Amélie Legrand

Amélie graduated from the French Agronomy School of Dijon, with a specialisation in animal sciences. She also holds an MSc in Applied Animal Behaviour and Animal Welfare from the University of Edinburgh. During her training, she specialised in the welfare of dairy cattle and carried out work on preferences and usage of pasture by dairy cows at the University of British Columbia, Canada and on water cooling to reduce heat stress in dairy cattle at the University of Davis, California. She joined Compassion in 2008 as Research Officer and was appointed as Food Business Manager for France in 2009. Since then, she has been working with a wide range of French food companies to help them address farm animal welfare as a business issue, by offering them technical expertise, market insights and networking opportunities. Amélie is now Head of Research for the Food Business Team, coordinating our global technical team and the development of our science-based resources and tools, in support of our engagement work with the food industry.

Anaïs Gonzalez

Anaïs graduated from the French Agronomy School of Montpellier, specialising in animal farming systems. During her studies, she specialised in global animal welfare, working as a CSR project manager for two French retailers, mainly on their animal welfare policy. Anaïs has also worked for the French welfare NGO "OABA" and is passionate about improving the lives of farm animals as well as working collaboratively with the food industry. Anaïs joined Compassion in 2022 as Food Business Manager working on our labelling project, with a particular focus on the Étiquette Bien-Être Animal (AEBEA).

Bianca Furlotti

Bianca joined Compassion in 2018 as Junior Food Business Manager in Italy. Her main focus was working with food service companies, and now she also works with producers and retailers, to help them integrate higher animal welfare standards within their corporate strategies. Prior to joining Compassion, Bianca worked for an Italian charity called Mission Bambini, where she worked for the fundraising and corporate partnerships team. Passionate about sustainable food production and the environment, Bianca is determined to work with food companies not only to improve the welfare of the animals in their supply chains, but also to enhance the brand reputation of those committed to sustainability and environmental improvements too.

Bryony de Freitas

Bryony joined Compassion in 2017 in the Supporter Engagement Team with specific focus on community fundraising. Prior to joining Compassion Bryony worked in procurement and has good supply chain knowledge. As part of the Food Business team, Bryony works with global food service companies and retailers to help them implement policies to drive improvements in farm animal welfare across their supply chains. Bryony has grown up around the farming community and keeps her own small flock of sheep.

Catalina Eggers

Catalina Eggers joined the CIWF team as a Food Business Manager (EU) in October 2022. Before joining, she worked as a lawyer in Chile, assessing various industries such as mining, energy, real state, health related companies and the pork breeding industry on regulatory and environmental matters. Catalina recently completed her MSc in Environmental Policy and Regulation at the London School of Economics and holds a diploma in "Ethics, Protection and Animal Law" from University of Chile, which focused on the study of ethical dimensions of the human-animal relationship, animal law, animal protection policies and the scientific basis of animal welfare. In her role at Compassion, Catalina engages with food businesses to help them adopt and build upon commitments to improve welfare standards for farm animals. She feels passionate about dedicating her career to create a more ethical and sustainable food system.

Dan McAlpine

Daniel joined the CIWF team in December 2022 as a Senior Food Business Manager. He completed his MSc in Nutritional Epidemiology at Leeds Met in 2014 and has worked in the Technical and Process development teams of large multinationals such as Bakkavor.

Daniel Ryle

Daniel graduated with a BA in International studies in 2014. He then went on to study sustainable aquaculture at the University of St Andrews in 2017, graduating with an MSc in 2021. His end of course dissertation studied the feasibility of establishing regenerative integrated multi-trophic aquaculture production in the geographical context of protected coastal wetlands. Following this, Daniel worked for two months at a seabass and seabream hatchery in northern Spain. He then took on an internship in Switzerland, working at a perch and zander recirculating aquaculture hatchery, and associated recirculating grow out farms. Daniel also worked for a year on a flow-through rainbow trout farm on the River Test in Hampshire, as part of a 2-person team raising rainbow trout to a harvest size of 3kg. Daniel joined Compassion in August 2023, bringing knowledge and experience, as well as passion and drive, to help push the aquaculture industry to become more environmentally friendly, and more compassionate regarding animal welfare.

