Shankar Gunaratnam

After completing his Bachelor of Laws degree and obtaining the Certificate of Legal Practice, Shankar Gunaratnam read in the chambers of Dato' Anantham Kasinather of Messrs. Skrine & Co. Following his pupillage at Messrs. Skrine & Co., he was then retained as a Legal Assistant there and served as a Legal Assistant from January 1995 until the end of 1999. At Messrs. Skrine & Co., he served as a Legal Assistant in the litigation department handling general litigation matters with an emphasis on liquidation work. Following his stint in Messrs Skrine & Co., Shankar then joined Messrs. Sivananthan and subsequently Messr. Wong-Cheng Kiat-Loh wherein he headed the Ligation department at Wong-Cheng Kiat-Loh. Prior to joining Messrs. Rose Hussin, he was last employed as a senior legal assistant overseeing litigation matters at Messrs. Kamarudin & Partners. He spent his first 8 years of practice in banking litigation and corporate insolvency and regularly advised and acted for financial institutions liquidators and receivers and managers. One of the main areas of emphasis was bankruptcy and insolvency matters where he still maintains an interest in the area of insolvency. In the last 6 years he has expanded his area of practice to include minority oppression actions, shareholder disputes, breach of fiduciary duty claims, recovery actions involving fraudulent directors and officers and joint venture disputes and estate disputes. Shankar has conducted full trials up to the High Court and has handled full appeals up to the Court of Appeal and Federal Court. He also has considerable experience in tribunals and conducted trials at the Industrial Court and represented clients during inquiries including at disciplinary proceedings at the Malaysian Medical Council. He brings added perspective in such matters as he also serves on the Disciplinary Committee of the Advocates & Solicitors Disciplinary Board sitting on complaints against advocates and solicitors.
