Al Cavalli

Al Cavalli is senior consultant for Carter Research, a strategic advisory and operations consulting firm to the education industry. In addition to his work with us, Al provides education, operations, financial consulting and CEO mentoring for Scholars' Promise International and the Metropolitan Classical Charter School. Al is an experienced education and healthcare professional who has been President of the Independence Mission Schools, an independent organization that oversees the operations of 16 Catholic elementary schools, CEO of the Lehigh Valley Academy Regional Charter School, CEO/President of the Shawnee Academy and the Beacon School a residential and day school program and the Vice President of Operations for Wordsworth Human Services. Al received a bachelor degree from St. Joseph's University in Philadelphia in accounting and a Masters of Science in Administration from West Chester University. He has four children: Aldo, Christopher, Rita, and Maria and is married to Rita Fitzpatrick.

Carol A. Cary

Carol Cary is a senior consultant with Carter Research, a strategic advisory and operations consulting firm to the education industry. After ten years in business, Carol's career in educational leadership included work in both Catholic and public education-suburban and urban-as Superintendent of Schools. Carol's success as a school leader is attributed to her collaborative style of leadership and her commitment to innovative practices. Most recently Carol served as Superintendent of Schools at Marple Newtown School District and as both Superintendent and Director of Curriulum and Instruction for the Archdiocese of Philadelphia. Carol received her master's degree in School Administration in from North Carolina State University and her doctoral degree in Educational Leadership from Immaculata University. She is a licensed superintendent in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Carol is the mother of three sons, Justin, Jordan, and Jared and is married to Jack Cary, a successful technology design engineer.

Charles Evans Hughes

Charles Hughes is a senior consultant at Carter Research, a professional services firm that provides strategy, new business development, implementation support, and operations consulting to the education industry. Most recently Chuck was the Director of Talent Management for the Archdiocese of Philadelphia's Office of Catholic Education. He lead this ground-breaking effort in partnership with Faith in the Future, overseeing talent development, succession planning, and recruitment across 17 high schools and four schools of special education in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia. Chuck is a skilled leader who has been consistently in the vanguard of educational reform work. His leadership experiences include overseas schools, rural, and urban schools. His areas of expertise include: K-12 school leadership, leading and building collaborative teams, assessing and affecting positive organizational culture, and leading the work of attracting, developing and retaining talented employees and senior leaders. Chuck's experience have been shaped by work in urban school turnaround efforts, charter school start-up, and success in the nimble work environment demanded by entrepreneurial education ventures. Chuck is a proud Big Ten University product. He received his bachelor degree from The Universtiy of Minnesota and his masters degree from the University of Iowa. He is in love with his wife, Mary, of 38 years and has two adult daughters and three grandchildren. He is actively pursuing the title of "The Best Grandfather Ever!"

John E. Birney

Most recently John has been the Director of Business Development for GroupClique, a digital application that promotes networking and community engagement in Catholic schools. Previously, he was the President of Brother Rice High School, a Catholic all-boys high school in the state of Michigan sponsored by the Christian Brothers. Prior to his appointment as the head of school, John served as the director of technology, admissions director and alumni President. John has served on the board of directors for multiple Catholic organizations such as Kensington Academy, Brother Rice High School Chicago, Angels Place and St. Michael's Academy. In addition, John served on multiple administrative committees within the Christian Brothers network of schools. Across his educational career John taught secondary history, english & theology for 14 years receiving the coveted Facere et Docere award in 1985 and 1986. During his 12 years in private business, John was the co-founder of a private consulting firm that specialized in the implementation of business asset management software with a wide variety of clients throughout the midwest. After receiving a bachelor degree as a member of the Christian Brother Congregation from Lewis University in Romeoville, Illinois in 1979 in history, John received a masters degree in history from the University of Michigan and a masters degree in educational administration from the University of Phoenix. He is the father of two sons: John (29) and Patrick (26) and has been married for 35 years to Kathy Birney who has an extensive career as a corporate financial professional.

