn't make the field for the NCAA Division II West Regional after going 14-5 overall. MSU Denver was seeded seventh for the PacWest Tournament, despite being fourth in the West Region rankings (the PacWest and West Region are both up of the exact same teams) and finished seventh at the tournament, despite pushing 43rd-ranked Biola (Calif.) in a 4-3 consolation bracket defeat. Auzias developed from the team's No. 6 singles player as a freshman to No. 1 as a sophomore, and he finished the season ranked 47th in Division II in singles. Auzias earned All-PacWest second team in singles, while Carlos Pinedo was All-PacWest third team in singles. Meanwhile, brothers Billy and Jack McDermott earned All-PacWest third team in doubles. The Roadrunners were ranked 64th in the final ITA poll of the season. The MSU Denver women were hit with multiple late-season injuries that derailed their postseason hopes, yet still finished a solid 12-10. True freshman Ava Neuburger-Higby earned All-PacWest second team in doubles, and she and partner Heras were named All-PacWest third team in doubles. After a year as an independent program, Graetz guided MSU Denver into the rugged PacWest as an affiliate member in 2020-21, and the Roadrunners made an immediate impression, particularly on the women's side. The MSU Denver women finished fifth at the PacWest Tournament, narrowly missing a bid to the NCAA West Regional Tournament, after entering play as the No. 9 seed. As a team, the women finished with the program's highest national ranking ever, at No. 28, while Brooklyn Ross was ranked 49th in singles and teamed with Heras to be ranked 15th nationally in doubles. Ross was the PacWest Freshman of the Year and All-PacWest second team, Ross/Heras were All-PacWest second team, and Helena Steenberg was All-PacWest third team in singles. Steenberg was named the ITA West Region's Most Improved Senior Player.

Kinsey Fields joined the MSU Denver coaching staff in January, 2024. Fields/Heras was 15-7 for the season, including 12-6 at No. 1. The duo was ranked No. 18 in the March 8 rankings, peaked at No. 15 on March 15 and was eventually No. 38 in the final rankings. Fields was also 11-12 in singles, including 1-0 at No. 1. She played primarily at No. 3, compiling a 5-5 record. Before MSU Denver, she compiled career records of 21-11 in singles and 46-22 in doubles while competing for Washburn (Kan.). She was ranked No. 29 nationally in doubles with partner Maja Jung in 2021-22. She clinched two regional matches to help the Ichabods to national quarterfinals of the NCAA Division II Tournament. In high school, she won state titles as a freshman and sophomore and was a state finalist as a junior, then placed fifth in singles as a senior at Edmond (Okla.) North. She was an all-state selection as a senior. In doubles, she had one runner-up and two third-place finishes at state tournament.
