Adrienne Cain joined the Institute on August 1, 2016 as Assistant Director. As part of the position, Adrienne was also named Secretary/Treasurer of the Texas Oral History Association (TOHA) and holds the rank of Lecturer on the Baylor University faculty. Adrienne came to Baylor from the Houston Public Library, where she served as the Oral History and Media Librarian for the Houston Metropolitan Research Center (HMRC). In that capacity, she facilitated access to a collection of over 1,500 oral histories through organizing, arranging, describing, transcribing, digitizing, and developing policies and procedures. Prior to joining HMRC, she worked as the Oral History Librarian for the African-American Library at the Gregory School, where she reorganized their collection and significantly increased awareness of the collection along with the amount and quality of the recordings. Due to these efforts, TOHA recognized the Gregory School in 2014 with its Mary Faye Barnes Award for Excellence in Community Oral History.
Adrienne was introduced to the world of oral history while serving as an intern in NASA's Johnson Space Center History Office. She joined TOHA in 2013 and began immediately making contributions. In addition to receiving the TOHA community award in 2014, she attended the annual conference that year in Nacogdoches. In 2015, she presented a paper at the annual conference in Commerce and was elected a member of the Board of Directors. In 2016, she contributed to the annual conference in Waco by chairing a session and presenting the Hendrickson Award during the luncheon and served as a judge for the 2016 Texas History Day competition. Adrienne is also a member of the Oral History Association (OHA) and presented a paper at OHA's annual meeting in 2015 in Tampa, Florida. She also holds membership in the Society of Southwest Archivists, the Texas Library Association, and Archivists of the Houston Area.
Alan Steelman was a U. S. Congressman from Texas' 5th Congressional District, serving from 1973-1976. At age 29, he was the youngest member of Congress. TIME magazine listed him among the "200 Emerging Young National Leaders" in their 1974 special issue. In 1976 he ran for the U.S. Senate as a Republican and lost.

Chet Edwards was first elected to the U. S. Congress to represent Texas' 11th Congressional District in 1990, where he served until 2005; and then Texas' 17th Congressional District from 2005 until 2010. Prior to his time in the U. S. Congress, Chet's life of public service began in 1982 when he was elected the youngest Texas state senator when he was 31. Edwards served in the Texas senate until 1991.

Ed Lee Gossett represented Texas's 13th Congressional District beginning in 1939. In July 1951, Gossett resigned his congressional office and resumed private practice as the general attorney for the Texas Southwestern Bell Telephone Co., and also served as Judge of Criminal District Court in Dallas, Texas.
The Edmund L. Nichols papers encompass the government career of Ed Nichols, including his service with the Texas Department of Agriculture, the U.S. Department of Agriculture, and diplomatic service abroad as a U.S. agricultural counselor in several European countries.

Fowler West became a staff assistant to Congressman W. R. Poage in 1963. From 1965 to 1969, he was on the professional staff of the House Committee on Agriculture. Then in 1969 and until 1971, he served as Congressman Poage's Chief of Staff.
In 1971, West returned to the House Committee on Agriculture as a staff consultant where he served as a legislative professional. He was promoted to Staff Director of the Committee in 1973 and served under Committee Chairmen W. R. Poage, 1973-1974; Thomas S. Foley, 1975-1980; and Kika de la Garza, 1981-1982.
President Ronald Reagan appointed Fowler West a Commissioner of the Commodity Futures Trading Commission in 1982.

Hyde Murray worked for the Office of General Counsel, U. S. Department of Agriculture, for 10 months in 1958 before he joined the staff of the House Committee on Agriculture. There he served more than 20 years as minority counsel on the House Agriculture Committee and almost a decade as counsel to the Minority Leader.

William R. Smith, Sr. was elected to the U. S. Congress in 1903 to represent Texas' 16th Congressional District and served until 1917. Upon leaving Congress, President Wilson appointed Smith U. S. District Judge for the Western District of Texas.