K. Marguerite Conley

K. Marguerite Conley is senior consultant for Carter Research, a strategic advisory and operations consulting firm to the education industry. Before joining Carter Research, Marguerite was Executive Director of the Consortium of Catholic Academies, providing management and operational oversight for four inner city elementary schools in the Archdiocese of Washington. Prior to leading the Consortium, Marguerite was the principal of Annunciation School in Washington, D.C. for eleven years. Before being named principal, she served as both assistant principal and middle school math teacher. She began her vocation as an educator at St. Peter's Inter-Parish School on Capitol Hill in 1991 teaching middle school math and Church history. Marguerite's expertise has led to partnerships with Boston College Roche Center for Catholic Education and Howard University Capstone Institute. She has worked with the United States Catholic Conference of Bishops, Archdiocese of Washington, American Federation for Children, and external groups on advocacy, strategic planning, and reauthorization of D.C.'s voucher program, the Opportunity Scholarship. Currently Marguerite is the Chair of the Board of Directors for Georgetown Visitation Preparatory School. She has served on the Archdiocesan Board of Education as well as many diocesan committees from curriculum to emergency preparedness. Marguerite received both a Master's degree in Education Administration and a Bachelor's degree in English from The Catholic University of America. She is a third generation Washingtonian.

Robert F. Shea

As the founder and current President of Shea Consulting Services, Bob has worked with schools, religious orders, and school systems throughout the United States, Europe, Australia, and Asia. Across his career, Bob has served as a Catholic high school teacher, Assistant Principal, Principal, and President. Bob holds degrees from La Salle University and the University of Notre Dame and has done post-graduate work at Villanova University, Texas Christian University and the London School of Economics. His articles and audio-tapes on various topics of leading change, culture, planning, and education have been published by the United States Catholic Conference, St. Mary's Press, Voice America Radio, and Business Week. Bob is a frequent presenter at national and regional convocations of various educational and fund-raising associations throughout the United States. He and his bride live in Dallas, Texas.

Across his career Casey has been CEO of Faith in the Future, president of National Heritage Academies, a charter school management company that operates just under 100 schools in nine states, president of CfBT USA-the U.S. affiliate of CfBT Education Trust-the head of global corporate social responsibility for Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, and the executive director of the Houghton Mifflin Harcourt Foundation. Casey is also the author of On Purpose: How Great School Cultures Form Strong Character published by Corwin Press/SAGE International and No Excuses: Lessons from 21 High-Performing, High Poverty Schools. His articles, essays, and columns have appeared in more than 180 newspapers and magazines, including, The Wall Street Journal, Chicago Tribune, New York Times, New York Post, Washington Times, Los Angeles Times, Investor's Business Daily, and Detroit News. After receiving a bachelor degree from St. John's College in Annapolis in philosophy and mathematics, Casey studied theology at Oxford University and philosophy at The Catholic University of America. He is the father of three daughters: Kirby (19), Casey (18), and Lucy (15) and married to Nancy Dubé, the former Canadian downhill ski champion and co-founder of both Home2US and 1GlobalMedia.

Todd F. Avis

Todd F. Avis is Program Director for Carter Research, a strategic advisory and operations consulting firm to the education industry. In addition Todd is president of Leelenau Education Group, an educational management company specializing in providing academic, financial, and growth strategies to proprietary schools. Todd has held numerous leadership roles in schools and companies committed to meeting the individual needs of students and providing parents with excellent educational opportunities for their children. At American Education Group, Todd served as Vice President of Education where he oversaw the development of curriculum and schools for students who learn differently. Todd was Director of School Quality and Vice President for Education at National Heritage Academies, one of the nation's largest education management organizations. His department supported 53 schools with 1,100 classrooms and 22.000 students throughout multiple states. In his time at both American Education Group and National Heritage Academies, Todd was an integral part of ensuring success during rapid company growth. Todd also has extensive experience in the trenches with many years serving children and parents as a teacher and administrator. He was principal of Vista Charter Academy and Headmaster of Hillsdale Academy, Hillsdale College's reform model elementary school. Todd also spent several years serving young men with dyslexia at The Gow School where he was a Teacher, Academic Coordinator, Teacher of Reconstructive Language, and Director of Admissions. Todd received his Bachelor of Arts in History from Hillsdale College and Master of Science in Educational Foundations from the State University College at Buffalo. He is the father of three adult sons Gabe, Mackie, and Elliot and is married to Sandy. He enjoys biking and spending time in beautiful northern Michigan.
