In 1969, a biology teacher at (the now demolished) Highfield Secondary School in Hemel Hempstead by the name of Chris Last enjoyed an evening volleyball class so much he decided to start a club both within the school and in the evenings outside the school. The club was called the Highfield and Hemel Hempstead Volleyball Club. The evening club players were the founders of the Hertfordshire Volleyball Association. The records for the HVA go back as far as the 1977/8 season, when Hemel Hempstead Volleyball Club is recorded as the winners of HVA Men's Division 1. By 1987, the club was well established, playing National League with both men's and women's teams. When the Hemel club folded, the majority of players carried on playing at Berkhamsted Sports Centre and reformed the club under the name of Berkhamsted Volleyball Club circa 1992. The club moved to Kings Langley (to train and play at the Rudolph Steiner School) in about 2011/2 and changed their name to Kings Langley Volleyball Club..
