Because neither was present, R. Messenger asked for, and received, permission to present a Minority Report. (b) Budget #1 (which assumed three issues of _CH_ to be published through the year) received only one vote of support in a straw poll; it was withdrawn. (c) * * MOTION (1011-1) made by G. Dann requested copies of two lists: (i) one of Life Members without e-mail addresses on file with MACA; (ii) one of Members with bad address (counted as 17 on the Membership Report). (b) It was noted that the trend is for adults increasingly not to pay for the hard-copy Chess Horizons. Scholastic: R. Messenger reported: (i) (1) the Gus Gosselin Grade Championship took in net income of $776.00. (2) R. Messenger is concerned that many parents did not receive the e-mail he tried to send them with the online ap. (3) He recommends that the tournament add a 9 th-Grade Section. (ii) (1) An e-mail has been sent out to Members for the Hurvitz Cup. (2) An e-mail has to be sent to the Holiday Inn in Boxboro to confirm the layout. (iii) MACA may wish to add a Fall Team Tournament to the calendar. (iv) It may be advisable to set up a High School League to organize and grow high school teams. (v) * * MOTION (312-1) made by L. Eldridge and seconded by S. Dann to appoint R. Messenger Chief TD of the Hurvitz Cup Tournament. The VOTE was taken; with 5 votes in favor versus 2 abstentions, the MOTION passed. * * Tournament: (a) R. Messenger reported: (i) the hotel needs to be decided upon for the NE Open; there is one hotel in NH that may work out; (ii) R. Messenger will do a postcard mailing of the MA G/60 Championship on 4/15. (b) S. Dann asked for more careful oversight from MACA of the booksellers who must be found and contacted to come to tournaments. Publications: R. Messenger reported that he will aim to publish Chess Horizons by the end of March, but his laptop has still not been fully restored. Tournament: R. Messenger reported: (i) the MA Championship G/60 will be held on 4/15/12 in Marlboro, and the TLA has been submitted; (ii) the MA Open will be held on Memorial Day weekend for three days in Marlboro, and Walt Champion will provide financial support to guarantee a minimum level of prizes; (iii) the bid to NECA for the New England Open is still pending; either Marlboro or Leominster is a likely venue. Publications: (a) Acting Editor R. Messenger will soon be ready to prepare the layout of the next Chess Horizons once he gets his laptop computer (crashed on 1/11/12, returned on 2/11/12) up and running again. (b) The plan is to publish a five-month double issue, November 2011-March 2012. The Members will receive 96 pages of print matter in total per year, even if they do not receive it in four distinct issues. LMCF: S. Frymer reported that a request for sets is pending from L. Eldridge, and that he has received a request from Methuen School Department. LMCF recently purchased 200 boards, sets, and bags for $990, a purchase approved by G. Mirijanian as President (reported earlier). Tournament: (a) R. Messenger reported that the Harry Nelson Pillsbury Memorial will be held on 12/3/11. The MA G/60 Championship will probably be held at the Four Points Sheraton in Leominster in April. G. Mirijanian said that he would talk to the hotel. (b) R. Messenger reported that the MA Open will be held Memorial Day weekend at the Best Western Royal Plaza Hotel in Marlborough. Publications: S. Dann reported that he has identified a candidate for the position of Chess Horizons Editor. It was agreed to refer this to the Publications Committee. Education: (i) S. Dann reported on the Boston Chess Education Expo, which will be held 1/6-1/8/12 at the Hyatt Harborside Hotel at Logan Airport in conjunction with CCA's Continental Amateur Tournament. (ii) * * MOTION (1111-4) made by W. Driscoll and seconded by S. Dann to advertise the Boston Chess Education Expo on the MACA web site. A total of 123 players (excluding the Blitz Tournament) played, with 86 players in the main tournament and 37 Scholastic. (ii) Bill Goichberg of CCA wrote a commentary stating that he believed that MACA's entry fees were too low, and that Scholastic Sections were best discontinued. Membership: R.
