THE ROUND COMPANY - Key Persons

ALASTAIR MARRIOTT

Job Titles:
  • Choreographer
Alastair Marriott was born in 1968 in St Margaret's at Cliffe, Kent. Although he became aware of dance through the films of Gene Kelly and Fred Astaire, the spur to take dance lessons came from the son of a family friend who wanted to learn; Marriott went too. After all- round study at Deal Dance Centre, he joined The Royal Ballet School at the age of 11, and studied there for the next eight years. He joined the Company in 1988, was promoted to Soloist in 1992 and Principal Character Artist in 2003. While Marriott's first experiences of choreographing work came at White Lodge, it wasn't until he had established himself as a dance that he took it up again. He initially started choreographing as an experiment to try to convey the type of dance that he would want either to watch or to dance himself. He is very proud of his classical ballet heritage and uses this as a basis for developing a voice that will resonate with modern audiences while still presenting musical, artistic and technical challenges. Collaboration is very important to Marriott, and he has created all his work with the assistance of Jonathan Howells (Royal Ballet Soloist and Ballet Master). His ballets for the Company include Night Falls Fast (2001) for the Royal Ballet First Drafts, followed by Grey Garden (2002) for the Clore Studio Upstairs and Being and Having Been (2004) for the Linbury Studio Theatre. The premiere of his first main- stage piece for The Royal Ballet, Tanglewood, was in 2005; Children of Adam followed in 2007; sensorium in 2009; 2012 he choreographed Trespass in collaboration with Christopher Wheeldon for Metamorphosis: Titian and in 2014 he created Connectome. Marriott has kept a keen interest in The Royal Ballet School, adjudicating and choreographing for them regularly. His ballets for the school include Prelude and Fugue (2003), Schrumpf (2010) and Simple Symphony (2012) which was also performed by the John Cranko School in Stuttgart for their annual School performance. Marriott has a broad interest in other forms of entertainment and enjoys expanding his creative experiences away from the ballet stage. In 2009 he choreographed The Royal Opera's production of The Tsarina's Slippers, which was directed by Francesca Zambello and subsequently broadcast by the BBC. He has made pieces such as Kiss (2006), a pas de deux for Darcey Bussell for her own programme at Sadler's Wells, and The Red Shoes (2008), for her stage show 'Viva la Diva'. In 2010 he was asked by the Spanish designer Estella Archs to choreograph a fashion show as part of Paris Fashion Week, and he was also invited to make a pas de deux for The Royal Variety Performance featuring dancers from The Royal Ballet, with music sung by Russell Watson. His pas de deux are often requested for international galas, including the commissions Leider (2010) and Look west (2011) for Mara Galeazzi's charity galas at Sadler's Wells, and In the Hothouse created for the Queen's Diamond Jubilee Gala at The a Royal Opera House in 2012. In the same year he collaborated with Christopher Wheeldon on the extinguishing of the flame for the closing ceremony of the London Olympics. In 2015 he created a solo work Borrowed Light which was toured by The Royal Ballet to New York City and The Mikailovsky Ballet performed a pas de deux from Sensorium for the Russian TV show 'Bolshoi Ballet'. In 2019, Marriott created The Unknown Soldier for The Royal Ballet, which was nominated for an Olivier Award for Best New Dance Production. Marriott was presented with a medal for 25 years' service with The Royal Ballet in 2014. He has been nominated three times for Best Classical Choreography at the Critics' Circle Dance Awards and is currently nominated for A Golden Mask award in Russia for Zeitgeist a ballet he created for Natalia Osipova in 2015 for her Summer tour including London, New York City, St Petersburg and Moscow. In 2016 Alastair was the choreographer on After Miss Julie for Helen George, which was directed by Anthony Banks at the Yvonne Arnaud Theatre.

KIM BRANDSTRUP

Job Titles:

Kim Brandstrup studied Film at the University of Copenhagen and Choreography with Nina Fonaroff at London School of Contemporary Dance. He founded his own dance company, Arc, in 1985, forging a narrative style that owes more to his early cinematic training than to classical story ballet or to the kineticism of contemporary dance. Throughout his career, and at times at odds with current trends, he has sought a theatre of movement that is both powerful and subtle, creating poignant and suggestive narratives that are always intensely human and emotionally revealing. Brandstrup regularly choreographs for leading dance companies, including Royal Danish Ballet, Danish Dance Theatre, English National Ballet, New York City Ballet, Birmingham Royal Ballet, Royal Swedish Ballet, Rambert, Norwegian Ballet, Royal New Zealand Ballet and Les Grands Ballets Canadiens de Montréal. His opera and theatre choreography includes credits with the Metropolitan Opera, New York, English National Opera, Greek National Opera, the Barbican, Opera North, Thé tre du Ch telet and at the Bregenz, Glyndebourne and Vienna festivals. He was the winner of the 2016 Critics' Circle National Dance Award for Best Modern Choreography for Transfigured Night (Rambert), the 2010 Olivier Award for Best New Dance Production for Goldberg: The Rojo/Brandstrup Project (Royal Ballet) and 1990 Olivier Award for Outstanding Achievement in Dance for Orfeo (London Contemporary Dance Theatre).