Dr Daniel Sanchez

Daniel completed his BSc in Biology in 2010 at the University of Valencia and a Masters in Science in Sustainable Aquaculture in 2011 at the University of Stirling, focusing on modelling the flood cycle using satellite images to identify aquaculture sites. Daniel did his PhD at the University of the West of Scotland focusing on the influence of dietary carotenoid on ornamental fish welfare, behaviour and colouration, in collaboration with an industrial partner. He has gained broad experience in aquaculture, firstly in research aquaculture and later in production planning at one of the biggest Mediterranean aquaculture companies. Daniel joined Compassion in February 2021 to use his extensive knowledge and experience to help improve the welfare of fish in food business.

Dr Eimear Murphy

Eimear has a degree in Psychology from the University College Dublin, which she followed up with an MSc in Applied Animal Behaviour and Animal Welfare from the University of Edinburgh. She then spent 14 years working as a researcher at various academic institutions across Europe, including a PhD on the assessment of emotion in pigs at Utrecht University. While Eimear has contributed to studies on transport in sheep, play in rats, social cognition in pigs, and the validity of animal research, much of her research career has been dedicated to the development of tasks to study emotion in farm and laboratory animals. Eimear joined Compassion in March 2022 to apply her skills in research to improve the welfare of animals farmed for food.

Dr Emma Tivey

Emma completed her BSc (Hons) in Neuroscience in 2016, following which she worked as a sustainability consultant at FAI Farms carrying out R&D and consultancy projects on animal welfare and environmental sustainability across supply chains. She completed her PhD on positive welfare in lab animals at the University of Edinburgh in 2022, researching sex differences in the neural and behavioural correlates of positive affective states in rats. Before joining Compassion, Emma worked as a farm animal welfare policy advisor for Defra, developing financial incentives for farmers to improve welfare on their farms and she was the dairy cattle welfare lead for the department. Emma is particularly passionate about the link between animal welfare and environmental sustainability and has joined Compassion as Research Manager for China.

Dr Justine Pearce

Justine is our Project Manager for free farrowing, leading and developing a project to facilitate the transition from farrowing crates to free-farrowing systems for sows in the UK. Justine completed her BSc (Hons) in Equine Science in 2014, MSc in Animal Behaviour in 2016, and a PhD on meat chickens in 2022. Her PhD research was interdisciplinary, focusing on the collaboration between animal behaviour and welfare science, animal biomechanics and artificial intelligence. Justine has experience in research, policy, project management and stakeholder engagement through working in research, NGO and civil society sectors. Justine is passionate about using scientific evidence to support positive change for animal welfare particularly through the development of resources to increase awareness, encourage cross-sector collaboration and facilitate systemic change.

Dr Lucille Bellegarde

Lucille has an MSc from AgroParisTech (France) in Animal Science and Agronomy and a PhD from the University of Edinburgh in Applied Ethology. During her studies, Lucille specialised in the emotional states of sheep and goats, and more specifically on how individual animals perceive emotions in other flock members. Lucille was also involved in developing new methods for the study of animals' emotions. Lucille joined Compassion in 2017 as Food Business Manager for France, with a particular focus on Food Service companies.

Dr Matt Baron

Matt is our Food Business Manager focussing on the welfare and humane slaughter of farmed fish. He completed his BSc in Marine Biology in 2004, Research Master's in Applied Fish Biology in 2006, and a PhD in Fish Welfare in 2014. Matt has held several academic, industry and consultancy roles, combining 15+ years' experience in fish physiology and welfare to bring to this current role. Matt's research work has been instrumental in reducing the numbers of live fish used in academia and industry, in-line with the 3Rs (Replacement, Reduction, Refinement) principles. Matt shares a particular passion for the welfare of fish during live transport and has worked closely with fish producers to implement ethical transportation methods to improve the welfare of fish during transport to and from farms

