Mistra was founded after the Frankish conquest of the Peloponnese in 1205, while Sparta, a few miles to the east, in the rich valley of Lacedaemon, became the favorite residence of the Frankish princes. In 1249 William II of Villehardouin, Prince of Achaea, built a castle on a hill on the slopes of Mt. Taygetos which came to be known as Mistra. In 1259 Villehardouin was defeated and captured by John Paleologos, brother of the Byzantine emperor Michael VIII Paleologos, in the battle of Pelagonia in northern Greece.