Dr. Ana Martos Martinez Caja

Ana graduated in Veterinary Medicine from the University of Cordoba (Spain) in 2006. After five years working as a small animal veterinarian, she reoriented her career towards animal research. In 2013, she enrolled in the MSc in Applied Animal Behaviour and Animal Welfare at the University of Edinburgh, with a project focused on the relationship between stereotypies and anticipatory behaviour. She has since then worked in different research projects, completing her PhD at Ghent University, where she studied the benefits of the human-animal bond in challenging circumstances and later worked as postdoctoral researcher to develop innovative, automated solutions to assess and improve the welfare of broiler chickens. Ana joined the CIWF team in February 2023 as Research Manager. In her role, she provides technical support to help food companies adopt and comply with the Better Chicken Commitment, with the ultimate goal of moving towards high standards of broiler chicken welfare.

Dr. Hillary Dalton

Hillary Dalton is the Senior Research Manager at Compassion in World Farming USA. Hillary holds a PhD in poultry behavior and welfare from the University of Guelph, an MSc in applied animal behavior and animal welfare from the University of Edinburgh, and a BSc in animal biology from the University of Alberta. Hillary previously served as a post-doctoral associate at Newcastle University, overseeing precision agriculture research on behavior, welfare and health topics in pigs and poultry. During her career, Hillary has published several peer-reviewed scientific articles and has presented at several international conferences. Hillary uses her technical knowledge and experience to advise Compassion USA on strategies to improve farmed animal welfare and the sustainability of modern food production practices.

Freya Middlehurst

She joined Compassion as she wanted to shift her career focus to sustainable farming practice and is looking forward to applying her knowledge to help businesses work towards positive change.

Hayley Roberts

Hayley joined Compassion in 2008 after completing a BSc in Animal Management and Land Based Business. She joined the Food Business team in 2010 working predominantly with leading, global foodservice companies to help them implement policies to drive improvements in farm animal welfare in their supply chains. Hayley has previously managed our Food Business events programme including industry forums and the annual Good Farm Animal Welfare Awards ceremony. As of 2022, Hayley is a European Food Business Manager managing our corporate engagement activities with key accounts.

Helen Farrell

Helen joined Compassion in October 2022 as Marketing and Communications Manager for the Better Chicken Commitment (BCC). She brings over thirty years of international marketing experience, much of it within the technology industry, to focus on what she is most passionate about - reducing the suffering of farmed animals. Helen will be implementing a digital communications programme to promote the Better Chicken Commitment (BCC). Working with Compassion's Food Business Account Managers, as well as industry partners, she will create content that drives commitments and implementation of the BCC - as well as encouraging consumers to support higher welfare chicken.

Jeff Zhou

Jeff Zhou has represented Compassion in World Farming (CIWF) in China since 2008. Prior to working at Compassion Jeff was Chinese consultant for the RSPCA. In 2013 Jeff was promoted to Head of China and since April 2015 has become Compassion's Ambassador in China. Since starting at Compassion in 2008, Jeff has organised several workshops and conferences on animal welfare, and has worked with a variety of organisations and individuals to promote animal welfare legislation. Jeff regularly gives educational lectures to undergraduates and producers to help raise public awareness about animal welfare, and actively seeks ways to work with governmental departments and research centres to promote welfare-friendly agricultural practices. More recently Jeff successfully developed the connection between the ‘International Cooperation Committee of Animal Welfare', (ICCAW) and Compassion in World Farming in China.

Jenna is a Food Business Manager with the Compassion in World Farming U.S. team. She has an M.S. in Food Science and Human Nutrition from Colorado State University and a BSc in Nutritional Sciences from Cornell University. During her graduate program, Jenna studied the social and environmental impacts of restaurant menus and the sustainability of restaurant Corporate Social Responsibility reports. She is particularly interested in improving the sustainability and equitability of food systems through system level changes. Hailing from Colorado, Jenna loves to run on the local trails, spend time with her rescue dog, and host pizza nights with her friends and family.
